  Decolonizing Americas

  Radical Americas Symposium 2016

  The theme of this year’s Radical Americas symposium is “Decolonizing Americas”, acknowledging the long arc of struggle for freedom since the period of European colonization of the Western Hemisphere in the 15t^h century. Our collaborative effort will be to consider how histories within the US, Latin America, and the Caribbean converge and depart in relation to the experience of anti-colonial and decolonizing social movements, many of which continue today. We will also consider the ways that cultural efforts, collectives, art, and intellectual projects shape radical imaginaries of freedom.

  Who is in - who is out? The categories of tourism and migration and the dynamics of socio-political inclusion and exclusion

  The main theme of this meeting will be to place anthropology front and center in the face of emergent contemporary conflicts, dilemmas, and possibilities. And our panel will explore the following questions: How do politically and socially constructed categories such as migration and tourism affect the mobility of people and what strategies are employed by persons to deal with, and challenge, these competing definitions of travel? How does the nation-state interfere with peoples’ habits of travel? What are the experiences of persons with travel categories and how is the interplay with other categories such as nationality, gender, ethnicity, age, or sexuality?

  Medieval Textuality and its material display

  The International Medieval Society organizes its 13^th Annual Symposium in Paris, on the theme of Words in the Middle Ages. Between the increasing use of paperless media forms and the rise in the number of digital collections, medievalists are seeking to adapt to these new means of producing knowledge about the Middle Ages. At the same time, scholars in this field are also trying to outline the methodological and historical issues that affect the study of words, which now simultaneously exist in the form of primary sources, codices, rolls, charters and inscriptions, digitally reproduced images, and the statistical and lexicographical data made possible by storage platforms and analytical tools.

  Abraham Ibn Ezra, a Twelfth-Century Polymath who Straddled Arabic, Hebrew and Latin Culture

  In the middle of the eighth century, with the completion of the Islamic conquest of the eastern, northern and part of the western shores of the Mediterranean, Jews managed to successfully integrate into the ruling society without losing their religious and national identity. They willingly adopted the Arabic language, spoke Arabic fluently, wrote Arabic in Hebrew letters (Judeo-Arabic), and employed Arabic in the composition of their literary works. The twelfth century witnessed a cultural phenomenon that saw Jewish scholars gradually abandon the Arabic language and adopt Hebrew, previously used almost exclusively for religious and liturgical purposes, for the first time as a vehicle for the expression of secular and scientific ideas.

At least since the end of the last century, the production, circulation, management, and reproduction of feeling practices have become some of the basic features of education, health care, knowledge production, the mass media, the entertainment industry, sexuality, politics, and the market - just to mention some of the most publicly “visible” ones. It is in this context that  we have considered it desirable to bring together researchers and academics dealing with various aspects relating to the topic of sensibilities.

  French Citizenship and Colonization in the 20th century (until 1946)

  Les dimensions impériales de la citoyenneté française sont à la fois bien et mal connues. Des travaux récents ont rappelé que la césure entre citoyens et sujets s’est construite de façon progressive et par ajustements entre les enjeux de pouvoir à l’échelle locale et impériale, les logiques juridiques et les revendications portées par des acteurs mus par des intérêts différents, sinon contradictoires. La multiplication des recherches d’histoire sociale, politique et culturelle de la colonisation permet désormais d’écrire une histoire plurivoque des dimensions impériales de la citoyenneté française en se demandant comment tous ces acteurs formulent la question qui sert de titre au colloque « quels citoyens pour l’empire ? » et quelles réponses ils lui apportent, ou comment ils font en sorte d’empêcher qu’elle soit débattue.

The workshop will take place at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland), 29-30 September 2016. Much has been written on wages within economics. In his classical account of the history ofwage theory, Dunlop (1957) refers to three time-periods: the wage-fund theory domination,the rise of marginal productivity distribution theory, and the “contemporary setting”, startingin the 1930s and characterized by a diversity of theoretical arguments; but much has changed.

  Myth and Emotions

  Along with rational logic there is an emotional logic, responsible for many actions that we carry out. Myth Criticism tends to tackle mythical stories from a structural, social and historical perspective. However, it often ignores the emotional component. It seems as if the affective dimension, particularly active in our contemporary society, is not considered relevant in the studies of mythology. The Conference will examine the function undertaken by emotions in the structure of mythical stories and in the processes of mythification of characters and historical events. The object of the study will focus on ancient, medieval and modern myths in contemporary literature and art (since 1900).

  Geoarchaeology, defined as the application of geosciences and geographical methods to prehistory, archaeology, and history, is now widely applied to study key subjects such as occupation patterns, territory and site exploitation, palaeoclimatic, palaeoenvironemental, and palaeogeographical changes, as well as anthropogenic impacts and system responses. The multidisciplinary and multiscalar dimensions of geoarchaeological approaches have encouraged continuous development and innovation of methods and approaches that have opened new possibilities for explorations in geographical sectors previously inaccessible, the development of large-scale data acquisitions and treatment, and also the development of microscopic scale analysis precision. This session will highlight global research in geoarchaeology with particular emphasis on innovative methods or cutting edge research using established approaches.

  Staging American Bodies

  For this seventh International Symposium on Staging America, we invite scholars to explore the various ways in which American bodies have been staged and represented throughout history and through various media. From P.T. Barnum’s freak shows to modern-day tattoo conventions, from Carson McCullers’ and Flannery O’Connor’s grotesque characters to twenty-first century sideshows, bodies have always been a source of both attraction and repulsion. The fascination triggered by deformities – whether natural or self-inflicted – reveals as much about Americans’ conceptions of normality, hence of identity, as it does about the nature of the body itself.

  Accidents and the role of the State in the 20th century

  In the workshop on "Accidents and the role of the state" we want to discuss, from a historical perspective, the changing relationship between accidents and the modern state during the 20^th century. Strasbourg)-FRIAS (Freiburg) joint research project on military accidents in France and Germany in the twentieth century. We are therefore especially interested in proposals that deal with the role of the military. However, relevant topics for the workshop could, of course, also come from the realm of the histories of technology, of environment, of medicine, or of the rise of the modern state. We are interested both in presentations of case studies as well as in more conceptual approaches on the topic. Contributions that deal with accidents in German and French history are highly welcome. However, the call is by no means limited to historians of France or Germany.

  New resources, new uses, new challenges

  The open data movement, which emerged in the USA and the UK in 2009, refers to an organization’s making some of its data (transport, weather, health, public markets, etc.) accessible for reuse by businesses or the public. Beyond the initial challenges related to the transparency of public action, open data are an important source of information. In France, for example, the state makes its data available, start-ups are building innovative services based on open data and historical actors have opened their data to their ecosystem.
