    Abundance or Sufficiency?

The Left’s Diverging Paths in the Green Transition

Since the 1970s, environmental constraints, shifting social values, and the crisis of post-war productivism have profoundly challenged the Western left. Once grounded in beliefs in scientific progress, technological innovations, and rising material prosperity, left-wing movements have increasingly been forced to confront planetary limits, rising inequality, and growing public ambivalence toward technoscience. These tensions have crystallised in contemporary debates on the Green Transition, where competing visions of abundance (growth-oriented technological optimism) and sufficiency (degrowth, sobriété, post-productivism) shape political and social antagonisms.

A political anthropology perspective on the art of crafting survival possibilities through (de)polarizing practices

    Into the ordinariness of citizenship

Anthropological investigations of citizenship offer a wide range of descriptions of various practices of (de)polarization, making manifest the connection between citizenship and a strange multiplicity of political imaginaries that cannot be reduced to statism or, more generally, to a “political ontology of violence”. As such, anthropology of citizenship invites us not to think of politics beyond (de)polarization but, rather, to look—through descriptive and comparative perspectives—at the variety of its practices, along with their specific political imaginaries, and to understand how they constitute the very “ordinariness” of citizenship.

French and Francophone Philosophers and the Development of LGBTQIA+ Movements in the 20th Century

This international one-day conference, held during LGBTQ+ History Month, will explore the relationship between French and Francophone philosophy and the development of LGBTQIA+ movements across the twentieth century. The intellectual contributions of figures such as Simone de Beauvoir, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Monique Wittig, and Hélène Cixous profoundly shaped how we think about gender, sexuality, embodiment, and power. The aim of this event is to bring together academic research, creative expression, and political engagement.

    Translational Epistemologies and Open Science

Towards Equitable and Sustainable Ecosystems of Knowledge Production and Dissemination

Translation has emerged in recent decades as a keyword in disciplines such as cultural history, anthropology and science and technology studies (STS). Moreover, since around the turn of this century it has become an institutionalized concept in medicine – as evident in the increasing ubiquity of knowledge translation and translational research activities that attempt to put research-based knowledge into practice (Ødemark and Engebretsen 2018).This event will provide a forum for engaging with epistemologies and scholarly initiatives that seek to open up spaces for equitable and ethically responsible reflection on translation within various ecosystems of knowledge and society at large.

Violence and Empire. From the Early 1800s to the End of the Great War

From the early 1800s, the formation, consolidation, and maintenance of empires were increasingly bound to new logics of state power, technological advancements, and legal rationalisation and justification. Despite narratives of civilising missions and administrative modernisation, violence remained a central practice of imperial rule, both as an instrument of conquest and a mechanism for governing already established colonial regimes. This conference invites historians and scholars of related disciplines to consider the various ways in which violence operated within imperial systems, how it was implemented, codified and justified legally and culturally, along with its contemporary perception in the imperial metropolis and its remembrance and subsequent legacies that continuously remain influential until the present day.

    Indigenous Peoples in Global Politics

Monções: Revista de Relações Internacionais da UFGD

This special issue aims to gather contributions from researchers studying indigenous peoples in international politics. We particularly – though not exclusively – encourage submissions on topics such as: How does the political action of indigenous peoples yield pressure on traditional concepts such as politics, sovereignty, international cooperation, and global governance? To what extent and through what mechanisms do these practices subvert or are co-opted by the hegemonic structures of the international system? In what ways do indigenous philosophies and worldviews challenge the colonial logics of the Anthropocene, extractivism, and the geopolitics of knowledge?

Extreme Rigth and Democracy in Europe After the Second World War

    Coexistence, Contrasts, Contradictions

It seems urgent to reflect on how democracies have responded to the presence of extreme rightwing movements, both in terms of political practices and rhetoric. Have democracies actively opposed the extreme right, or have they opted for strategies of containment and coexistence? Equally important is to examine the perspective of the extreme right: how has it interpreted and narrated the (supposed) coexistence with the democratic system? How has it dealt with the legacy of fascism and to what extent has it adapted to the culture of democracy? This conference will analyze the language and culture of the extreme right, paying special attention to its critiques of democracy, including its reaction of Enlightenment values and claims that democracy operates a double standard, tolerant in theory, but marginalizing and punishing the extreme right in practice. Giving historical depth to the extreme right’s relationship with democracy will allow for new insights into today’s public debates.

The Echo of Ancestors: The Reemergence and Claims of 'Ancient' Religions in Europe

This interdisciplinary workshop explores the revival of ancient religions in Europe, examining their resurgence, dissemination, institutional recognition, and sociopolitical impact. As non-monotheistic beliefs—polytheism, paganism, and animism—gain renewed interest and are increasingly leveraged in identity debates, this initiative brings together researchers from across Europe for a cross-disciplinary investigation of these evolving dynamics.
