Consumers and producers’ perspectives

The Research Symposium welcomes, once a year, international researchers and professionals to present their work and discuss issues related to food and hospitality. Each year, a specific topic is addressed from the point of view of multiple scientific fields such as health sciences, nutrition, psychology, cognition, sociology, economics, etc., offering an enriching overview on different topics. The eight edition of the International Research Symposium aims to share up-to-date research on managing hunger and satiety both from the consumers and from the producer’s perspectives. More, this day will be devoted to address appetite and food intake mechanisms in relation to pleasure and health in a product context or a food service context.

The World Customs Organization (WCO) and the Azerbaijan Customs are pleased to announce the 10th annual WCO PICARD conference. The conference will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 8 to 10 September 2015. Papers should focus on Customs or, more globally, the regulation, dynamics, and practices of the international trade of goods. The WCO encourages attendance and paper submissions from anthropologists, economists, geographers, historians, lawyers, and political scientists. Schengen: people, borders and mobility

In the era of globalization, which benefits the implementation of policies of both stimulus or repression for the movement of people, academics have been fostering discussion around topics and concepts related with migration, borders and mobility. This epistemological basis enables us to apprehend the complexity of the European area and invites us to examine the boundaries or lack of it that separate territories. The conference also seeks to analyze the changes in the concepts of border and border control; to understand how residents in the Schengen Area – “native” or immigrants – build their national and transnational identity; to assess the evolution of mobility within the Schengen Area, which in turn allows us to perceive the relations between regions, states and individuals and to explain the various impacts of the Schengen agreements in the territories, people and societies and their border experiences.

The Relationship between Intellectual Property and its Physical Embodiment

This conference aims to look at the relationship between intellectual property and its physical materialisations, with a particular focus on the issue of access and the challenges of new technologies. Though intellectual property protects the intangible, it is indisputable that intellectual property goods classically had to be physically materialised in order to been joyed or used. This materialisation can, however, challenge our theoretical notion of the intangible and the tangible as constituting discrete forms of property and can have serious consequences on access to intellectual property goods. Our aim is to address the divide between the intangible and the tangible from the perspective of issues of access and problems relating to new technologies.

Keep it Simple, Make it Fast! Crossing Borders of Underground Music Scenes

KISMIF International Conference 2015

The submission of papers for this conference is open to academic researchers working in all areas of sociology, anthropology, history, cultural economics, geography, urban planning, media and cultural studies and cognate disciplines, including design, illustration musicology, popular music and visual and performing arts. This initiative follows the great success of the first KISMIF conference (held in July, 2014). Montagnes et conflictualité : le conflit, facteur d’adaptations et d’innovations territoriales

L’objet de ce numéro thématique de la revue Journal of Alpine Research | Revue de Géographie Alpine est d’aborder la montagne sous l’angle de la conflictualité, plus particulièrement dans la relation entre conflit et territoire. Le conflit est envisagé ici dans un sens large, d’opposition et de lutte, armée ou non, qui couvre les aspects politiques, mais aussi les aspects militaires, sociaux et culturels, recoupant les notions de résistances ou de réactions, dans leur capacité à générer de l’innovation. Le contexte montagnard invite à examiner les dimensions territoriales du conflit : que produit cette situation aux échelles locales ? Et en quoi fait-elle intervenir des spécificités morphologiques, des valeurs ou des identités montagnardes ?

La 15^e conférence internationale sur les migrations se tiendra du 18 au 20 juin 2015 à Dudelange au Luxembourg. Portée par un réseau d'institution germanophone, cette conférence accepte les communications en anglais et en allemand. The Many Faces of Slavery: non-traditional slave experiences in the Atlantic World

By the 18^th century, racial slavery had matured into a fully-fledged, firmly established, profitable form of labour in the Atlantic World. In slave societies, the development of the plantation unit led both to the geographical concentration of the slave population and to a growing homogenization of the activities bondsmen performed. However, throughout the Atlantic World, the existence of phenomena such as urban slavery, slave self-hiring, quasi-free or nominal slaves, domestic slave concubines, slave vendors, slave sailors, slave preachers, slave overseers, and many other types of “societies with slaves,” broadens our traditional conception of slavery by complicating the slave experience. This conference does not aim to challenge the significance of the plantation system, but, by using it as a paradigm, seeks to assess the extent and nature of non-traditional forms of slavery in the context of the historical evolution of labour in the Atlantic World.

This book will follow an international conference taking place in Rennes (France), November 27-28, 2014, which will gather specialists on issues related to indigenous peoples and regional integration organizations. The conference and the book are directed by Nathalie Hervé-Fournereau (DR CNRS University of Rennes) and Sophie Thériault (Associate Professor, University of Ottawa with the support of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law and the french society for environmental law. The conference and the book are part of a larger research and networking project conducted by the Interdisciplinary thematic Network BIODISCEE of the CNRS INEE, with the support of the Centre d’Excellence Jean Monnet of Rennes and the Franco-Canadian research program on Regional Integration Organizations in the world.

Enjeux, pratiques et influences des acteurs non-étatiques (XVIIIe-XXIe siècle)

La fin de la guerre froide a été l’occasion de (re)découvrir le poids des acteurs non-étatiques dans une diplomatie de plus en plus mondialisée. Selon Richard Langhorne, c’est avec le Congrès de Vienne de 1961 que s’amorce le processus de déliquescence de la diplomatie classique née au XVII^e siècle dans laquelle seuls les États jouaient véritablement un rôle. Cet affaiblissement progressif des États a conduit à l’effacement des frontières traditionnelles entre ce qui relève de l’action diplomatique officielle et des relations internationales plus informelles, menées en marge des États. Le poids croissant de divers acteurs non-étatiques sur la scène internationale est un signe révélateur de cette transition.

Customer-facing service work as a moment of truth?

European Group for Organization Studies (EGOS) 2015 – Subtheme n°64

The proportion of people working in jobs where dealing with a client/customer is essential has grown considerably (e.g. MacDonald & Merrill, 2009). Although this could encourage the investigation of differences and singularities of service work, managerialist approaches rather tend to assume universal management models, based on a prescriptive set of human resources practices and a harmonious vision of the relationships between management, customers and employees. Writing within this tradition, Norman (1984) labeled the point at which client/customer and service worker interact as the 'moment of truth' for the service firm. This sub-theme asks scholars to critically reflect on what kind of truth claims are put forward, enacted and experienced within service interactions, and on how we, as scholars, mediate these truth claims. A different set of answers to these questions are suggested, for instance, within sociological approaches that analyse service settings as based on potentially antagonistic relationships leading to contradictions and tensions between the parties involved (e.g. Korczynski, 2002; Lopez, 2010).
