The Phanariot Past and its Afterlives: Historicizing “Corruption” in Central-South-East Europe (1750s-1920s)

The Phanariots have long animated the historiography of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Southeast Europe. Contemporary political commentators, as well as historians seeking to construct national(ist) narratives, branded the Phanariots with critiques of corruption, foreign interests, and the legacies of the Ottoman past. Yet, scholars have conducted scant research on how and why “Phanariots” and “Phanariotism” came to signify corruption, bad governance, and a seemingly inescapable Ottoman past after 1821. This workshop tends to this gap in historiography.

“Scientiae”: Disciplines of Knowing in the Early Modern World

Building on Scientiae’s interdisciplinary legacy, and its study of the production and circulation of knowledge, we will underscore the interconnectedness of regions, periods, cultures, and material and intellectual traditions in the period between 1400 and 1800. Although centred around the emergence of modern natural science, Scientiae is intended for scholars working in any area of early-modern intellectual culture. The Scientiae network encompasses the long Renaissance period and seeks to integrate historiographical reflection into an approach that, since its creation, has been firmly rooted in epistemology and the history of science, as well as intellectual history, and the practice of knowledge in dialogue.

Arts and Crafts in the Late Ottoman Empire

Rethinking Practices and Concepts of Material Culture in Syria and Beyond (18th - early 20th c.)

The conference Arts and Crafts in the Late Ottoman Empire aims to advance art historical and interdisciplinary research on practices and concepts of material culture in Ottoman lands between the 18th and the early 20th centuries. While inviting contributions on all geographies of the Empire, our call for papers foregrounds late Ottoman Syria as a case through which to expand the analytical and historical horizons of Islamic art and architecture studies and to contribute to broader debates in Ottoman and Arab historiographies of modernity. We encourage authors to consider the analytical frameworks—temporalities, epistemes, and materialities—that underpin the conference’s critical inquiry into the entangled modernities of Ottoman arts and crafts.

Humanism and Nature: Paradoxical and Heterodox Paths

From the 21st Century to the Renaissance

We firstly aim to examine the criticisms levelled at the idea of humanism in recent decades, in particular from the ‘environmentalism’ viewpoint, without neglecting the possible dialogue between humanism and environmentalist perspectives. We propose, in particular, to investigate tensions and paradoxes within humanistic projects, which emerge when their rhetorical and conceptual tools are used to realise a decentralisation of perspective, dethroning the human subject from its self-proclaimed and presumed centrality in the cosmos, in order to look at man/woman from the point of view of the animal or even to rethink her/him in a plural space of living beings and non-living entities.

Violence and Empire. From the Early 1800s to the End of the Great War

From the early 1800s, the formation, consolidation, and maintenance of empires were increasingly bound to new logics of state power, technological advancements, and legal rationalisation and justification. Despite narratives of civilising missions and administrative modernisation, violence remained a central practice of imperial rule, both as an instrument of conquest and a mechanism for governing already established colonial regimes. This conference invites historians and scholars of related disciplines to consider the various ways in which violence operated within imperial systems, how it was implemented, codified and justified legally and culturally, along with its contemporary perception in the imperial metropolis and its remembrance and subsequent legacies that continuously remain influential until the present day.

Women and Europe – Interdisciplinary approaches, innovative prospects, new sources

The conference “Women and Europe – Interdisciplinary approaches, innovative prospects, new sources” seeks to explore these multifarious challenges. While the role of women in Europe, considered from multiple perspectives, has begun to be studied more systematically by researchers, leading to a growing volume of scholarly literature since the mid-1970s, the subject nevertheless remains largely underexplored.

Archaeology Gone Astray: Forgeries, Misinterpretation, and Other Field Stories

An UISPP 'History of archaeology' commission conference

The conference “Archaeology Gone Astray: Forgeries, Misinterpretations, and Other Field Stories” is dedicated to the less glorious—but undeniably fascinating—chapters in the history of archaeology. We’ll delve into everything from notorious forgeries and spectacular blunders to interpretive dead ends and moments of… let’s say, excessive enthusiasm in the field. The event offers a space for reflection, self-reflection, and a bit of humor—because, like any living science, archaeology sometimes takes a wrong turn. Yet, even when it goes astray, it always leads to something interesting. While the main theme centers on the field’s twists, turns, and detours, the program will also feature an open session for participants who wish to present their current research projects.

The Culture of Suspicion: Creating Suspects in the Age of Revolutions

The workshop will examine the impact of suspicion in the age of the Atlantic Revolutions (from around 1770 to 1830) in Europe and its colonial territories. We invite contributions that focus on the question of how individuals or groups of people became suspects of hostility towards the existing monarchical or revolutionary order, and thus potentially subversive. Contributions may deal with the narrative construction of suspicion as well as the practical surveillance measures and juridical proceedings that were used against the suspects.

In spite of the developments in Suetonian studies since W. Steidle’s "rehabilitation" of Suetonius in 1951, the last international conference on this author was held in 2008 (‟Suetonius the biographer” in Manchester). Yet new perspectives on his works have been explored in the meantime, about his political thought, the literary dimension of his biographies, his relation to other authors...

    Scotism in the Reformation Era

    Historical and Historiographical Questions

Recent decades have seen great progress in our understanding of the tradition of Scotism. Thanks to the work of historians of late medieval and early modern philosophy and theology, the importance, but also the doctrinal complexity, of Scotus’ legacy have been brought to light. Historians of the Reformation, however, have remained cautious regarding the broad impact of this intellectual legacy.  In order to do justice to the diversity of early modern Scotism, it is therefore time to have a fresh look at Scotus’ legacy in the Reformation era and to bring together historians of philosophy, of late medieval theology, and of the Reformed traditions to discuss the import of Scotism in the 16th and 17th centuries. This is the aim of our conference.

Who Cares ? Psychiatry in the English-speaking world

« Who cares ?
