Lecturership in Modern (Global) History

We are looking for a historian who researches aspects of the 19th and 20th centuries and who has a focus on the increasingly interconnected nature of the modern world, whether fostered by imperialism, globalisation or transnationalism. These fields are interpreted broadly and include political, social, cultural and economic history. We are especially, though not exclusively, interested in candidates with interests beyond our current strengths in Africa and Europe. The appointment is for three years in the first instance. -

Call for papers - Ethnology, anthropology
This conference will explore the relationship between music and migration by providing new insights into the creative practices and life-stories of migrant artists across the globe. A core theme of the conference will be the motivations and experiences of migrant musicians who leave, return, stay or move beyond their localities. Through the focus on such specific groups of migrants the conference aims to throw light on their identifications in their artistic and every-day lives. Past and on-going research shows that patterns of migration are clearly linked to transnational networks. By focusing on the role of migrant musicians within such networks, this conference seeks to analyse and understand the extent to which musicians’ networks may or may not be special cases within migration studies. -

Public Disorder: Post-World War II European Art and Its Publics
AAH 2009 : Intersections (April 2-4, 2009)
Following the end of WWII, artists across Europe, both east and west, sought to re-imagine the identity of the public. The internationalist utopia of the historical avant-garde had not come to pass, the populism of the national socialist model had been discredited by Fascism and Nazism, and it was yet unclear what shape the burgeoning commercial public would take in either soviet block or western nations. -

18th April 1948: Italy between Continuity and Rupture
Through a multidisciplinary approach that brings together history, politics, literature, legal studies and international relations, this conference re-examines the significance of 18 April 1948. It assesses in what ways the legacies of WWII, of the fascist regime and of Liberal Italy have influenced the foundation of the new Italian Republic and to what degree 1948 can be seen as a 'watershed in the history of Italy'. -

Begetters of Revolution? Shelburne and the Bowood Circle Reappraised
A Symposium in memory of Derek Jarrett at Sherborne School
