How Are Science and Technology Engaged in Eco-Innovations?
3rd ISA Forum of Sociology: joint Session RC23 and RC24
The aim of this joint session organized during the 3rd ISA Forum is to explore the various ways in which eco-innovations are studied at the intersection of environmental sociology with the sociology of science and technology. The session invites scholars who improve our understanding about the technical resolution of environmental issues. By so doing, we would like to open new paths for analysing the production, the adoption and the institutionalisation of ecoinnovations, but also the mobilization of skills and knowledge.

Constructing the Past, Present and Future Families through Rituals
At the beginning of the 20th century, The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life (Durkheim, 1912) paved the way for sociology to explore, conceptualize and understand the power of rituals in our lives. Since then, rituals ceased to be envisaged in the restricted area of religion and the sacred; its study gradually extended to several dimensions of the everyday interaction and social imaginaries. Family rituals constitute no exception. Rituals have never been as studied and celebrated as they are now all around the world.

23rd International Conference of Europeanists
The Council for European Studies (CES) seeks conference proposals that explore the quality of resilience in Europe. It encourages proposals from the widest range of disciplines and, in particular, proposals that combine disciplines, nationalities, and generations. CES invites proposals for panels, roundtables, book discussions and individual papers on the study of Europe, broadly defined, and strongly encourages participants to submit their proposals as part of an organized panel. Full panel proposals will be given top priority in the selection process.

Sounds and voices on the international stage: understanding musical diplomacies
In international relations, music and diplomacy are strongly interrelated. Diplomats have gathered for musical events and musicians served as representatives. Whatever political unit is under consideration (city-states, empires, nation-states), music is a component of diplomacy, its ceremonies, and its strategies. There is a new interest for this dimension of international reality in History (Flechet & Marès, Gienow-Hecht), Musicology (Ahrendt et al, Fosler-Lussier), and International Relations (Dillon, Bleiker, Street) – beyond the aesthetic and cultural turns that marked these disciplines.

Research Residential Program at Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies
Fung Global Fellows Program “International Society: Institutions and Actors in Global Governance”
Princeton University is pleased to announce the call for applications to the Fung Global Fellows Program at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS). Each year the program selects six scholars from around the world to be in residence at Princeton for an academic year and to engage in research and discussion around a common theme. During the academic year 2016/17, the theme for the Fung Global Fellows Program will be “International Society: Institutions and Actors in Global Governance.” The growth of international organizations and transnational actors has brought about the emergence of a dense international society above the nation-state. Under what circumstances do new international organizations or transnational associations emerge, and when do they expand in their membership and jurisdiction? Does international society function as a constraint on states? How do states and societal actors navigate the complex and overlapping jurisdictions of international organizations? In what ways do international organizations and associations function as distinct cultures or as bureaucracies with their own interests?

Collecting Cases: Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries Visions of Society
During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries case studies focusing on deviant behaviour (such as crime, suicide or mental illness) and exceptional situations became an important part of both popular culture and the emerging human sciences. The goal of this workshop is to explore how these collections of cases, through their inclusions, exclusions and narrative and rhetorical strategies, comment on and convey an image of the society of their times or of the (recent) past. The long-term aim of this project is to publish an edited volume exploring these issues.

Beyond the great beauty. Rescaling heritage and tourism
Intimate relationships exist between the enhancement and preservation of cultural heritage and tourism as a fundamental driver for regional development. The time has come to give due recognition to there scaling processes affecting heritage and tourism destinations, intended both as upscaling and downscaling. Rescaling heritage andtourism destinations can be seen as both a strategy pursued by national and regional agencies, or as unintended consequences of the constant interplay between an increasingly complex array of stakeholders, including cross-national institutions and local communities.

