Norms in the Margins and Margins of the Norm
The Social Construction of Illegality
The conference "Norms in the Margins and Margins of the Norm, The Social Construction of Illegality" proposes to reflect on the relations between the dynamics of criminalization and the construction of state powers, on the one hand, and on criminal strategies – legal or not –, moral economies in the illegal spheres, the ploys and tactics of “deviant” groups on the other hand. -

Psychotic Experiences, Religion, and Spirituality
This conference is centered on reported or observed psychotic experiences and discusses the ways in which religious and spiritual idioms are mobilized by patients, as well as by medical and psychological practitioners and religious healers in their therapeutic relations. Overall, the conference covers a significant variety of social, institutional and cultural contexts. As an expected result, we should be able to better understand the ways in which culture and social institutions contribute to the shaping of individual psychotic experience, and how they create dynamics of integration and exclusion. In addition, by inviting social scientists and medical practitioners to confront their perspectives, we would like to question what appears to be the underlying constructivist stance on many recent perspectives on religious experience and spirituality linked to psychotic states. -

1st International Conference on Anthropology and Urban Conflict
Desertions, Counter-movements, and Forced Mobilizations in the Contemporary City
The aim of this conference is to make an inventory and to analyze, from different ethnographic approaches, those often invisible phenomena of daily or extraordinary disobedience designed for, or inspired by, a rejection of spatial, economic, political, and social order. However, in order to identify them as mechanisms aimed at denouncing a particular order, we must approach these by looking at concepts that synthesize at once the processes that impose a homogeneous order as well as the practices that challenge it. -

What about History then? Assessment of the role of history in Indian Studies

Flashbacks. Nostalgic media and mediated forms of nostalgia
Can media really be nostalgic? Which specific forms of nostalgia appear in contemporary society and why? Can people be nostalgic if they did not experience the past they pretend being nostalgic of? What kind of politics of nostalgia exist? What is the impact of nostalgia on the media market and its influence on economy? Finally, given the arbitrary (?) use of the past in all its imaginable variations and cultural systems, is it still possible to use the word nostalgia or should there be a neologism describing the transformation of the past in(to) the digital era? Could it even be possible to be simply nostalgic of nostalgia; finally describing the eternal research for (lost) identity? This international conference aims to explore nostalgia as a (mass) media phenomena and also seeks for contributions that treat any other mediated forms of nostalgia. -

Foreign Language Film Conference V
Submissions are invited for the fifth Foreign Language Film Conference, on the theme of Rights and Representations. In this historic setting of the American South, and in conjunction with Birmingham's 50th anniversary remembrance of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing, FLFC celebrates civil and human rights. Scholars will consider the question of civil rights in international cinematic traditions. How does film as an art and a genre represent civil rights, and human rights? What are the places of rebellion, terrorism, or non-violent resistance in forging individual freedoms, and how is this reflected in national cinematic traditions? How do international films address issues of discrimination, violence, repression, the struggle for social equality ? On the pedagogical side of the question, how do films about civil rights teach their viewers about international cultural and political traditions and movements ? How are these films incorporated into classroom discussions of global civil rights ? -

Structures of the XXth Century: architectural heritage and patrimonialization
The evolution of the architectural languages of the XX century, from modernist to post-modernist, has often stressed the importance of structures in expressing and fostering innovation. Journal Cadernos de Estudos Africanos thematic Issues
The journal Cadernos de Estudos Africanos seeks contributions for a thematic issue on the African presence in contemporary Portuguese society. We start from a broad understanding of this sizeable populace, comprising not only people born in Africa or those who have lived there but also their descendants who identify themselves as Africans, Afro-Portuguese or retornados, irrespective of their nationality. Our aim is thus to portray a large and heterogeneous population (regarding the countries they come from, and the diversity of life courses, ethnic loyalties and cultural references) that nonetheless shares Africa as a common geographical reference. These groups include, but are certainly not limited to, the so-called second generation of African immigrants and those who have returned from the former colonies. In the Portugal of today, a person’s African heritage, or a prolonged residence in Africa, tend to be significant biographical elements, in addition to being key markers of a social and cultural alterity that is often racialized.
