The Office as an interior (1880-1960)

Au cours de la« deuxième révolution industrielle » augmente considérablement l’activité dans le tertiaire et se développent les services administratifs dans le secteur industriel et public. L’employé devient ainsi la figure sociale de la modernité urbaine, qui témoigne aussi du rôle croissant de la femme dans ce secteur professionnel. Le colloque Office as an Interior (1880-1960) aborde l’essor du travail administratif entre 1880 et 1960 à travers l’analyse de l’émergence d´un espace nouveau, le bureau, qui par ses arrangements contribue à la diffusion de nouvelles formes de sociabilité et réalise des nouveaux modes d’organisation du travail. Ce colloque voudrait préciser l’analyse des rapports entre espace physique et espace social, entre matérialité et pratiques, entre stratégies et tactiques, entre structures et individus, tels qui ont été explorés par la récente sociologie de l’espace.

Bioanthropological meeting: a multidisciplinary approach

The I BAM follows a long tradition in the organization of scientific events with an international scope in the field of Biological Anthropology. The former Department of Anthropology and now the Department of Life Sciences in the University of Coimbra has, over the years, stood out not only in research but also in teaching Anthropology. To an organizing committee constituted by very young researchers, with deep connections to this institution, it is an honor to be able to count with all its support. The idea of this encounter arises from the urge to be closely involved in the practical applicability of the knowledge intersection, at the specific level of Biological Anthropology. This meeting aims to present the latest research that has been developed in several areas of this field.

The Nomadism of Social Anthropologists

CFP Midterm Conference of the Europeanist Network of the European Association of Social Anthropologists

While anthropologists of the past decades have devoted increasing attention both to questions of reflexivity and to people “on the move” such as migrants, relatively little attention has focused on the geographical and cultural movement of social anthropologists themselves, especially since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Even if there is growing interest in non-hegemonic anthropologies by scholars who have often lived in several countries and recent work on “the ethnographic self as resource” argues that anthropologists’ personal experiences provide potentially insightful ethnographic data that can enrich their scientific analysis, the consequences of past and present anthropologists’ nomadism on their own research – including their training, career and grant opportunities – have not been thoroughly analysed. It is common knowledge that today, in Europe and beyond, being “on the move” has increasingly become a part of many anthropologists’ lives.

While papers that address the conference’s theme "Knowing practices" are especially relevant, papers contributing to the advance of rigorous social scientific and humanities approaches to HIV and take other perspectives on the social sciences and humanities are also encouraged.

In Dreams Begin Responsibilities: The Consequences of Gay Rights Without Social Justice in the Transnational Sphere

Doing Gender 10 – Current Challenges of Feminisms, Thematic Symposia n°076

Historically, the Gay Liberation Movement emerged as a collective wish for social transformation regarding sexual practice, sex roles, gender prescriptions and the privitization/commodification of relationships. The movement was situated in a context of other movements for visionary social change regarding race, citizenship, women’s autonomy, children’s rights, national identity, regional self-determination and a revolution in the distribution of wealth. The AIDS crisis propelled a profound transformation of the LGBT community from a political movement to a consumer group. Abrupt changes in media representation, psychological consequences of the mass death experience, and the impact of widespread loss of generations and individuals in traumatic and sudden ways resulted in the grassroots Gay Liberation Movement fading into history, to be replaced by a Gay Rights Movement, controlled from the top down by national organizations with paid staff and LGBT individuals situated within ruling political parties, lobbying from within the cultural frameworks of those constructions. This confluence of Rights and Nation States, lead to what Rutgers Professor Jasbir Puar called “Homonationalism”, the granting of Gay Rights in the service of state interests rooted in supremacy ideology about race, gender, class and ethnicity.

The workshop will analyse the interaction and the interpenetration of nationality, ethnicity and identity through the problematic of transnationalism, globalization and nation-state perspectives. The workshop will be supplemented by practical visits to local communities. Participants are invited to consider the theoretical debates and issues in differing local areas with a variety of social practitioners and representatives to gain further insights of demographic, economic, philosophic, legal and socio-anthropological approaches.

La chambre d'enfant, un microcosme culturel

Le colloque « La chambre d’enfant, un microcosme culturel » vise à dresser l’état des connaissances sur la culture matérielle de l’enfant dans l’espace domestique suivant trois axes principaux. Ils ont été retenus pour mieux saisir la chambre d'enfant aussi bien dans son histoire que dans le monde contemporain, dans sa matérialité que dans ses représentations. Le premier envisagera la chambre d’enfant sous l’angle de l’architecture, comme un espace délimité spécifiquement réservé à l'enfant au sein de l'habitat. Le deuxième axe s’attachera à la chambre comme lieu privilégié des biens de l’enfance et de la consommation enfantine. Enfin le dernier axe considérera la chambre comme un espace éducatif, dans lequel peuvent cohabiter perspectives scolaires et univers du divertissement, visées adultes et points de vue enfantins.

Migrations internationales et temporalités en Méditerranée (XIXe-XXIe siècle)

Le programme transversal MIMED (Lieux et territoires des migrations en Méditerranée, XIXe-XXIe siècle) de la Maison méditerranéenne des sciences de l’homme d’Aix-en-Provence organise du 10 au 12 avril 2013 un colloque international et interdisciplinaire sur la question des temporalités dans les processus migratoires en Méditerranée du XIXe au XXIe siècle. Tout en prenant en compte le contexte historique, deux niveaux de réflexion pourraient être privilégiés dans l’appréhension des temporalités de la migration : celui des séquences temporelles qui structurent le phénomène migratoire à un niveau macro, et celui des rapports au temps entretenus par les migrants, à l’échelle de l’individu, de la famille, ou du groupe.

Convivialidade e super-diversidade a nível local

Our principal aim is to describe, analyze and compare new super-diverse convivial contexts, as they relate to the process of migrations shaping new cultural realms. Our approach does not involve the idealization of harmonic intercultural relations but considers convivial contexts as new fields of intercultural tensions and interactions as an attempt to understand their dynamics and the social, historic and personal factors that lead to willingness to coexist with ethnic heterogeneity or to reject it. Consequently, it envisions applying an innovative framework to understanding intercultural relations among national and migrant populations. From the perspective of social topography, the new convivial cultures are not associated with a specific geographic space. They correspond to different public contexts in which people with links to various ethnic or cultural groups interact.

Psychotic Experiences, Religion, and Spirituality

This conference is centered on reported or observed psychotic experiences and discusses the ways in which religious and spiritual idioms are mobilized by patients, as well as by medical and psychological practitioners and religious healers in their therapeutic relations. Overall, the conference covers a significant variety of social, institutional and cultural contexts. As an expected result, we should be able to better understand the ways in which culture and social institutions contribute to the shaping of individual psychotic experience, and how they create dynamics of integration and exclusion. In addition, by inviting social scientists and medical practitioners to confront their perspectives, we would like to question what appears to be the underlying constructivist stance on many recent perspectives on religious experience and spirituality linked to psychotic states.

The aim of this conference is to make an inventory and to analyze, from different ethnographic approaches, those often invisible phenomena of daily or extraordinary disobedience designed for, or inspired by, a rejection of spatial, economic, political, and social order. However, in order to identify them as mechanisms aimed at denouncing a particular order, we must approach these by looking at concepts that synthesize at once the processes that impose a homogeneous order as well as the practices that challenge it.
