  Contemporary African and Black Diasporic Spaces in Europe

  "Open Cultural Studies" journal

  This special issue of Open Cultural Studies explores the social and cultural spaces in which identifications with African and black diaspora(s) become articulated, (re)negotiated and established as a field of collective agency with transformative power in European societies. It will argue that  African diaspora communities and cultures in Europe are constructed not only by individuals’ engagements with Africa and its global diaspora, or mediatized and commercialized notions of Africanness/blackness, but also through collective agency aiming at promoting change in European societies shadowed by the normative whiteness, nationalist discourses and policies, human rights violations and overt racism.

  Geomedia and the City

  Geomedia is an emerging concept that has been deployed to capture a particular technological condition, associated with recent rapid developments in digital technology. As such, it signals to the dialectics of locative media and the mediations of localities. However, the concept of geomedia carries deeper/wider ontological and epistemological registers that transcend the simple twining of geography and media. In this wider sense, geomedia gestures to the expanding interdisciplinary terrain at the crossroads of media studies and geography, where various ontologies and epistemologies of space/time, flows/mobilities and mediation/ mediatization come together. The aim of this special issue is to explore the urban as a key terrain where these ontologies and epistemologies are articulated.

  1st PhD Workshop - European research program CAPA.CITY

  Within the framework of the research program CAPA.CITY, a PhD workshop is organized around the question of suburban retrofitting. The workshop will notably question the capacities that need to be mobilized and associated, or even hybridized, in order to transform existing residential subdivisions. The originality of this approach lies in the interrogation of creating negotiation spaces between individual, collective and common interests, so that collective capacities could be built between the different actors (inhabitants, professionals, institutions) implicated in the transformation of residential subdivisions.

  The congress aims to bring together researchers and scientists from different backgrounds intersecting with the social sciences revealing the visible and invisible networks. By fostering the exchange of knowledge and experiences in the study of the past, the congress expects to lay the framework for the present day science on which to map the future web of knowledge. This congress intends to meditate on science, and to understand how it is being constructed nowadays. Our focus is to approach questions such as: How do we do/communicate science, immediate science, open access, intellectual property, bioethics, cultural heritage, among others.

  Short-term tourism rentals: Observation, regulations and labor reconfigurations

  This international workshop aims to explore the breadth of the changes induced by the development of tourism short-term rental digital platforms from an interdisciplinary perspective. It intends to go beyond the debate regarding the competition between this new form of tourist accommodation and more traditional types of stakeholders (hotels, hostels, guesthouses, etc.). Instead, we aim to shed some light on the changes triggered by both the digital nature of this accommodation and its unseen flexibility and volatility, which challenge the definition of the “economic” sphere, the current regulation of economic activity and work, but also the methods used to measure it. Therefore, the workshop aims to analyse the breadth of these changes through (although not limited to) three entry points : the data issue, the regulation issue and the work issue.

  The Black Metropolis, between past and future

  Race, urban planning and African-American culture in Chicago

  The colloquium will celebrate the centenary of the “Great Migration” and explore the social and cultural life of Chicago South Side and West Side from the end of the Thirties, which were marked by the cultural zenith of Bronzeville neighborhood and a series of measures for the Black community inspired by the New Deal, to the present, which is characterized by numerous private and public initiatives in favor of an urban renewal. This international and multidisciplinary colloquium seeks to reevaluate the contribution of the South Side and the West Side to the definition and evolution of the African-American identity from the beginning of the XX^th Century until the contemporary moment.

  Cultivating, minimising and preventing: strategies for handling the risk-idiosyncrasies in agricultural production

  Workshop for the symposium "Coping with risks in agriculture. What challenges and prospects?"

  Agricultural activities are particularly risky for a variety of reasons. Firstly because they are mostly exposed to constant but unpredictable weather and climate changes. Secondly, demand and price-decision mechanism for agricultural products depend on a complex mix of state and market influences hardly susceptible by the individual farmer. And, thirdly, agricultural producers are by definition constantly creating new risks themselves through their economic activities of using biotic resources (plants, animals) which are re-produced in the process of production. The aim of the workshop is to stimulate the reflection on the topic of the Symposium by identifying, exploring, contextualising and historicising in exchange with the participants of the workshop the great variety of risks, their conceptualisation and their handling in the agricultural sector in the period from the second half of the XIX^th to the early XXI^th century.