Workplace democracy: arguments, policies, practices
While democracy is usually taken for granted within the political sphere, it usually draws less attention in the economic realm and our societies tolerate highly undemocratic forms of economic organizations, which prompts many questions: How is it possible to question this asymmetry? Does justice require democracy in the workplace? How can we make sense of democratic ideals within economic organizations? Is it possible to draw an analogy between states and business firms? Which institutional forms can workplace democracy take? What are the best theoretical frameworks to articulate the ideals of workplace democracy? This international conference aims to bring together experts in political philosophy, business ethics, sociology, history, political science, economy and management around these issues.

The economic agent and its representation(s)
3rd International Conference Economic Philosophy
It goes without saying that how the “economic agent” is represented does matter to the utmost. It matters as much for economic theory as for empirical investigations that are based upon such models. It matters in the way institutions emerge, as to how societies get organized, and for the many devices contributing to the “general good” (whether they appear spontaneously, or are pragmatically and purposely created). It matters also for correcting incomplete or missing markets.

Women Serving in the Armed Forces: Shaping Modern Values and Beyond
Traditionally, women have been excluded from many roles in the military, most especially combat roles. In recent years, however, that has all changed, first unofficially, and finally officially: women have been de facto serving in combat roles for the last decade or so, and the first female candidates have been or in all probability soon will be admitted to Marine Corps Infantry training and the US Army Ranger School.

Research, pedagogic sessions and tools for controversy mapping
FORCCAST Summer School 2015
In 2014, we started the FORCCAST summer school with a provocative question: “What is a good controversy?”. We began by lining up case studies selected by participants which were then discussed by participants in small groups. We would like to continue this exercise by inviting scholars working on controversies to present their case study and situate the notion of “controversies” in relation to more established and used social sciences concepts. It is not unfair to detect a somewhat casual use of “controversies” as an analytical resource. Against this trend, we encourage scholars to present research that falls within this area, and also to refine the coarse nature of the very term “controversy”. Over the years, we will build a repository of case studies that should help all of us to analyze the diversity behind the use of the term “controversies”, to identify some patterns, and hopefully to build a common typology.

Engaging Society in Innovation and Creativity
Perspectives from Social Sciences and Humanities

Radical Americas Symposium 2015
The aim of the event is to bring a range of disciplinary and geographical perspectives to bear on radicalism throughout the Americas. Our definition of radicalism is a broad one, encompassing both political radicalism as an object of study, and radical analytical approaches to the societies and cultures of the Americas. We welcome proposals that deal with any aspect of radicalism, from the democratic and republican radicalisms of the nineteenth century; to the socialist, anarchist, communist, and populist radicalisms of the twentieth century; as well as contemporary identity politics, social movements, and twenty-first century radicalisms.

Participating in innovation, innovating in participation
A conference organized by the Interdisciplinary Institute on Innovation (i3)
The call for new forms of participation has become common in the public sphere, promising renewed forms of public engagement, more efficient industrial processes, and more democratic decision-making processes. Technological innovation is a particular case when considering current discourses of participation. It is both problematised as needing more developed or open forms of participation, and proposed as a mean for experimenting with original participatory formats, for example, in: crowdfunding, citizen science, amateur reviewing/rating, online communities for public debates, consumer participation in (participatory) product design.

Travel and Sojourn in the Early Nineteenth Century
Beyond Naples, toward Amalfi and Sorrento
During the first half of the nineteenth century traveling and sojourning in Europe reflected a cultural climate marked by both resistance and enthusiasm. The conference is intended as well to cast light on the evolving changes in travel and sojourn in Naples and localities along the gulf during the first half of the nineteenth century, not failing to draw comparisons with other areas of Mediterranean Europe.

The social sciences and humanities have developed considerably in the last thirty years in different Asian countries where both theoretical approaches and methodologies have been constantly changing. As a result of the circulation and globalisation of knowledge, new centres and new peripheral areas have been formed and new hierarchies have quietly emerged, giving rise in turn to new competitive environments in which innovative knowledge is being produced. The centres in which knowledge in the social sciences and humanities is produced have moved towards Asia and in particular to China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan and India.
