    “Contemporary spiritualities” and “New Age”

Ethnographic and historical-comparative approaches to a transnational field

While the first theorists of secularization foresaw the gradual disappearance of religion from the public sphere, others observed a reorganization or even a “return of the sacred” on a worldwide scale. Aside from fundamentalisms which strongly uphold the idea of “tradition” and strengthen borders, new forms of religious expression have appeared transnationally, most often deinstitutionalized and integrated in civil society: for example, the “new religious movements”, and especially the more diffused and nebulous networks, groups and movements known under the generic terms of “New Age” and “contemporary spiritualities”.This session seeks to explore these new forms of transnational religiosity expressed through the notions of “spiritualities” and “New Age” from the perspectives of ethnography and the comparative social history of religion.

Seeing Through? The Materiality of Dioramas (1560-2010)

Dioramas are at the crossroads of artistic, scientific and cultural practices. They bring together painters, sculptors, scientists, and collectors, thus providing an opportunity to reflect on the polyvalence of these actors and the definition of their expertise. To date, these installations have been studied by scholars from various disciplines, mainly as side topics. Media historians have considered them primarily as proto-cinematic, whereas within the fields of anthropology, museum studies and postcolonial studies, they are generally analyzed as displays that reflect political taxonomies and stereotyped representations.

Scholarship in Software, Software as Scholarship

    From Genesis to Peer Review

Computation and software analysis have entered nearly every imaginable field of scholarship in the last decades, in a variety of forms from digital publication of results to computational modelling embedded in experimental work. In each of these digital outputs - be it an interactive publication with mapping of relevant geo-referenced data, or perhaps a statistical program for the categorization of millions of books according to their literary genre - there is some manifestation directly in the computer code of the scholarly thought that underlies the project, of the intellectual argument around which the outcome is based.

The office as an interior (1880-1960)

It is organised by the Swiss Rural History Society (SRHS) and the Archives of Rural History (ARH) in Bern and takes place at the University of Bern from 19-22 August 2013. The main aim of the conference is to provide an overview of the state of the art of rural history today. Another goal is to strengthen the existing networks and co-operation of rural historians and their institutions. The conference will be an excellent occasion for historians to discuss the basic question of what exactly rural history is, how it can be narrated and, crucial for the future development of rural history, how the attractions of rural history in an era of worldwide urbanization can be communicated to the younger generation.
