Puericulture, Biotypology and "Latin" Eugenics in Comparative Context

This One-day Workshop is organised by the History of Race and Eugenics (HRE) Research Group Oxford Brookes University. The study of eugenics and race is currently undergoing a remarkable transformation - one defined by society's need to engage with scientific advances and the ethical dilemmas they raise on the one hand, and the investigation of hitherto neglected case studies on the other. The inclusion and juxtaposition of national and international histories of race and eugenics lies at the heart of this international collaboration that strives to not only yield original and timely research on these neglected national case studies, but to redefine and diversify the overarching debates on these particularly turbulent periods of modern history.

    Complexity, Networks and Internet Regulation

Seminar of the ANR project on distributed architectures

Why is the Internet so difficult to regulate? In large part, its complexity and size have proved challenging, but there seems to be a lot of ignorance about how it really works. Large interconnected systems such as the Internet display a number of inherent architectural characteristics deeming them well-suited to the study of complex dynamic networks. The starting point of this talk is that it is perfectly possible to use various network science-based tools to explore the contentious issue of Internet regulation. Specifically, the Internet as a dynamic distributed system requires new challenges that rely on that same distributed nature in order to tackle them.

Archival Scribes in the Medieval West

    Training, Careers, Connections

Southern Horrors. The Dark Side of the Mediterranean

Alternative perspectives on the Mediterranean world in North Europe and America

« The Mediterranean is the human norm. When men leave that exquisite lake […] they approach the monstrous and the extraordinary ».

Metropolitan energy policies: the case of the Turkish cities

Call for paper for a Seminar at the French Institute of Anatolian Studies (IFEA), co-organized by Eric Verdeil (Jean Moulin University in Lyon - UMR Environment City Corporation) and Jean-François Pérouse (Galatasaray University and IFEA). The report Energy and Urban Innovation (2010) by the World Energy Council underlines the fundamental role of cities in the energy transition and the interlocking of several series of actions, related to technology, economy and policy. It appears that the political and social practices are a major issue and justify an increased contribution of social sciences to the analysis of the implementation of these new policies. The seminar intends to address these issues in the case of large Turkish cities.

    Governing mobilities

    Cosmobilities conference 2012

The Lausanne Cosmobilities Conference focuses on the question of which systems of governance are involved in these processes and how they are evolving as a result of these trends at a time when the future looks less and less like the past. In contrast to mainstream scientific literature and studies on transport and mobility dominated by works on travel and commuting, in this conference we propose to examine the governance of individual and collective actors’ mobility projects. In modern societies, where discourses lauding spatial and social mobility seem prevalent, this conference aims to understand critically how public policies consider the coexistence of different types of mobility projects, and inequalities linked to this diversity.

    Nuclear questions

How can social sciences help us understand the nuclear world ?
