The role of women in decorative arts and design in France (1850 to the present)

This conference aims to discuss and to provide a state of research on the role of women in decorative arts and design in France but also to shed light on an aspect of artistic creation. It aims to give an overview of the evolution and role of women in the decorative arts and design in France since the mid-19th century in order to complete a current knowledge related to an ongoing field of research in the history of art and creative industries. In this purpose, we would also propose to cross-analyze the problematic at an international level, particularly in Europe, in order to better address and deepen the issue.

The culture of the bottle. Uses and visual representations of alcoholic drinks in the 17th and 18th centuries

Exile and contemporary sound creation: recent conflicts and revolutions

    « Filigrane », n°30

This issue will examine the multiplicity of dimensions that exist within the relationship between contemporary artistic sound creation and tragic situations of exile, provoked by a multitude of factors, including geopolitical, social, economic, and religious conflicts, as well as discrimination. The study will examine the migratory paths of exiled musicians to assess the impact of forced displacement on their creative processes and musical practices.

    Anachronisms

    Perspective, no. 2025-2

Long considered a “mortal sin” of historical sciences, anachronism is nevertheless part of current practices in art history, often unconsciously, through the use of categories and notions forged in the 19th century in Europe. At the same time, other practices of anachronism have emerged over the past thirty years, where it is used as a method which allows new questions, new objects, new stories to emerge. Perspective aims to examine these unintentional or asserted practices of anachronism in art history.

Resonance: The Creative Thrust of “Deep Zouk”

Cicero’s Epistulae ad Brutum between politics, rhetoric and philosophy

    Lecturae Ciceronis 2025

What Matters in Contemporary Anglophone Cultures

“What Matters” is an invitation to rethink the weight of habits, established structures and validated categories. Arguing that someone/something counts goes against economic/budgetary/financial accounting, which is typically the work of a dominant power that keeps precise accounts, compiling or capitalising, trying to contain or control. What matters” is an invitation to give an account of what does not seem to count, what is unthought of or invisible. What matters” is a response to what is challenging research, and a direct appeal to its agency to redefine the common space and what would be a (co-)habitable world. It invites us to grasp how research can make people act and react, and provoke awakening. We are looking for papers in linguistic, literary, dramatic, historical, sociological, political, film and serial studies and, more broadly, cultural studies.

Backlash politics and sustainable development in Latin America

Special issue of the “Revue internationale des études du développement”

This special issue of the Revue internationale des études du développement  aims to bring together articles dealing with the politics of backlash in sustainable development in Latin America. The terms “backlash” and “backlash politics” are essential elements of the contemporary political landscape. They can be used in various contexts to refer to conservative mobilization, to movements in favor of local autonomy, to radical right populism, etc. We seek to stimulate in-depth reflection on conservative mobilization and the varied responses it has elicited in Latin America, across different political areas and at different scales. We call for innovative contributions and invite authors to focus on three lines of inquiry centered on ideas, institutions, and interests: 1/ Conservative agendas: reconfigurations and contestations of SD discourses and frameworks; 2/ Institutionalizing the backlash: changes in norms and politics; 3/ The strategies and interests of backlash actors.

Space and scale in missionary agency (1880–1920)

The symposium revolves around the question of the agency of the Christian missionaries and their sending organizations which have been, to varying degrees, major actors of social and cultural mutations among the people and societies they worked with. Through the diverse presentations from scholars of various geographical and academic fields, we hope to get a better understanding of the impact of European and North American Christian missions at the turn of the twentieth century, and spur greater interest on this subject.

Religions, Individuals, and Communities in the Americas

As recurring objects of analysis running the whole gamut of humanities and social sciences, the ties between religions, communities, and the individuals within them have constantly been used to gauge tensions within social structures. All the more so on the American continent, where the destructive spiral of colonization set off waves of migration, and the pluralism within the communities and religions from the Northwest Territories to Tierra del Fuego delineates both their differences and similarities. Is there such a thing as specifically American structures when it comes to religions and communities? That is one of the questions posed by the present 18th issue of RITA.

