Moving Cities: Contested Views on Urban Life

Contemporary cities are spaces and places traversed by a diversity of movements, making them very special locus for analysing society. In times of digital information, conferences are very important spaces to debate current issues, showcase emerging research and discuss new approaches. Our will is to create a cross-disciplinary space of scientific debate open to sociologists and other scientists from other disciplines interested in analysing and understanding urban life in moving cities around the globe. We welcome papers from young and senior academics developing research on cities and urban life, expecting that everyone can take useful insights to their works from their participation in this conference.

    Migration and Generation

    16th International Conference on Migration

The 16th International Conference on Migration take place the 23–25th of June 2016 in innsbruck/Austria. This year, the conference will discuss the concept of generation in the context of migration, and will also examine the use of the concept of genera-tions in empirical research and in public discourse. Likewise of central concern here is to view the phenomenon of migration from an inter-generational perspective and to ask to what extent this can contribute to a better understanding of migration.

South and east mediterranean youth policies on a tightrope

The conference brings together a series of international researchers who examine youth policies within institutional structures and at the state level in six South and East Mediterranean countries (Tunisia, Morocco, Palestine, Egypt, Lebanon and Turkey). It sheds light on the politics of youth policies, sociological and economic obstacles to becoming "adults", and questions the historical turn after the 2011 "Arab Spring". Youth policies are examined at a macro-level in the areas of employment, family, migration and spatial planning in an attempt to understand the emergence of youth as a category, oftentimes identified with a public problem. The question of how various forms of marginalization and domination such as gender, social, urban/rural, ethnic, based on citizenship, etc. intersect and generate inequalities among youth in South and East Mediterranean countries is central to inquiry.

American public diplomacy in the Middle-East

The inverted pyramid paradigm? Genesis, institutions, strategies and reception

Politique Américaine, a political science journal published in French on US domestic politics and international strategies launches a call for papers for its special issue on: "American Public Diplomacy in the Middle-East: the inverted pyramid paradigm? Genesis, Institutions, Strategies and Receptions". Next to its impact on governments, public diplomacy is seen as a diplomatic practice aiming at directly or indirectly influencing civil societies. It encompasses all "seductive" strategies that a State implements towards the public opinions of another state or region. The growing importance of this idea highlights the necessity for the main players of international relations to maintain a multi-level dialogue with foreign civil societies in order to anticipate political and social developments initiated by other players than the State itself.

    Figures de l'Éros

Journal of Phenomenological and Existential Theory and Culture

Eros plays a central role in Western thought. In the philosophical and spiritual traditions, it usually refers to physical love and desire. Eros is a recurring character in the pre-Socratic cosmogonies, and it is the main impulse of the philosophical quest for truth in Plato’s Phaedrus. This Special Topics issue of PhænEx wishes to give a new impulse to philosophical reflections on this fundamental and ambiguous phenomenon, following an interdisciplinary perspective at the intersection of phenomenology, post-structuralism, and social sciences (psychology, sociology, sexology, anthropology, linguistics, etc.).

    Snapshots of Change

Assessing social transformations in qualitative research

The study of “change” is a central research topic in social science. However, how can we concretely assess social change when we conduct qualitative research which is based on case studies, and has a limited scope of inquiry both in terms of time and space? The complexity of human societies makes it difficult to know which elements to consider as relevant. Very often the multiple dynamics that are observable at any one time give an incoherent picture, where no clear direction is discernible. The presentations will be supported by concrete examples showing the method employed, the scope of relevance of the assessed change, as well as the lines of causality which are drawn consequently.

Defining and defying the concept of deviance and degeneration in the British Isles and North America in the 19th century

This one-day conference aims at exploring the definition(s) and contours of deviance and degeneration as it was conceived in the British Isles and North America in the 19th century. PhD students, postgraduate students and junior scholars whose research pertains to the study of deviant groups, whether self-defined or not, are particularly welcome to participate. Speakers will be invited to focus on the processes of definition of the standards of normality – whether religious, social, political, legal, medicalor sexual – as well as what those processes entailed for those who were labelled ‘deviants’. The role of scientists, doctors but also political authorities is of considerable interest in this respect, as are the ways in which normative standards were circumvented and challenged.

This workshop attempts to provide more insight on the relationship between Muslims who live in Europe and sports-physical activity. We would like to examine how Muslims make sense of religion and their religious identity in sportive activities and how public policies are organized vis-a-vis the needs of the Muslim populations in Europe. During this workshop we want to adress a range of issues such as space, gender, social inclusion, multiculturalism, citizenship, politics of identity and secularism.

Four Post-doctoral positions on "Luxury, Fashion and Social statuS in Early Modern South-Eastern Europe"

New Europe College - Institute for Advanced Study

Following the European Research Council competition for Consolidator Grants (2014), New Europe College became the Host Institution of such a grant. The project aims to trace the role luxury played in the modernisation process in South-Eastern Europe, taking into account the specific features of the region and how South-Eastern European peoples, and their Byzantine and Ottoman heritage are viewed through the stereotype of “Balkanism”. The project’s findings will help towards a better knowledge of changes in European society in its transition to modernity, and of similarities and differences between the various regions of Europe.

The Noses and Eyes of the City

Reinterpreting Early Modern Politics and Administrative Practices of Hygiene

The Specialist Session welcomes contributions that deal with questions of medical and administrative debates and with techniques of controlling and monitoring of the urban space by city authorities and the urban population. The aim is to create a basis for understanding contemporary hygienic assumptions concerning life in urban spaces. The papers may be focused on questions of practice, concerning the contemporary considerations to improve city space, political agenda, procedures to implement them and the “instruments” – that is most importantly: the use of senses – to control the implementation. The Contributions of this session will therefore challenge the “modern”, deprecated view on early modern hygienic questions and replace it with a view that is based on contemporary theories and contemporary instruments: the noses and eyes of the city.
