  W. E. B. Du Bois, Scholar, Activist and Passeur between America, Europe and Africa

  Foundations, Circulations and Legacies

  Trained in Classical languages (Latin and Greek), Philosophy, Sociology and History, both in the US and Europe, W. E. B. Du Bois’s intellectual inquiry into the nature of Blackness covers a wide range of disciplines, from History to Political Philosophy, from Sociology to Literature and Poetry, from Art Criticism to Musicology. The colloquium will embrace this multiplicity of approaches which characterizes Du Bois’s work and, at the same time, capture the profound unity of his thought which can be found in the analysis of the “concept of race.” Special attention will also be given to the determinant role played by W. E. B. Du Bois in the transatlantic circulation of knowledge and intellectual commerce between the US, Europe and Africa.

  Música, tradición y creatividad en la era digital

  Nuevas perspectivas etnomusicológicas desde el Sur Global

  Este simposio explorará cómo los medios digitales y las nuevas tecnologías han afectado las dinámicas a través de las cuales los músicos, productores e investigadores experimentan y se involucran con formas musicales “tradicionales”, en Colombia y en otras partes del mundo. Los participantes están invitados a compartir sus resultados de investigación y sus experimentaciones metodológicas en el campo de la etnomusicología aplicada, de la pedagogía musical, de la interpretación, de la producción audionumérica o de las humanidades digitales a partir del estudio del impacto de las tecnologías numéricas sobre prácticas musicales actuales. Este simposio contará también con la presencia de varios músicos y productores locales que presentarán talleres prácticos y conversatorios sobre músicas “tradicionales” colombianas y de otros países del sur global.

  Mobilizing Voters in the United States and the United Kingdom: political strategies from parties and grassroots organizations (1867 – 2017)

  Following two different and yet complementary approaches (one from the top down with parties and the other from the bottom up with grassroots organizations), we propose to compare how potential voters have been appealed to, through the use of different strategies and tools of communication”. Whether it be organizations or parties, it will be interesting to analyze how these groups either (re)connect citizens with politics or give birth to social movements which durably occupy the political landscape of the United States and the United Kingdom. Common features may be observed along with distinct approaches particularly adapted to the specificity of each country concerned.

The papers aim to demonstrate that we cannot understand the emergence and transformation of social groups across the modern world, such as the aristocracy, the economic bourgeoisie, the educated middle classes, or the peasantry, without considering the impact of global entanglements on class formation.

Comment des notions spatiales de territoire, de région, de nations, etc., issues historiquement des contextes européens, ont-elles (ou doivent-elles être) reconstruites dans les contextes canadiens, notamment au prisme des appartenances (communautés, nations, etc.) ? Comment s’articulent les échelles de référence et notamment la région en fonction des provinces, de leur place dans le système canadien et des projets qui construisent le territoire (place du Québec, revendications autochtones) ?

  Archives, history, and memory from the Age of Revolution until the First World War

  The long nineteenth century witnessed four major historical processes of the utmost significance: the modernisation of the state, nation-state building, the independence of the American colonies from Europe, and the colonisation of the African and Asian continents. The modernising of the state entailed its growth and bearing on the economy and society, the widening of the state’s role, the “bureaucratization” of its administrative apparatus, and protracted democratisation. Along came the reduction or removal of competing powers, namely the church and aristocracy. The state also became a vehicle for the enshrinement of private property, free enterprise and, increasingly, the freedom of association among citizens. In addition, the modernised state would favour and support nation-state building in a number of ways.

  Seeing Politics through Intermediation and Intermediaries

  This seminar proposes to look at politics through the lens of political intermediaries and what they do, i.e. intermediation. Intermediaries can be defined as an assorted group of actors (political brokers, political parties, interest groups, movements) who acts as a hinge between two or more levels, actors or social institutions; while intermediation , as a process, encompasses all the mediations that these actors perform in order to keep the political system intact (Zaremberg, Guarneros-Meza, and Lavalle 2017; Gunther, Puhle, and Montero 2007; Kitschelt 2004; Smith 2007). The question we are interested in relates to the transformations in the roles of these agents and processes of mediation since the neo-liberal transformation has engulfed the processes of public policy formulation, contestation and enactment.

  Colonisations, revolutions, and reinventions in early America and the Atlantic World 1600-1848

  8th biannual conference of the European Early American Studies Association

  This call for papers invites established scholars, post-doctoral students and graduate students to re-examine the fundamental concept of Atlantic history in light of current research on the themes of colonisations, revolutions, and reinventions, from 1600 to 1848. It is also an opportunity to examine the history of transformations in early America and, broadly, the early modern world, by taking fuller account of scholarship on the politics of primitive globalisation. We will focus on the empires that organised European settlements in disrupting and dislocating native peoples, prompting indigenous cultures to re-invent themselves; but we will  also be attentive to the processes that led to the formation of new Euro-American societies in the Americas, often shaped by the enslavement of Africans and other forms of unfree labor. In the North-American colonies, the West Indies, India, Latin America, and Africa, entire peoples and their lands were reinvented by trading companies, individual administrators, theoreticians and executors of empires, as well as by those rare voices, many of who were abolitionists, who developed a critical approach to European expansion abroad.

La Rust Belt désigne de manière assez imprécise la région désindustrialisée située autour des Grands Lacs du Nord des États-Unis, recouvrant tout ou partie du Wisconsin, du Michigan, de l’Illinois, de l’Indiana, de l’Ohio, de la Virginie occidentale, de la Pennsylvanie, ainsi que certains comtés du nord-ouest de l’État de New York).

  De Gruyter and the team of the Art Market Dictionary (AMD) are currently looking for authors interested in contributing to their encyclopedia project. The AMD is the first reference work providing encompassing information on commercial art galleries, dealers, auction houses, fairs and advisers in Europe, the USA and Canada in the 20th and 21st centuries. Due to appear in 2020, it will be published in print and as an online searchable database. It is edited by Johannes Nathan and supported by a number of specialized institutions such as the Getty Research Institute, the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, or the Archives of American Art.

  The aim of this conference is to rethink the history of the 19^th amendment by reassessing its significance as well as its multifaceted legacy. Individual papers may address, but are not limited to, the following topics: The place of suffrage in early feminisms before and after 1920: Was woman suffrage a central demand of the women’s rights movement in the nineteenth and early twentieth century? The place of suffrage in the definitions of women’s citizenships before and after 1920; The long 19^th amendment from a transnational and international perspective: To what extent was the American fight for woman suffrage specific to the United States? What were the international networks that American suffragists benefited from before 1920?

  Troisième symposium étudiant international sur l'histoire du crime

  Le troisième Symposium on the History of Crime est un forum ouvert aux étudiants pour leur permettre d’explorer les problématiques liées à l’histoire du crime. Ce symposium annuel a vocation à rassembler des doctorants, des docteurs, des étudiants en master ainsi que des enseignants-chercheurs en début de carrière dans un environnement académique accueillant et amical propice à la discussion et au débat. Les deux premières éditions de ce symposium se sont déroulées en Angleterre. La troisième édition réunira à Paris des étudiants venus des États-Unis, d’Angleterre et de France. Nous donnons au Symposium on the History of crime une portée volontairement large et une dimension transdisciplinaire en mêlant des thématiques et des sujets divers. L’objectif est d’encourager les jeunes chercheurs à participer et à présenter, en anglais, leurs recherches sur le crime, l’histoire du crime et le droit pénal.
