Cultural policies. What's new?
ICCA International Symposium
The question of cultural policies and of their convergence towards a single model - or on the contrary of their divergences - arises in a context of globalization. Indeed, many factors encourage convergence: the industrialization of a wide part of cultural activities; the polarization between structures that are both agile and open to digital technologies and more traditional structures; the global market power of GAFAM on three complementary fields : access to culture via search engines, distribution of cultural goods via e-commerce, digitization of cultural goods and services; the importance given to copyright enforcement; the role of the international art market and positioning of museums facing the evolution of this market (especially competition and rise in prices); public / private rebalancing, even in countries where public intervention is predominant.

Conference, symposium - Economy
This symposium is part of a recent and very dynamic renewal of research on the State in economics involving a critical examination of two dominant postulates of the discipline: 1) the assumption of an apolitical State or a benevolent dictatorship which pursues no private interest maximizing the general interest. 2) The assumption of “soft trade”, i.e. the exclusion of social conflicts, inter-state and intra-state wars in the presence of markets. Our discussions aim to explore how the sovereign, prudential, and providential dimensions of the state can be interpreted if these two assumptions are dropped. What is the place of conflictual power in the genesis and evolution of the rules governing the distribution of wealth and economic, social, and ecological development?

Beyond the “White Man’s Burden”?
Representations of the “Far East” in the English-Speaking World since World War II
This one-day workshop seeks to examine the shifting image of the “Far East” in the English-speaking world, including - but not limited to - news, film, museums, exhibitions, travel literature and television. In part, it seeks to complement the study of media representations with a tentative assessment of their reception, and by examining the overlapping areas between media representations and historical events. The period since the Second World War has seen profound changes in the “Far East”, notably because of decolonization, the creation of independent nation-states and the increasing power of China, Japan and India. This workshop will examine the persistence (or not) of the “white man’s burden” in a post-imperial age.

Toys and material culture : Hybridisation, design and consumption
The predominant theme for the 8th ITRA conference is “Toys and material culture: Hybridisation, design and consumption”. Beyond toys, the conference will explore the place of tangible objects and novel forms of material culture in play. What are the similarities and the differences, the relationships, between toys and other material devices, such as board games, cards, digital games and media-connected objects? Are there, in play, or in the trans-mediated toys themselves, new forms of materiality?

Reinventing the Sea: precarity, epistemology, narratives
The oceans cover 71 percent of the Earth's surface and contain 97 percent of the Earth's water. One way to reinvent the ocean, as Philip E. Steinberg points out, is not to consider it as a space outside the human beings who settle inside, i.e., on the land, but to look upon it as a mobile and dynamic space that is central to the flows of modern society.

Significant Figures in the Formation of Transcultural Psychiatry
This workshop endeavours to comparatively evaluate the ideas and practices of some of the major contributors to the formation of the international discipline of transcultural psychiatry in the mid-twentieth century, a time that saw the transition from the colonial to post-colonial periods in many parts of the world, which had a direct effect on how mental illnesses were conceived of by psychiatrists sensitive to cultural differences.

For the past fifty years, homophonic translation (traduction homophonique, sound translation, Oberflächenübersetzung) has been practiced internationally by an ever-increasing number of writers from the USA, the UK, Germany, France and beyond. Following pioneers such as Louis Zukofsky, Ernst Jandl and members of the Oulipo group, this heterodox genre (between translation and creation) has spread widely, to the point where it is among the exercises practiced in creative writing classes. Although some consider it as an unacceptable, illegitimate, and unethical practice, it is nonetheless true that such an approach to translation has acquired a crucial place within experimental writing, and notably in the poetic field.

1660-1688: A Landmark Period in the History of British Sociability

The Cold War and Entertainment Television
An essential dimension of the Cold War took place in the realm of ideas and culture. A great deal of work, for example, has been done on cinema, especially with regard to the United States although other nations, both East and West, have received increasing attention. But with certain noteworthy exceptions (primarily in the areas of science fiction and espionage series) relatively little has been done on this subject in relation to television. Yet, television was a technology and popular cultural form that emerged during the Cold War. This project hopes to rectify that absence by providing a forum for examining the impact of the Cold War on entertainment television. We intend to underline the comparative aspect by studying programs from both blocs – without forgetting, of course, the outsize impact of American television.

Conference, symposium - History
Revisiting the “Great Labour Unrest”, 1911-1914
