Drawing on different historical and geographical contexts, academic literature has produced since the 1960sa rich lexicon in various languages to analyse the global phenomenon of the territorial diffusion of urbanization. Just to mention a few: périurbain, sprawl (Gottman, 1967), suburbia (Fishman, 1987), desakota (McGee, 1989), exurbia (Nelson, 1992), Città diffusa (Indovina, 1990), post-suburbs (Phelps and Wu, 2011), Zwischenstadt (Sieverts, 2004). The reason of this prolific and bourgeoning literature in the field of urbanstudies is that the territorial diffusion of urbanization leads to reconsider the relationship between urbanismand territories. This workshop aims to examine this lexicon with the purpose of questioning the conceptual, disciplinary, and methodological frameworks that have oriented knowledge production on urbanization processesing different contexts and historical moments.

Topical Issue of "Open Economics" Journal
This topical issue of Open Economics invites submissions that explore both qualitatively and quantitatively how various cities have developed into global hubs of economic activity both historically and contemporaneously. The theoretical and methodological focus of this issue is the application of comparative methods for the purpose of analyzing economic systems in terms that go beyond neo-classical assumptions of economic theory found in conventional macro and micro economics. This also connects to the scholarly discourse on the varieties of capitalism or modernity as a perspective expected to be instructive for considering the preconditions for and effects of the rise of global financial and economic centers, such as London, New York and Hong Kong historically and Singapore, Tokyo and Shanghai more recently.

Public Space Democracy (PublicDemoS)
International Study group on Artistic Expressions and Aesthetic Styles in Public Space
Art as a defined set of practices participates to the agonistic dimension of the public sphere, challenges dominant norms and becomes part of controversies. We privilege in our approach the materiality of the public space, artistic expressions, styles as a way of making society, and a mode of translating and transforming the cultural conflicts. In multicultural contexts the norms of public space are unsettled by the appearance of new actors, visibility of differences that change power relations. Public practices such as codes of civility, clothing and language challenge the cultural norms, common sense and established conventions of the national public space and calls for a new “partage du sensible” (Jacques Rancière).

Writing the city [into the urban]
In the aftermath of the May 1968 uprising in Paris, Henri Lefebvre published in 1970 his classic treatise La Révolution Urbaine where he pointedly placed the urban in the centre of this revolution, identifying a theoretical need for the concept of the urban as a planetary possibility, one he considered more appropriate than a redundant notion of the city as a social scientific object. This workshop is a step in this direction where, coming 50 years after the backlash of ’68, this event aims to establish a conversation between the city and the urban by drawing on the notion of "ethnographic theorisation" where the theoretical potential of the urban can be harnessed from ethnographic insights of the city. It explores contingent ways in which the city can be written into the urban through manoeuvres that engage with the process of writing the city across disciplines from literary cultures to urban studies

Innovative mobility and urban design. Mirroring contemporary metropolises
The symposium is an invitation addressed to both new and established researchers, as well as experts from both the private or public spheres, who seek to rethink - or even revolutionize - mobility as a societal problem and/or practice, as well as its relation to metropolitan territories and places, through fields of knowledge and action as varied as architecture, engineering, geography, new technologies, and others. The underlying premise of this event is that a new inter-disciplinary, inter-cultural and inter-stakeholder dialogue is necessary in order to respond effectively to the urban mobility issues put forward by the three pillars (social, political and cultural) of sustainable development. How to combine the growing necessity and desire for speed in travel, with the imperative of reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gases? At the same time, how to achieve better quality public space dedicated to or crossed by mobility? How to ensure that the mobility of people, whether undergone or chosen, is part of a municipal and societal project that is acceptable and sustainable?

Diffuse Cities & Urbanization Network (DCUN)
Séminaires du Réseau international de recherche sur les villes et l’urbanisation diffuses
The international research network “Diffuse Cities and Urbanization” (DUCN) launches a regular research seminar. Its objective is to address the debates surrounding the contemporary worldwide diffusion of urbanization, in order to contribute to the production of new epistemologies of the urban in a global and comparative perspective. Not only the territorial diffusion of urbanization poses major challenges in terms of governance, but it also offers an intriguing research object which stimulates the production of ‘new geographies of urban knowledge’...

