Post-soviet diaspora(s) in Western Europe (1991-2017)

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, millions of former soviet citizens crossed the national borders in search of better lives in new countries, in what was the biggest migration tide since the end of World War II. These Post-Soviet migrants were diverse in origins, strategies and expectations. They often represented a challenge to the orthodox views of migration processes, since in most cases these flows could not be easily described and analysed following commonly accepted theoretical frameworks. Everybody seemed to be on the move: labour migrants, political refugees, cross-border traders, “tourists” planning to forget their return... and in a short period, they spread all over Western Europe.

Corporate authority in the shaping of public policy

The power of corporate business has been a subject of intense debate and many social science studies since the 19^th century. This conference is based on the idea that, not only has this power varied among industries, countries and different periods, but also that the way in which it is wielded has evolved over time. By bringing together scholars from various backgrounds within the fields of history, sociology, and political science, we intend to provide new insights on the multiplicity, depth and limits of the forms of influence that corporations, or the organizations furthering their interests – business associations, think tanks, communication or public relations agencies, foundations, etc. –, have on public policy.

Created in 1975 upon the initiative of Fernand Braudel, in collaboration with the French Secretary of State for Universities, Department for Higher Education and Research, the DEA Programme (Directeurs d’Études Associés, or Associate Research Directors) is the oldest international mobility programme at Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme. It provides funding to invite, from four to six weeks, international professors and senior researchers with a PhD, or equivalent, working in institutions of higher education and research, from all across the globe to come in France and enables them to carry out work in France (field enquiries, library work and archives).

This conference aims to revisit the notion of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities and other regional areas from a comparative perspective. The interdisciplinary workshop RECSNA17 (Paris, 5-6 December 2017) brings together academics from several fields of knowledge to further advance the ethical reflection in the face of new research challenges. Research on social networks raises formidable ethical issues that often fall outside existing regulations. New tools to collect, treat, store personal data expose both research participants and practitioners to specific risks. Issues surrounding political instrumentalization or economic takeover of scientific results transcend standard research concerns. Legal and social ramifications of studies on personal ties and human networks surface at an unprecedented pace.

In contemporary popular culture, black womanhood frequently takes centre stage. It occupies an increasingly central place and articulates new and renewed dimensions, prompting questions about the status of black women in the cultural imaginary of the United States and beyond. Most prominently, Michelle Obama's First Ladyship has sparked scholarly and media discussions around the significance of stereotypes associated with black women, the possibilities and limitations of public figures to create new images and anchor them in the cultural imaginary, and about the subject positions and images that express and shape constructions of black womanhood (cf. Harris-Perry 2011, Schäfer 2015, Spillers 2009).

Family reunification, mixed marriages and other forms of international family migration are highly politicized topics depicted as threats for national identity. In some countries, the conditions to access the family rights have been reformed complicating the processes of applications for visa, residence permit and nationality. In other countries, migrant and binational families encounter administrative and religious constraints to formalise their unions, to pass on nationality and rights to the children or simply to be socially accepted. This session explores the language employed to define family migration ‒ and the social-administrative processes that go with ‒ by politicians, media, bureaucrats, civil society actors and by family members too. The session welcomes papers from a broad empirical perspectives that explore the changing (or the persistence) of normative languages related to family migration over time.

Under the prism of these dominant-dominated relations, it seemed judicious and timely to analyze the nature of the multiform relationships between Cameroon and its former tutelary powers, as well as the dynamics recorded in bilateral relations in a context of globalization. The purpose of these analyzes is to understand better the processes that have structured these captive relationships and to explore its patterns of deconstruction of dependence.

The development of green, ecological city or Eco-city has been introduced as a mean to support sustainable urban development within a social, economic, environmental and demographic con-text (Tsolakis, Anthopoulos, 2015). The Eco-city concept was introduced by Urban Ecology, a non profit organization that was founded in 1975 by Richard Register (Roseland, 1997). An Eco-city ensures the well-being of its citizens via a holistic urban planning and management approach with the aim of eliminating waste and emissions (Register, 1987). From a systemic point of view, an eco-city can be described like a set of different complex sub-system that need to be associated or reconnected in order to deli-ver the desired outcomes (Diemer, Morales, 2016).

Development policies, space and violence in Latin America: an interdisciplinary discussion

The main objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers working from different disciplines (anthropology, sociology, political science, geography) on the spatial impact of development policies applied under authoritarian regimes in Latin America. Although the “spatial turn” is already well-established in the Social and Human Sciences, the appropriation and adaptation of this theoretical frame remains scarcely explored to reflect on State(s) violence(s). Moreover, the analysis of the spatial impact of development policies carried out in a "forced" manner in the period of dictatorships in Latin America remains also barely analysed.

Male bonds in nineteenth-century art

Male Bonds is a two-day international conference that aims to explore the place of male bonds in nineteenth-century artistic practice and visual arts. The conference invites participants to reflect on the ways in which changing notions of masculinity and male sexuality impacted forms of sociability between men in the artistic scene of the long nineteenth century. In so doing, it seeks to build a bridge between traditional art-historical scholarship and the fields of gender and gay and lesbian studies.

Against Conventions. Uncommon social roles of women and men from Early Modern Times to 1945

The organizers propose to use tools which the category of gender gives in humanistic and social studies. However, we would like to overcome present tendencies to separate studies related to women or men. We hope that during the meeting it will be possible to capture mechanisms occurred while undertaking tasks which were contrary to social norms from both “feminine”, and “masculine” perspectives. We are aware that definitely more women struggled with social boundaries. Nevertheless, we consider the reflection on men’s experience, who also faced such challenges, as equally important.

Representations of Change

Time, Space, and Power in Qualitative Research on the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Region and Europe

Since the start of the 21^stcentury seemingly unpredictable change, in all its different guises, has fueled the preoccupations of academic and non-academic publics. The financial crisis, the “Arab Spring”, protest movements in southern Europe, the rise of Daesh and right-wing populism, as well as the environmental crisis all make it very difficult to rely on Francis Fukuyama’s theory of “end of history”, which now seems to merely reflect the euphoria of liberal elites following the collapse of the Soviet Union (1992). This workshop intends to reflect more closely on the webs of power affecting both the researcher and‚ the researched when they intend to represent change.
