Materiality of Women’s Crafts in Pre-Modern Societies of the Mediterranean Worlds: a Diachronic Discussion about Agency, Identity, and Practices

We propose this session to bring together researchers examining women’s craft practices and to deepen our understanding of their identities and agency through the materiality of these activities. Materiality is understood here as encompassing artefacts and gestures: thus tools, waste, but also workspaces, as well as traces on objects and traces on human remains (work-related illnesses, for example). The purpose of this session is to review the current state of research on this topic, share questions, difficulties, and advances.

Mobilising Heritage: Dance, Theatre, and Performance in the Age of (In)Tangibility

European Journal of Theatre and Performance, Vol. 8, No. 1

This turn toward the intangible and communal dimensions of heritage exposed deep tensions between preservation and change, expert authority and bottom-up participation, or institutional policies and bodily practices. These frictions are particularly visible in dance and the performing arts, where heritage is literally embodied, enacted, and reimagined through practice. In what this special issue terms the age of (in)tangibility, the performing arts are recognised as intangible heritage precisely as they are rendered tangible through documentation, digitisation, and policy frameworks, revealing a constitutive tension between embodied, relational knowledge that exists only in practice and the material, institutional forms through which heritage is named, governed, and sustained.

Innovations that increase co-creation, responsiveness and the impact of citizen voice in social services

Final International Conference of the Horizon Europe Project RESPONSIVE

This international conference explores the question of how democracy can be enhanced within Europe’s social sector. It asks how citizens can shape the work of social services and what innovations can improve the responsiveness of practitioners, services, and policymakers to input from citizens using social services. In particular, the conference aims to highlight solutions that have been co-created by citizen groups and social services to promote inclusiveness, reduce inequalities in civic participation and widen the diversity of citizen voices at different stages of social service delivery or social policy-making processes.

Comrade Consumer: Shopping, Style, and Desire on Socialist Screens

To many casual viewers, socialist cinema from Central Europe and the Soviet Union rarely evokes images of beauty parlors, leisurely shopping, or browsing exotic groceries—let alone consumer abundance and hired domestic help. Yet throughout the relatively “liberal” 1960s, the murky 1970s, and the tentative promise of the 1980s, nationalized film and television studios in the Polish People’s Republic, Czechoslovakia, and the USSR frequently returned to shopping as pastime, leisure, and aspiration, constructing surprisingly layered images of consumption under socialism.

Derrière le voile de l’anonymat : enjeux éthiques et récits culturels à l’ère de l’innovation numérique

At first glance, the concept of “anonymity” may seem simple: any actor who acts without revealing their identity is acting anonymously. However, this superficial simplicity hides considerable technological, social, and political complexity. What conditions make anonymity necessary for expression, cooperation, and judgment? The cultural, ethical, and narrative dimensions of “anonymity” in contemporary digital environments affect both administrative and creative life. With a perspective that combines the techniques of law with those of sociology, politicalscience, cultural studies, and narratology, this project seeks to uncover the cultural transformations that underpin “anonymity’ in practice, through its new or emerging instruments and narrative features.

    Market Research in the Making

We invite contributions that focus on the study of market research in the making, in various countries in Europe and elsewhere. The term ‘making’ should be understood here in both senses of the word (the emergence of the field in the 20th century, and the making, i.e. the day-to-day manufacturing of market research surveys). By focusing on the making of market research, we aim to shift the focus away from leading figures in the sector, to examine a more comprehensive range of individuals involved in conducting surveys at different stages. What was the division of labour, from fieldwork to report writing ?