Fachtagung - Neuere und Zeitgeschichte
International Study Group on Spatial Dimensions of Public Memory
The public space is not an empty neutral place, nor it is devoid of power relations. It is deeply imbued with regulation of social space, layers of memory, offering a scene for present day politics, but also an historical archive with different temporalities, inhabitants, monuments and events. Can physical space contribute to creating commonalities and linkage points between different publics? Or does the space, as a marker of identity and power politics become an obstacle for cultural sharing and society making? The claims over meaning and ownership of public space opening up a battlefield over its competing interpretations and contested memories will be discussed as part of global democratic agendas.

Comparing property markets on an international scale
While many scholars compare property markets from the same urban area or compare the way these markets distinguish urban areas within a given country, very few propose an international comparison. And yet, this is a main scientific issue. Such comparisons would provide a new angle for studying metropolitan development as well as its internal trends relating to inequality and gentrification.

Multi-ethnic cities in the Mediterranean world
History, culture, heritage
This meeting aims to foster a discussion about the continuities and disruptions which have conditioned the multi-ethnic dimension of Mediterranean cities. We would like to focus on the specificities of places and time in our millennial history that have produced both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. We would like to broaden the traditional horizons of our disciplines under the issues of our times, questioning the role of historical research and the forms of scientific communication nowadays, when old practices seem more challenged than ever by the overwhelming expansion of new technologies.

No country for anthropologists?
Contemporary ethnographic research in the Middle East
Many parts of the contemporary Middle East are confronted with war, sectarianism, transnational interferences, uprisings, and a comeback of authoritarian regimes. This brings about various difficulties for ethnographic research as a practice of knowledge production based on the immersion of researchers in given social contexts and the subsequent writing up and publishing of texts. The international conference No country for anthropologists? Contemporary ethnographic research in the Middle East explores the obstacles to do ethnography in the Middle East and take them as the starting point for reflection upon the role of anthropology with a view to the Middle East of today.

Inequality and uncertainty: current challenges for cities
III Mid-Term Conference Of The Urban Sociology Research Network 37 Of European Sociological Association In Madrid (Spain), Uned
It is not possible to ignore the fact that cities are not only moving, vibrant and flourishing spaces, promising hope for better quality of life, but also accumulate and reflect significant problems. We need to recognise the complexity of economic, political, social, cultural and environmental mechanisms, which strengthen existing inequalities and add a great deal of uncertainty to life in cities and urban spaces of the globalised world. We want to gain a better understanding of the impact and consequences of inequality and uncertainty on the urban arena as much as the responses to current challenges in terms of both informal and institutional practices.

Home as a place for anti-Jewish persecution in European cities, 1933-1945
Anti-Jewish persecution didn’t only happen in specifically designed or transformed spaces such as camps and ghettos. It invaded spaces of everyday life in European cities: public spaces, work places and private spaces such as homes. In this landscape not only Jews and agents of persecution appear but also their immediate residential environment: concierges, neighbors, nannies, landlords, property managers, sub-tenants, local administrations, etc. These figures have an essential place in the memories of Jewish survivors. Though, so far, scholars have hardly addressed their role. The spatial turn that occurred during the last fifteen years in Anglophone Holocaust studies focused on the symbolic places of genocide. It mostly neglected apartment blocks and ordinary cities as spaces of persecution. This conference thus intends to focus on urban housing as a place for anti-Jewish persecution.

Modernism, modernisation and the rural landscape
MODSCAPES_conference2018
The impact of the Modern Movement and modernisation processes on rural landscapes in Europe and beyond is a widespread but little known, recognised or understood phenomenon which still exerts effects today. Within the third joint research programme of HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area) dedicated to “The uses of the past” which started in 2016, this subject is now being studied through several lenses within the MODSCAPES project. MODSCAPES welcomes proposals (full sessions, papers, trainnig/workshop) to its mid-event event, an international conference dedicated to Modernism, modernisation and the rural landscape.
