    Embodiment

    “On_Culture”, issue 21, Spring 2027

The editorial team of On_Culture, would like to draw your attention to the Call for Abstracts for Issue #21 of On_Culture (Spring 2027) on “Embodiment”. This issue foregrounds four interrelated dimensions of embodiment. It thus opens up novel vistas for revisiting the “corporeal turn” of the 1990s, this time from a contemporary cultural studies perspective, asking what relational approaches can offer interdisciplinary analyses of culture today.

Governance of International Film Festivals: From Rules to Legitimacy

    Useful Gardens

The history and structure of gardens hold endless surprises and fascinating connections withother disciplines. Originally created as a natural but immutable place offering protection andshelter, gardens have evolved from the hortus conclusus to a place of fantastic architecture, celebrations and wonder. Despite the aesthetic development that was added to the symbolic oneof the medieval tradition, the garden never completely lost its medicinal and practical function, featuring areas dedicated to fruit trees, greenhouses reserved for exotic crops or plants whosemedicinal or dyeing properties were well known

Animal Behaviour and Environments: Ecological Perspectives from Antiquity to the Present

This conference aims, through a resolutely interdisciplinary approach, to explore the relations between animals and their environments. Bringing together scholars in ancient and medieval philology, the history of zoological knowledge, and contemporary ecological sciences, the event seeks to examine how living beings interact with their surroundings—and how these interactions have been conceptualised, described, and modelled from Antiquity to the present. Two main thematic axes will structure the discussion: 1. Animals and Environments: Ancient and Modern Ecologies; 2. Animal Ecological Awareness: Perception, Umwelt, and Narrative Models

    Queer Ecologies Across Socialisms

Queer Ecologies Across State Socialisms brings queer ecology into dialogue with the cultural, institutional, and environmental histories of global state socialist worlds. The conference asks how ideas of “nature” and sexuality were co-produced across bodies, policies, infrastructures, and landscapes - and how queer attachments and ecological critique emerged within socialist modernities. We invite academic and artistic work that rethinks socialist environmental governance beyond catastrophe narratives and traces alternative imaginaries of care, coexistence, and solidarity across more-than-human worlds.

“Scientiae”: Disciplines of Knowing in the Early Modern World

Building on Scientiae’s interdisciplinary legacy, and its study of the production and circulation of knowledge, we will underscore the interconnectedness of regions, periods, cultures, and material and intellectual traditions in the period between 1400 and 1800. Although centred around the emergence of modern natural science, Scientiae is intended for scholars working in any area of early-modern intellectual culture. The Scientiae network encompasses the long Renaissance period and seeks to integrate historiographical reflection into an approach that, since its creation, has been firmly rooted in epistemology and the history of science, as well as intellectual history, and the practice of knowledge in dialogue.

    What Can BodyCultures Do?

Ontological Pluralism in Medicine and the Humanities

This conference asks whether the biomedical humanities can intervene in the very constitution of the phenomena they study. We propose to rethink the body as a relational entity shaped by biological, social, environmental, and existential assemblages—moving beyond traditional partitions (body/mind, nature/culture, biological/social) that structure contemporary medicine. These dichotomies, by assigning allegedly separate domains to different disciplines, obscure the fundamental entanglements that characterize embodied existence.

    Heritage sensitive conservation policies

Sacred Forests and Spiritual Landscapes in the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot and Southeast Asia’s Terrestrial Ecoregions

The symposium offers a space to discuss a state-of-the-art overview of heritage-sensitive policies related to sacred forests and spiritual landscapes, with a focus on forest conservation practices based on Indigenous ecological ways of knowing and relating to forests. The seminar will explore the concept of indigeneity as a decolonial relational approach to forest dwellers that overcomes the rigid, top-down definition of who are Indigenous People and Local Communities (IPLCs). The seminar highlights recent advancements in interdisciplinary research, decolonial methodologies, political ecology analysis and ethical approaches to the conservation of sacred natural sites and spiritual landscapes.

    Lands of the Lost

A Field Guide to Dinosaur Parks Physical, Fictional, and for the Future

We invite submissions for Lands of the Lost: A Field Guide to Dinosaur Parks Physical, Fictional, and for the Future, an edited collection that explores extinct animal parks real, imagined, unrealized, or yet to be. Our goal is to bring together multi-disciplinary perspectives to examine parks across time and space, across fact and fiction. We seek to understand how these projects, which reconstitute and enclose long-extinct life forms, intersect with histories of science, capitalism, imperialism, environmental change, and more.
