Language, end of life, death and bereavement: an interdisciplinary perspective

Workhop - Languages and Language at the Crossroads of Disciplines (LLcD) conference

The workshop aims to initiate an interdisciplinary discussion by convening linguists along with scholars from other disciplines with an interest in language, such as philosophy or psychology, who share a common interest in end-of-life, death and bereavement issues. It will be informed by the following research questions: what are the linguistic representations of death and end of life? What are the similarities and differences between healthcare practitioners, patients and (bereaved) relatives in terms of their representation of death and end of life? To what extent can health care practitioners’ communication practices impact the process of bereavement? What linguistic resources can be put in place to avoid the silence that surrounds death-related topics?

Expressivity, Bodies and Language in the Twenty-First Century

This two-day event will consider all contributions addressing “in the flesh” effects and characteristics of language, highlighting the way bodies can be affected by – or pulled into – linguistic forms, whether negatively, positively, or else, with an eye to assessing in turn the impact of such bodily effects on decision-making and/or state of mind (Bottineau 2008). The sources of analysis need to be language-based (discourse of any genre or interactions of any kind) but the corpora can be found on a wide variety of media (online discourse, forums, interviews, fictional discourse, etc.).

    Learning How To Feel

Emotional Worlds of the Middle Ages

The history of emotions has emerged as one of the most prolific research topics in recent years. Building on our understanding of the cultural production of emotional expressions, we seek to explore how people in the Middle Ages learned about emotions, how they managed and manifested them. We aim to place special emphasis on the textual aspects of socialization towards specific emotions and their expressions across different contexts and communities of the medieval world.

    L’évaluation en traduction : qu’est-ce qu'une bonne/mauvaise traduction dans le nouveau contexte numérique ?

Evaluating translations is a multifaceted process crucial for ensuring linguistic accuracy and cultural relevance. It aims to assess the quality and effectiveness of translated content. High-quality translations facilitate effective communication fostering global relationships and understanding. Comprehensive analysis and comparison are involved to ensure that the translated text meets the desired standards of accuracy and fluency. On another side, various tools and methods can be employed to evaluate translations, ranging from automated software solutions to manual linguistic scrutiny or translation studies’ outcomes.

Cognitive Studies Approach to Theatrical Performance Analysis

Theatralia: Journal of Theatre Studies, vol. 28, no. 1

Approximately twenty years after Theatre Studies embraced the so-called "cognitive turn", Theatralia, a distinguished scholarly journal dedicated to the multidisciplinary study of theatre, once more invites submissions for an upcoming special issue focused on the application of cognitive approaches to theatre analysis. In 2016 Theatralia dedicated its special issue to the new trends in theatre theory development with the focus on the then young burgeoning field of cognitive approaches to theatre studies. This upcoming issue aims to explore how almost ten years later cognitive science methodologies and theories have deepened our understanding of theatrical phenomena, including but not limited to performance, reception, cognition, emotion, and embodiment. We welcome contributions from scholars and practitioners across various disciplines, including Theatre Studies, Cognitive Science, Psychology, Neuroscience, and beyond.

Liberty on parole? Challenges in interactivity

Journal “AN-ICON. Studies in Environmental Images”

The cfp, edited by Pietro Montani and Andrea Pinotti, is titled “Liberty on parole? Challenges in interactivity” and it's dedicated to the evolving forms of interactivity in the contemporary mediascapes, the issues it raises, as well as its limitations. To what extent does interactivity emancipate the user and redefines the roles both of producer and consumer? To what extent is interactivity outlined as yet another articulation of that inevitable observance of rules (Crary 1990) that marks by definition every relationship of the observer with the media with which he interacts? To what extent does the gained freedom remain a form of freedom conditioned by structural constraints, a liberty on parole?

“Imago Mundi”. Ein Überblick über Metaphern: Kreativität, Phraseologie und Diskurs

The guiding question of the conference will therefore be to try to specify the linguistic and conceptual functioning of the metaphor. More generally, the conference will welcome any contribution aimed at bringing out the relationships between metaphor and the three concepts in question: creativity, lexicalization and discourse. The analysis of metaphor can proceed from both a diachronic and synchronic perspective and address different types of corpora and texts. The conference will pay particular attention to the analysis of different types of discourse, in particular scientific, technological, media, tourism, advertising, political, legal, philosophical, historical, literary, artistic and educational/didactic discourse.

Empathy and the Aesthetics of Language

For three decades, the question of the role played by empathy in the aesthetic apprehension of language, and notably in the experience of literature, has been the topic of a growing number of studies. A joint project of the University of Parma, Aix-Marseille University and the University of Texas at Austin, this two-day webinar brings together thirteen experts – philosophers, literary theorists, neuroscientists, psychologists, historians – whose contributions will be published in two special issues of Texas Studies for Literature and Language (TSLL). Taken together, the talks proposed aim at offering an updated and encompassing discussion of recent, but also older research in the field. The webinar intends to address the question of empathy and the aesthetics of language from a cross-disciplinary and cross-methodological perspective, by giving room to both theoretical and empirical approaches and tackling the concept of empathy in all its semantic diversity.

    The Thinking of the Image

Interdisciplinary approaches to imagery and imagination

What shall we call an “image”? Is it that from which knowledge proceeds or that which anticipates knowledge? Is image something only able to be recognised as object of thinking or it shows per se, in its polysemy and equivocal constitution, a deep, still unexplored generative form of thinking? From the point of view of the understanding of the digital age, where we entered in, to a strong consideration of the new frontiers of science, knowledge, and philosophy and from here up to societal and cultural dimensions, the thinking of the image still remain an enigma. The aim of the international conference is, perhaps for the first time, to study and to explore in a genuine interdisciplinary approach the multiversal horizon of human imagery and, in particular its constructive, generative capacity of building a world-meaning.

    Memory, Place, and Material Culture