  Sport tourism has become the fastest growing sector of the tourism industry and is still thriving. What's more, even if, mega events (Olympic Games, FIFA World Cups) or other largescale events (World Championships in some sports, major tennis tournaments, etc.) had been drawing attention for a long time, it now seems to be obvious that small-scale events carry diverse benefits for their host towns too. The cost of their organization is lower, the required facilities are less expensive to construct and also to maintain after the event, and these can then be used by the local residents.

  This panel - climate history - for 17^th International Conference of Historical Geographers in Warsaw aims to explore rapid and short-term socio-environmental consequences as well as long-term changes induced by adverse effects of extreme cold events (evidence of declining impact or increasing adaptability of societies). Proposed papers can address the social and economic dimensions of cold winter spells and intense frosts but also various environmental aspects related to agriculture, livestock farming, silviculture, forest resources exploitation and management and land-use evolution (without geographical limitation).

  These days communication and information are characterized by immediacy, speed, and interactivity. Facebook and Instagram accounts, YouTube channels, and blogs transmit a perpetual flow of information, shared videos, pictures, and other content which creates networks and incentivizes sharing in a constantly evolving language. Contemporary mass media therefore ensures that, today more than ever, people in African countries are at the same time autonomous producers and users of a debate, through partly traditional, partly innovative channels, about life in Africa and African communities’ identity, with a tale that travels across the borders of individual countries and the continent itself.

  Post-soviet diaspora(s) in Western Europe (1991-2017)

  Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, millions of former soviet citizens crossed the national borders in search of better lives in new countries, in what was the biggest migration tide since the end of World War II. These Post-Soviet migrants were diverse in origins, strategies and expectations. They often represented a challenge to the orthodox views of migration processes, since in most cases these flows could not be easily described and analysed following commonly accepted theoretical frameworks. Everybody seemed to be on the move: labour migrants, political refugees, cross-border traders, “tourists” planning to forget their return... and in a short period, they spread all over Western Europe.

  ERC GeoDiverCity International Workshop

  L'atelier international  "Théories et modèles de l'urbanisation" aura lieu les jeudi 12 et vendredi 13 octobre à Paris, avec des contributions (en anglais) d'économistes et de géographes comme Michael Storper, Michael Batty et Fulong Wu, et de modélisateurs des systèmes complexes venus de la physique ou de l'informatique comme Elsa Arcaute, Marc Barthélémy et Romain Reuillon. Leurs présentations seront discutées par une pléiade de spécialistes des villes et des systèmes complexes, afin d'évaluer les résultats de l'ERC GeoDiverCity et d'enrichir par de nouvelles propositions de futurs programmes de recherche. L'atelier se terminera par une table ronde animée par Eric Denis et Denise Pumain.

  5eme rencontre international du Réseau Européen d'Histoire de l'Architecture, à Tallinn, juin 2018

  This session aims to address, from a historical perspective, the relation between, on one side, architecture and the related disciplines, and on the other side, agriculture and rurality at large. We welcome proposals specifically mapping case studies concerned with large-scale agricultural development and/or colonization schemes conceived and (but not necessarily) implemented in Europe and beyond during modern times (late 18th-20th century), strongly connected to nation- and State-building processes, and to the modernization of the countryside. We are particularly interested in those examples which aimed to “make the difference” in both scale and numbers, entailing radical reshaping of previously uninhabited or sparsely populated areas into new, planned, “total” rural landscapes.

It provides funding to invite, from four to six weeks, international professors and senior researchers with a PhD, or equivalent, working in institutions of higher education and research, from all across the globe to come in France and enables them to carry out work in France (field enquiries, library work and archives).

  Recent ethical challenges in social network analysis (RECSNA17)

  The interdisciplinary workshop RECSNA17 (Paris, 5-6 December 2017) brings together academics from several fields of knowledge to further advance the ethical reflection in the face of new research challenges. Research on social networks raises formidable ethical issues that often fall outside existing regulations. New tools to collect, treat, store personal data expose both research participants and practitioners to specific risks. Issues surrounding political instrumentalization or economic takeover of scientific results transcend standard research concerns. Legal and social ramifications of studies on personal ties and human networks surface at an unprecedented pace.
