    Sociability and the Travelling Letter

Message, Medium, Mobility in Europe and the Colonies in the Long Eighteenth Century (1650-1850)

The long eighteenth century is widely recognisedby scholars as a golden age of letter writing, characterised by the expansion of transnational and transatlantic correspondence networks among the elites. Particularly in Britain, this period witnessed an unprecedented enthusiasm for epistolary exchange, which led to a proliferation of publications—ranging from scholarly productions such as theoretical treatises and letter-writing manuals, to literary works, whether fictional, sentimental, general, or biographical. These developments contributed to a redefinition of epistolary conventions, narrative models, and often gendered representations of letter writing.

Female Voices, Media, and Modes of Communication in Theology and Philosophy

Women have long contributed to the development of theology and philosophy, yet their voices have often been marginalized, mediated through restrictive frameworks, or silenced altogether. This seminar approaches communication not only as a neutral means of expression, but also as a form of power: the choice of medium, style, and platform can grant authority, negotiate legitimacy, or challenge dominant structures.

Italian catholic culture through the periodical press between reconstruction and the “Economic miracle”

"Diacronie. Studi di Storia Contemporanea" Journal (December 2026)

After the World War II in Italy there was a proliferation of periodical publications differing in orientation, field of interest and groups of pression, which in the framework of the new democratic and republican order came to constitute a fundamental vehicle of ideas and cultural models, as well as an instrument employable in the political struggle. This development also affected the Catholic world. This call aims to investigate publishing “products” produced by ecclesiastical or secular entities for a wide or targeted audience, aimed at instructing, educating, outlining models, awakening devotions and other religious practices, as well as directing social and political behavior.

    Forgotten Journalists

Lived experiences and professional identities in the past

Liberas, UGent, the Laboratoire des pratiques et des identités journalistiques (ReSIC-ULB) and CAMille (ULB/KBR) are organizing between 5 and 7 June a three-day international colloquium on the life stories and careers of "forgotten journalists". The history of journalism has often focused on a limited number of famous individuals. Behind these big names are many journalists whose names and work have not made it into the canon. But to capture the full diversity of the journalistic field, these careers and lives need to be recovered.

In this issue of AN-ICON. Studies in Environmental Images, we invite contributions that critically engage with the intersections of immersion, technology, and sexuality through various methodologies. Emerging Technologies in Communication: Best Practices and Theoretical Frameworks for Professional Success

Communication practitioners are now faced with difficult questions regarding which of emerging technologies can substantially improve their workflow and which only add to the technological noise interfering with the essence of their work. Even if productivity considerations have encouraged the adoption of Artificial Inteligence systems in many areas of professional communication, it is still not certain which tasks can be safely delegated to the technological systems, if one takes into account their oscillating levels of accuracy. As concerns for end-product quality increase in many areas, it becomes clear that most of these new options need a substantial amount of supervision and correction on the part of human professionals. The conference call is thus emphasizing the need to examine theories, concepts, ideas for best practices, and attempts to understand the changing parameters for professional success.

    Forgotten Journalists

Lived experiences and professional identities in the past

This conference aims to reconstruct the careers and lived experiences of a mass of anonymous news workers. Three groups of forgotten media professionals stand out (amongst others): war correspondents and foreign correspondents, female journalists, and those who founded and shaped professional journalists’ associations and trade unions behind the scenes. Thanks to the ever-increasing amount of digitised historical news media, the digitisation of genealogical sources and the growing access to the archives of professional journalists, the lives and works of forgotten journalists have become easier to trace. By focusing on lived experiences and professional identities from a historical and decentered perspective, we want to make visible those whose work has been underestimated, or whose journalistic (or partly journalistic) careers have been neglected.

Forgeries, Fakes and Counterfeits in Print Culture: Texts, Editions, Copies

The printed book, for centuries the most powerful medium for the circulation of ideas, is particularly central to this discourse, and it is no surprise that readers of all times as well as specialists are constantly challenged by the wealth of literary forgeries, fake imprints, fake authors, and material counterfeits. We are far, however, from an established definition of these notions, especially in their differences and overlaps. This two-day symposium aims to explore the topic at three different levels. Texts addresses textual forgeries and manipulations of authorship; editions concentrates on false imprints, ‘refreshed’ title-pages, and editorial piracy, including that of written and illustrated paratext; copies looks into the alteration of individual specimens of an edition.

Alternative Mediatization of Politics: Self-Media, Web TV, and Opinion Channels

Book Erased: Print Word Censorship and US National Identity

    RSAJournal no.35

From canonical masterpieces to the latest bestseller, the history of US literature is punctuated with books that have been banned from classrooms, libraries, and bookshops because they are considered harmful or inappropriate by a reactionary minority. By exposing the most profound fears of the US hegemonic powers and the way these have evolved or persisted, unchanged, over time, banned books mirror, and therefore provide insights into, other politically motivated acts of censorship throughout US history. This special issue of “RSAJournal” invites contributions that examine the ongoing nationwide “Ed Scare” in US public education in the context and as part of a wider, conservative political agenda aimed at maintaining the status quo by restricting and policing (among other things) the promotion and exercise of critical thinking, especially among young people.

    Comics as Computation

An uninterrupted thread of operational intensity

This collective volume aims to provide a historical understanding of the intensification of automation in the comics industry, leading to today’s integration of algorithmic tools for the production of comics. It has the goal to examine to which extent comics are the direct output of industrial processes of completion based on instituted sets of standardization practices and how deeply automation is embedded in the conceptualization of artistic practices in the medium. Comics as Computation ambitions to analyze how the integration of computational processes for the production of contemporary comics is consistent with the industry’s early experiments in automation. This volume looks for contributions that suggest historical continuities by following the uninterrupted thread of the same operational intensity with today’s synthetic comics and generalized adoption of computational tools such as Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, chatgpt, Hugging Face, among many others.
