American Art in Dialogue with Africa and the African Diaspora
Since the beginning of the transatlantic slave trade, Africa has played an important — albeit shifting, contested, and often unseen — role in the history of art of the United States. Conference organizers seek original, innovative scholarship investigating heretofore unexamined aspects of this transatlantic dialogue, from the visual culture of slavery and abolitionism to American modernism; from the Black Arts Movement to the contemporary art world. -

Fernando Pessoa as English reader and writer
Fernando Pessoa's British education left long-lasting traces in his writings, particularly (but not exclusively) in his English texts. The aim of this issue is to study the pivotal role that the English language and literary tradition played in Pessoa's production throughout his life. In order to achieve this, we propose a volume traversing a wide range of topics bridging the author's Archive and Private Library. Portuguese Literary & Cultural Studies is a multilingual interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journal that addresses the literatures and cultures of the diverse communities of the Portuguese-speaking world in terms of critical and theoretical approaches. -

Beyond French New Languages for African Diasporic Literature
In recent years, Africans from former French colonies in both the Maghreb and Sub-Saharan regions have been settling in countries other than France and writing in languages other than French. This break with the colonial and postcolonial habits of la Françafrique – the familiar bind of metropole and colony – has been going on for years and is now ripe for analysis. Writing in German, Italian, Dutch, Catalan, Spanish, English, and other languages, these authors suggest new patterns of diasporic belonging and raise new questions about the postcolonial world. Issues of immigration, language choice, cosmopolitanism, global citizenship, and world literature will be addressed. -

During 1960s, Quebec opens to the world. Both at the political, economic, social and cultural levels, Quebec tries to create, and in some cases, to recreate links with the outside world in a way to accelerate its process of modernization. The group of research GRIQUERE (2005) wishes to review the subject by organizing a colloquium aiming, on one hand, to report recent progress in the knowledge at this level and on the other hand, to identify the fields which were neglected up to here to direct the future researches. -

IIEMCA 2013: Technologies and Techniques
11th international IIEMCA conference on ethnomethodology and conversation analysis
Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis are primarily concerned with the techniques actors utilize to accomplish the social, be it through workplace studies, studies of scientific knowledge, studies of interactional order, etc. The fundamental question that confronts Ethnomethodologists and Conversation Analysts - “how does this interaction get done?” – has and will thus receive a variety of related answers. We invite papers from the international community of EM/CA scholars that address the issues, practices and phenomena related to Technologies and Techniques. As is EM/CAs tradition, we cast these categories in the broadest possible conception, but are particularly interested in papers which address the themes of Technology in the Home, Workplace, or related settings; Technology’s Impact on Theory/Method; Technological Approaches to Data Analysis; Everyday Technology; and The Artful Techniques of Social Interaction. -

Appel à contribution - Études urbaines
The second International Congress on Ambiances is an international gathering for researchers, artists and players engaged in analyzing the ambiance-related dimensions of the built environment and in the sensory construction of the contemporary world. Many approaches are at work in the field of architectural and urban ambiance, and these multiple contributions nurture its rich diversity. The Congress aims to give voice to this activity, feeding on work exploring new forms of exchange between what is designed and what is experienced, between the measured and the qualified, the projected and the tested, the material and the immaterial. The Congress will be held for four days at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), in Montreal, from 19 to 22 September 2012. It will seek to express advances in learning and new hypotheses proposed by the various disciplines and fields of activity which address the question of ambiances. -

Netherlandish culture of the sixteenth century
Interdisciplinary conference
Whereas much attention has been paid to the Burgundian Low Countries of the fifteenth century and the so-called Golden Age of the seventeenth, the culture of the Netherlands in the century in between has long been neglected. Yet the past two decades have witnessed significant research on Netherlandish art, literature, and society of the sixteenth century. The period was famously marked by the twin flashpoints of iconoclasm and revolt, but it witnessed throughout a significant development in artistic, political, and literary culture. This interdisciplinary conference invites papers on topics related to the Netherlandish Culture of the Sixteenth Century.
