    Niccolò Machiavelli: Politics, Philosophy, Law

Machiavelli is one of the most influential thinkers of the Western political tradition. Every single political philosopher who comes after him refers to him, either implicitly or explicitly. Every serious politician is, sooner or later, confronted with some of the practical problems Machiavelli addresses. Five hundred years after his death, Machiavelli is ubiquitous but enigmatic: often quoted, but rarely understood, his ideas frequently reduced to a few maxims from The Prince.

    Complaining about Medicine

In recent years, studies into experiences of health care have led historians to engage with the issue of the medical complaint. As expressions of dissatisfaction, disquiet and failings in service provision, the complaint is both a vital antidote to progressive histories of health care and, in generating contemporary investigation and debate, has also left a fertile seam for historical research. Often it is only when things go wrong that we begin to understand thecomplexity at work in past events. This two-day international conference will explore what has happened historically when medicine generated complaints.

“Ri yo avan yo riw”: Rebellion and Compliance of Womanhood in African-Diasporic Milieu

As defined by Hirsh, postmemory: “describes the relationship of the second generation of powerful, often traumatic experiences that preceded their births but that were nevertheless transmitted to them so deeply as to seems to constitute memories in their own rights” (2008). Applied to the African Diaspora, one may suggest that slavery and colonialism constitute a postmemory directly determining the approach to self of all members of the African Diaspora. This postmemory is so ingrained in these societies that the post-conflict backlash generally affecting women from former colonised or occupied countries, has hit African-Diasporic women in an extremely unusual way. In fact, it has been witnessed in several middle Eastern or South American societies that after liberationist conflicts, some societies would create a fantasised notion of womanhood allegedly pre-colonial, rejecting the former dominant culture to glorify their own root culture (Al Ali, Pratt 2007; Pankhurst 2007). In African-Diasporic milieu and in the same post conflict context, women were fed with dreams of European respectability of which the European middle class woman was archetypal. This rather complex situation generated great uneasiness as far as identity and womanhood were concerned. Beyond the debate around Négritude, Créolité and even Modernity, black women are yet to fit the general notion of “whut a [black] woman oughta be and to do”.Indeed, One can wonder at the ability of the new generation to fulfil the dream of respectability of its mothers (Burton, 1997) while complying with the demands of an increasingly neo-liberal environment. Coupled with the Festival Image of Black Women, this conference will be the opportunity to discuss the discrepancy between the image, the representation and the realities of African-Diasporic women. The aim is to identify the postmemories responsible for the social expectations of womanhood in a given community and how these expectations protect or injure the same women.

Interrogation in War and Conflict: between Liberty, Security and Justice

After recent revelations of a « UK Abu Ghraib », with allegations of systematic mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners of war at a British military interrogation centre, and the opening of a formal inquiry, the role of military interrogations has once again been under scrutiny. This seems a particularly opportune time to discuss « interrogation » both as a military event and as a cultural phenomenon. Interrogation raises moral questions, especially for states that see themselves as « liberal », but it can also be approached from many other angles. It is often, for example, a « first contact » between actors who come from different cultures and speak different languages. It sets out to elicit information, but the absorption of that information depends on the conceptual scheme of the interrogator. There are important differences between interrogations done by ordinary soldiers, debriefings by professional intelligence operatives, and interviews that generate forensic evidence.

The Appropriations of Public Policies by Citizens

Sixth International Conference in Interpretive Policy Analysis
