Urban Kinships. Everyday Kinship and the making of the City

    “Articulo”, Journal of Urban Research

Social sciences were long dominated by the notion that cities are places where kinship ties are weakened (Parsons 1955), but this view is widely challenged today. In addressing “urban kinships,” this Articulo special issue aims to surpass the “great divide” (Weber and Dufy 2007) that still separates the study of kinship (reserved for anthropologists and traditional societies) from the study of the city (the favored field site for sociologists and research on the family). At a time when cities are dissolving into “the urban” and blended families are re-defining kinship, this issue suggests studying the co-production of kinship and the city, through an approach focusing on everyday practices.

    Monachisme urbain : 300-1300

Christianity emerged as an urban phenomenon, yet monasticism is more often than not presented as an escape from the sinful town into the wilderness, and as more concerned with the soul than with the body. Ascetics, however, have always had a vested interest in the city, and not only symbolically. Monasticism has been an important urban presence since Late Antiquity up to the Late Middle Ages, even if they were sometimes in competition with newer religious orders.

Archives, the Digital Turn and Governance in Africa

    “History in Africa” Journal

This featured section of History in Africa will address the wave of digitisation of archives in Africa over the last fifteen years. With the rise of information technologies, an increasing part of public – and to some extent private - African archives are being digitised and made accessible on the internet. This wave of digitisation is usually seen as a progress with the help of ambitious initiatives applying new technologies to cultural heritage of humanity such as the rescue of the manuscripts of Timbuktu or the Endangered Archives programme at the British Library. Yet as much as these new technologies raise enthusiasm, they also prompt discussions amongst researchers and archivists, which go from intellectual property to sovereignty and governance.

Victorians like us – Domesticity and worldliness

    Issue of “Open Cultural Studies”

From novels to government reports, the Victorians attached unprecedented significance to domesticity. The household was a central institution, and their occupants played out their different roles according to custom and circumstance. Within its sphere, gender, class, economic and political conflicts were played out as the household provided the background for important social practices. These practices ranged from the kitchen to the parlour, from the street to the Houses of Parliament, from the colonial metropole to the British colonial outposts in Africa, Asia, Australia and the Pacific.

Conflict management in modern diplomacy (1500-1914)

The conference, which is organised by the research group “Diplomacy in Conflict”, focuses on conflict management as the constant processes of mediation and negotiation, which included efforts but also resistance, success but also failure. Diplomatic contacts were not only destined to resolve political or military conflicts, but could also be highly conflictual themselves, due to cultural differences, such as incompatible codes or stereotypes. Diplomatic strategies comprised the avoidance and resolution of conflicts as well as their deliberate escalation or provocation. Furthermore, since the end of the 18th century, cultural conflicts became increasingly charged with national connotations.

    The international recognition of States

    From Antiquity to Modern Times

International recognition creates legitimacy for the independent existence of new, sovereign political units. On the one hand, it is a re-ordering process; on the other, it functions as a conflict-resolution mechanism within the framework of the international coping practice of crises. As a legal, political and territorial reorganization, it calls into question the various social actors and makes it necessary to mobilize scientific, technical, intellectual and / or symbolic means. The creation of a new, sovereign unity also forces the redistribution of political power and social authority. It can be the trigger of an inter-state war or a civil war, lead to territorial fragmentation, the appearance of an independent nation on the world stage, or the beginning of a long period of peace. This international colloquium seeks to explore the figure of recognition in all its historical complexity and from various points of view.

4th annual conference of the International Federation for Public History (IFPH-FIHP)

The First Conference of the Italian Public History Association in Ravenna will bring together Public Historians from all regions in the Italian Peninsula who will discuss the reasons for a national route to the discipline. Awareness of the importance of Public History practices in Italy has become widespread only a few years ago. Italy felt the need to enhance a reflection and a dialogue among scholars and practitioners in order to define the scientific status of public historians. The Ravenna conference hopes to favour this process by comparing different experiences and disciplinary approaches and to inquire about the state of the discipline at national and international level.

The imagined woman in Medieval and Early Modern Europe

    Interdisciplinary perspectives

With a decidedly interdisciplinary agenda, and focusing on Medieval and Early Modern Europe, this conference investigates the image and imagery of women, as well as the concepts attached to both. In suggesting an approach capable of integrating diverse aspects, its aim is to complement the research so far, which has tended to focus either on historical studies concerning influential female individuals and writers, or on works scrutinizing the literary imagery relating to women.

Memory and the making of knowledge in the Early Modern world

While memory is an established sub-field within these disciplines, its themes and sources have led to an over-representation of the ancient and modern worlds, meaning that the early modern era has been comparatively neglected. The School seeks not merely to redress this imbalance, but also to explore how studies of memory and early modernity might shape one another in the future. Participants in the Summer School, which will take place between 18 and 22 September 2017, will have the opportunity to discuss the most recent research presented by leading scholars in the field, to learn or refine skills in workshops that focus on the media and techniques of memory, and to present their own work to a uniquely qualified and supportive international peer group.

The materiality and spatiality of death, burial and commemoration

Special issue in the Journal “Mortality”

The interdisciplinary journal Mortality calls for submissions from all disciplines to reflect on the materiality and spatiality of death, burial and commemoration: Death, dying and burial produce artefacts and occur in spatial contexts. The interplay between such materiality, spatiality and the bereaved who commemorate the dead yields interpretations and creates meanings that can change over time. In this special issue we want to publish papers that explore this interplay by going beyond the consideration of simple grave artefacts on the one hand and graveyards as a space on the other hand, to examine the specific interrelationships between materiality, spatiality, the living and the dead.
