Artworks and the meaningful connections among their parts

As an increasing number of studies are demonstrating with growing clarity, the analysis of certain aspects - or more precisely, components - of paintings through the lens of their materiality can reveal crucial insights into the artwork itself. These include not only the materials in the strict sense, such as canvas, wood, or nails, but also their composition as a whole, understood as a unified entity, essential to the artwork.

The Cladding of Art Nouveau Buildings Theory, history & practice of architectural covering materials: ceramics, hydraulic cement tiles, terrazzo, metlachi and more

International Symposium “Art Nouveau as a New EUtopia” (2024–2027)

Connecting to the main subject of the „Bringing Art Nouveau heritage back to life” symposium, the conference to be held in Budapest in 2026 intends to examine the topic of architectural covering materials in Art Nouveau buildings as part of a Gesamtkunstwerk system, after the Torino Declaration on the Preservation of the Art Nouveau Architecture (1994). Useful Gardens

The history and structure of gardens hold endless surprises and fascinating connections withother disciplines. Originally created as a natural but immutable place offering protection andshelter, gardens have evolved from the hortus conclusus to a place of fantastic architecture, celebrations and wonder. Despite the aesthetic development that was added to the symbolic oneof the medieval tradition, the garden never completely lost its medicinal and practical function, featuring areas dedicated to fruit trees, greenhouses reserved for exotic crops or plants whosemedicinal or dyeing properties were well known

Mobilising Heritage: Dance, Theatre, and Performance in the Age of (In)Tangibility

European Journal of Theatre and Performance, Vol. 8, No. 1

This turn toward the intangible and communal dimensions of heritage exposed deep tensions between preservation and change, expert authority and bottom-up participation, or institutional policies and bodily practices. These frictions are particularly visible in dance and the performing arts, where heritage is literally embodied, enacted, and reimagined through practice. In what this special issue terms the age of (in)tangibility, the performing arts are recognised as intangible heritage precisely as they are rendered tangible through documentation, digitisation, and policy frameworks, revealing a constitutive tension between embodied, relational knowledge that exists only in practice and the material, institutional forms through which heritage is named, governed, and sustained.

    Heritage entrepreneurs

Private developers in urban heritage contexts and ecosystems

A high degree of complexity, be it in terms of governance or actors’ diversity in local contexts, characterises heritage development projects, which increasingly rely on private interventions or public-private partnerships. In this context, the interplay between public and private interventions becomes a critical arena for research. Tensions, negotiations and innovations increasingly shape heritage development while highlighting the challenges and opportunities of the intervention of private actors in the revitalisation of urban heritage – particularly in contexts where heritage is commodified as a comparative advantage for rehabilitation projects. The main objective of this conference, which specifically focuses on the role of private actors in heritage urban contexts (UNESCO World Heritage sites, conservation areas, historic centres, etc.), is to explore the relationships and dynamics established between “heritage entrepreneurs” and other urban stakeholders in diverse heritage contexts as a means to shed light on how these combined actions produce heritage today.

    The Archaeologists’ City

The call for papers is now open for the new edition of the Intersections series, dedicated to the cross-disciplinary nature of urban history and the dialogue between disciplines, methods and perspectives of study. The 2026 seminar will focus on the city as seen by archaeologists: not only the ancient or medieval city, but all forms and temporalities of the urban dimension — from abandonment to processes of transformation, from continuities to industrial and contemporary landscapes.

Transnational Research for a Wider Impact

The Role of Cultural Heritage in a Changing World

This event synthesizes the findings from 22 transnational research projects to explore the societal impact of cultural heritage research through five interconnected thematic axes. The first axis examines methodological innovations in digital heritage, analyzing the transformative potential of technologies such as AI, virtual modeling, and advanced data analytics in research and protection. The second investigates participatory and co-creative frameworks for community engagement, assessing their role in sustaining heritage, reinforcing identity, and fostering social cohesion for sustainable development.

Arts and Crafts in the Late Ottoman Empire

Rethinking Practices and Concepts of Material Culture in Syria and Beyond (18th - early 20th c.)

The conference Arts and Crafts in the Late Ottoman Empire aims to advance art historical and interdisciplinary research on practices and concepts of material culture in Ottoman lands between the 18th and the early 20th centuries. While inviting contributions on all geographies of the Empire, our call for papers foregrounds late Ottoman Syria as a case through which to expand the analytical and historical horizons of Islamic art and architecture studies and to contribute to broader debates in Ottoman and Arab historiographies of modernity. We encourage authors to consider the analytical frameworks—temporalities, epistemes, and materialities—that underpin the conference’s critical inquiry into the entangled modernities of Ottoman arts and crafts.

Heritage dynamics in the urban peripheries

    Heritage and the Metropolis

Metropolitan cities are well understood to be in the course of constant change. The city’s edges push ever outward into the suburbs or the hinterland. Heritage, on the other hand, certainly in the guide of preservation is often constructed as resistance to change; and yet is not static. The call is aimed at researchers interested in the relationship between heritage and the metropolis, between heritage preservation and urbanisation, in different geographical contexts. We want to compare situations observed in the North and South, in formerly industrialised and non-industrialised regions, in very active metropolises and others in decline.

    Guiding Landscapes

Organized by the French Federation of Landscape Architects (FFP, Fédération Française du Paysage), the 61st World Congress of the International Federation of Landscape Architecture (IFLA) will take place in Nantes, France, from September 10-12, 2025, under the theme "Guiding Landscapes". Landscape architects play a key role in adapting cities to climate change at a variety of scales. Planning, conceiving, and managing new resilient urban districts, reorganizing the public realm by reopening soils, increasing rainwater infiltration, and developing urban biodiversity to cool cities are all essential challenges.