Secularization of religious assets in Enlightenment Europe: urban development, architecture, and art works

The suppression of the Society of Jesus in 1773 marks the last step of the Order’s progressive dissolution initiated fifteen years earlier, in Europe and in its colonies. This act of suppression was the culmination of a broader secularisation movement concerning religious congregations across Europe, from the 1760s to the French Revolution. Whether driven by reformatory or by economic interests, all acts of suppression and secularisation had the same consequences: a large number of movable assets and real property, estates and art works were either reallocated to other religious congregations or put on sale, when not confiscated altogether. Several studies have already investigated the dispersal of abolished congregations’ assets in different parts of Enlightened Europe, but a broader overview is yet to be drawn.

Lapidariums. Precious sources for the history of a monument and its sculpted decoration

    "In Situ" Journal n°53 – 2025

The French term ‘dépôt lapidaire’, a lapidary depot, rendered here as a lapidarium, is understood to mean collections of archaeological or architectural fragments and pieces of sculpture, assembled so as to maintain an organic link with the monument or the site they come from. The time seems to be ripe, then, as the topic as a whole takes on numerous forms, to draw up a general, if provisional analysis of the situation. It seems useful to think about how best to share information coming from different sectors (historic monuments, archaeology, museums and parks and gardens). New lines of action can perhaps be sketched out for a new phase for these very special cultural properties, located at the frontiers between the movable and immovable heritage.

When the archaeological object is a historical subject

Perception, function and reception of artefacts

In the wake of the material turn and following the example of the television programme Faire l'histoire presented by Patrick Boucheron on Arte, the aim of this event is to reflect on the definition, role and understanding of artefacts. Encompassing a wide historical period and geographical area, our aim is to examine both the history of the archaeological object itself and the archaeological object in history. This interdisciplinary approach will allow us to compare points of view on a subject at the heart of current issues.

    Music and right-wing movements

“Transposition. Music and social sciences” n°13 (2025)

The issue 13 of Transposition aims to provide an overview of the relationships between music and right-wing political movements in the contemporary world. If music is both an aesthetic and a social phenomenon that can contribute to our understanding of the world, is there a specifically musical way of thinking about and defining the political category of the right? With a view to questioning the contribution of music to the evolution of right-wing ways of thinking and acting, and vice versa, proposals may focus as much on actors as on institutions, as well as on the aesthetic scope of artistic productions.

    Circus arts without borders

For a world history of the circus from Antiquity to the present day

The aim of this conference is to decompartmentalise these historiographies by inviting researchers in history and, more broadly, in the arts and the social sciences (performing arts, art history, sociology, anthropology, etc.), as well as those involved in the artistic and cultural world, to combine their approaches. This conference sees itself as a first step towards a world history of the circus, while being aware of the limits of such an undertaking. The historiography of the circus is recent, and many aspects remain unexplored. There is a lack of works that build bridges between different national histories. Moreover, some of them have not yet been written. The history of the circus in certain regions of the world and at certain periods remains largely unknown. Consequently, papers taking a local approach may be proposed if they draw attention to these areas where the history of the circus has yet to be written. However, the emphasis will be on comparative or connected, global or even worldwide approaches. The aim will be to highlight intercultural dynamics rather than local particularities.

The interdisciplinary colloquium on “Nights of the South” will provide an opportunity for researchers from different disciplines, artists, association leaders, practitioners and elected officials from many countries to take stock of this work on and in the Global South. The aim will be to better understand the evolution of urban and rural nightlife and the ways of living and inhabiting nights at different scales according to cultures, countries, territories, cities; to identify evolutions, tensions, inequalities of access, but also strategies for the development or protection of nights carried out by different actors; and to reflect upon the preferred forms of governance of the night.
