The Epoch of Space. State and new perspectives

The next 8th, 9th and 10th of April it will take place at the University of Santiago de Compostela the international conference "The Epoch of Space. State and New Perspectives", where researchers from around the world will meet to discuss the spatial turn of humanities. This interdisciplinary event will bring together geographers, philologists, historians, philosophers, and other interested disciplines to review the current state of spatial humanities, share different approaches, research methods and discuss their future.

Reclaim the suburbs

Which capacities for participatory approaches?

The point of departure of this CAPA.CITY autumnschool is that we need a new movement Reclaim the Suburbs that supports residents to organize themselves and initiate own retrofitting projects; projects that do reduce the societal costs of their mode of living, but also fit within their housing dream: garage-box entrepreneurs, multigenerational villa-collectives, eco-garden networks, crowdfunded community services or renewable energy cooperatives. The CAPA.CITY autumnschool will collect and discuss ongoing Reclaim the Suburb initiatives, with a focus on the capacities that collectives need to develop, in order to initiate, run and sustain such initiatives.

Thinking the city through work

Blurring boundaries of production and reproduction in the age of digital capitalism

This call for paper invites contributions that think the city through the lens of work. The digitisation of urban economies and everyday urban life makes the distinction between work, home and leisure increasingly difficult. When food delivery riders use their private bikes to work or hosts rent their home in order to make a living, the spatial separation of the domestic and the market, once seen as clear-cut, now seem to blur or at times, even disappear altogether. This special issue seeks to elucidate and discuss the increasing muddying of boundaries between spheres of production and reproduction in contemporary cities and invites scholars to further challenge and rethink the ways we conceptualise work in urban studies.

IdeAs – Ideas of the Americas, journal of the Institute of the Americas will publish its 15^th issue on Water Management in the Americas. The environmental dimension will be the backbone of this issue, either in its physical dimension (how do we quantify the risks and resources?) or in the approach of water-related social or political issues, taking into account the complex relationships between stakeholders at different scales. We welcome contributions from all disciplines within the spectrum of social sciences, from history, political science, international relations, economy to geography, sociology and anthropology, particularly regarding North America.

DARIAH Annual Event 2019: Humanities Data

The DARIAH Annual Event 2019 thematizes a catalogue of research questions that arise when we speak of Humanities Data. At the very heart of this topic linger questions around the type and amount of data that humanists collect: what kind of data do we have; where is it; and who owns it? Is our data indeed complex, and if so, what makes it complex? How do definitions and conceptualisations of the term ‘data’ resonate with or, perhaps more accurately, alienate us from our conceptions of our source landscape as art and humanities scholars? And, of course, how will the major European policy initiative to build an Open Science Cloud for research data impact upon our practices and opportunities? The upcoming DARIAH Annual Event 2019 combines forms of encounter developed in prior meetings, such as Working Groups meetings, workshops organised by Working Groups and projects, and a Marketplace to exchange ideas around new research projects and infrastructural solutions with an open conference setting.

You are invited to submit a short abstract to the 3rd International Land Use Symposium on Land use changes: Trends and projections, to be held December 4-6 2019, in Paris Diderot University. It will be preceded by a pre-symposium workshop on Urban Sprawl on December 3rd, 2019. The ILUS organizing committee welcomes the submission of original contributions with the goal of advancing our understanding of land use and land cover (LULC) changes. Submission may either fit focus themes or be on a white track.

Crossing French Metropolises: Exiled Artists and Intellectuals during the 20th century

Following “Arrival Cities: Migrating Artists and New Metropolitan Topographies”, the first conference of the ERC research project Relocating Modernism: Global Metropolises, Modern Art and Exile (METROMOD) held at the LMU Munich in November/December 2018, a workshop will be organized at the German Center for Art History (DFK Paris), on 4 July 2019. Building on common interests of the DFK Paris and METROMOD—such as movements of artists, ideas and productions—this workshop will focus on the temporary exile of artists and intellectuals in French cities throughout the twentieth century, which was marked by (e)migration waves. Located at the crossroads of disciplines such as Art History, Exile Studies, History of Sociology, Architecture and Urban Studies, this topic calls for a transdisciplinary approach.

The seminar will discuss the contribution of spatial big data and their relevance to urban studies. The day will be an opportunity to highlight the conclusions of the four-year interdisciplinary Bru-Net research project, which focused in particular on the case of Brussels (Bru-) through the prism of different types of interaction networks (-Net). What are the challenges about spatial big data today in urban studies? What are the advantages and the limits of these new data, in terms of thematic results and methodological aspects? Do these new spatialized data make it possible to better understand the structures and dynamics of cities with regard to mobility and transportation, infrastructure, and built-up features?

Future. Inventing the cities of tomorrow – 2019 Call for visiting professors

In link with the “Funds for Excellence” action, Université Paris-Est publishes a new call for applications aimed at bringing in first-class international researchers to contribute to the FUTURE project for an approximate share of 20% of their work time (a percentage that will vary between 15% to 25%, depending on the project in question) over a period of 3 years, via at least one research laboratory under the supervision of an I-SITE consortium institution.

Up to a certain point, the way we move to cities is the way we live cities. We choose our transportation based on the time, the safety of the way etc. From home to work or to the school, from work to a leisure activity, to visit a friend, regardless of where we are going, we always think about the best way to commute and get there. However, getting around the city is not a democratic act, yet. Living in the periphery is not the same as living in the city center, and such a distinction implies the time of travel, the costs and the supply of the types of transportation that we will have access to. On the other hand, and simultaneously, new forms of mobility emerge every day that are not always consensual in the urban context where they arise.

For centuries, the study of time was one of the main academic interests in the field of Humanities. However, in the second half of the 20^th century, most scholars and philosophers shifted their focus to the question of space. The interest in studying this in the field of the arts has increased significantly in recent years, and is especially noticeable in the case of literary creations.The growing influence of ecocriticism and geocriticism is especially noticeable in digital humanities. The bridges recently built between these fields are already proving to be productive, as they have led to the development of new tools, approaches, and methodologies, such as deep mapping techniques and the spatial humanities. How have the disciplines evolved in recent years? Do we need to redefine the key concepts regarding space and place? Has our relationship with territory changed? Have we produced new ways of inhabiting space?

Scaffolds – Open encounters with society, art and architecture

The symposium aims at creating a place for sharing and discussion on research in architecture and urbanism, artistic practice and studio pedagogy. It does so by reflecting upon epistemological and cognitive strategies and tools used in understanding and shaping our space, from the immediate human body and its extensions to the territory. As such, the symposium proposes to explore theoretical, practical and ethical connections that link our ways-of-knowing with the ways-of-doing to be desired for a common future. We encourage the participation of researchers, educators and practitioners from architecture and urbanism, the humanities, artistic research as well as philosophy, psychology and social sciences. The symposium is open to the participation and attendance of people from any field and academic discipline who might see their ideas overlap the proposed themes. Additionally, we encourage the participation of artists and researchers working on art-based research.
