James Zebedee, the "translatio" and the Jacobean pilgrimages

    7th International Colloquium Compostela

The 7th International Colloquium Compostela aims at analysing the myth of the "translatio" of the body of Saint James from Palestina to Santiago de Compostela and its impact in the historical construction of the Jacobean pilgrimages.  As in the former editions, focusing on an interdisciplinary approach, the Colloquium analyzes the state of the art in the archeological research of Palestinian and Compostela in the early centuries, the studies about the traditions of the translatio, the iconography and the literary and social impact of the "translatio" and the current reality of pilgrimages to Compostella.

The Architecture of Southeast Asian Cities

How do Architectural and Urban Expressions of Modernity relate to Heritage ?

The conference is organised by the Contemporary Asian Architecture and Cities: Heritage and Projects research group, based in Paris. The conference will take place June 12-14 2013 at the National Superior Architecture School of Paris-Belleville (ENSAPB). The conference will deal with recent physical transformations and developments of Southeast Asian cities. Contemporary debates in urban studies often centre around the idea of a uniform kind of globalizing urbanization which is spreading worldwide. The conference will examine this idea as a hypothesis in light of the history of each city, the persistence of ancient urban morphologies, and heritage policies promoted by various Southeast Asian nations.

    20th International Conference of Europeanists

In order to propose a session (for the 20th International Conference of Europeanists on the theme "Crisis and Contingency: States of (In)stability", that will take place in Amsterdam, on June 25-27 2013, it is called for papers that deal with the problematics of the EU immigration and asylum policy. We can wonder whether the measures that are adopted on immigration and asylum issues comply with international and European legal instruments of human rights protection, as interpreted by the ECJ and the European Court of Human Rights. The context is appropriate for such an analysisThe Lisbon Treaty consolidates the scope of such juridical instruments, and reinforces the control the ECJ develops on the EU norms pertaining to the Area of freedom, security, and justice, particularly the norms dealing with immigration and asylum matters.

Dealer, collector, critic, publisher…: The « animateur d’art » and his multiples roles

Pluridisciplinary research of these disregarded cultural mediators of the 19th and 20th centuries

The first goal of our symposium is to enlighten the role of the animateur d’art in the development of the arts. We hope that this scientific gathering would help us specify this first formula of the cultural actor: “The animateur d’art is an amateur who actively participates in the defense of the arts and in the stimulation of the artistic creation in a certain period. He puts his numerous networks to work in order to spread ideologies and aesthetics through the cultural environment and the society. He is a key figure positioning himself as a mediator between the different art worlds – the plastic arts as well as between the different agents of the cultural environment. His work consists in building bridges between the artists and his own cultural environment in order to ease the reception of the works and to promote a peculiar aesthetics”.

Risk and disaster in health and medicine

Call for papers on all aspects of risk and disaster in the history of health and medicine, including its changing definition and the movement towards its quantification, covering epidemics, infectious and chronic disease, injuries and mental health. The articulation between personal risk, diagnosis and prognosis throughout history and health risks affecting communities of all sizes is, we believe, a key issue. We encourage contributions treating national and chronological differences and shifts in the definitions, perceptions and representation of risks and dangers, considered globally and according to race and ethnicity, gender, class, and professional status.

Toward the Europeanization of Digital Powers. The Role of Digital Technologies in the European Integration

The Euroacademia Convention of European Studies "Naming the Crisis of Europe and Assessing its Impact" aims to address the ongoing challenges, to map the current state of reflection on the topic of the European crisis and to look at available scenarios for the future of Europe. No other field than European Studies has a larger portfolio of available disciplinary instruments, models and paradigms that are expected to provide answers to unfolding realities. If no single disciplinary trend can provide neither sufficient explanations of the ongoing events nor reasonable predictions, a dialogue between schools, trends, paradigms and models in European Studies could forward a mosaic of alternatives for reflection at hand.

    Bodily Cultivation & Cultural Learning

8th International Symposium of CORPUS (International Group for the Cultural Study of the Body)

Almost all cultures recognize as a means of achieving religious or spiritual goals, cultivating moral and emotional virtue, or transforming ideas into bodily practices. Some of the most common examples include fasting, meditation, vegetarianism, and qigong or taichi. Rather than focus on these obvious examples, conference attendees will examine culturally driven bodily practices such as proper ways to walk, sit, and gesture—all of which are often endowed with rich cultural meaning, information about cultural learning, and knowledge about the cultivation of values and merit. Bodily cultivation can also be analyzed as a channel for learning, manifesting, developing, or shaping cultural concepts and ideals.

Quebec in the 1960s : Opening to the World

During 1960s, Quebec opens to the world. Both at the political, economic, social and cultural levels, Quebec tries to create, and in some cases, to recreate links with the outside world in a way to accelerate its process of modernization. The group of research GRIQUERE (2005) wishes to review the subject by organizing a colloquium aiming, on one hand, to report recent progress in the knowledge at this level and on the other hand, to identify the fields which were neglected up to here to direct the future researches.

Transforming South-East Asian Cities: a View from the Grassroots

7th EuroSEAS Conference – 7th groupe "Environment, cities and housing", panel 72

Based on empirical approaches, the aim of this panel is to analyze contemporary urban dynamics at the local scale in Southeast Asian cities. In particular we will address mechanisms of urban change, as they can be seen at the neighborhood level. With the ongoing transformations, both in city centers and in the peripheries, are there new forms of urban practices, of resistance? What is the role of the people at the grassroots in such transformations? These interactions can be read from such scales as the home, the street and the neighborhood. From this viewpoint, how can we consider urban oppositional processes, for instance a formal sector to an informal one, public actors to private ones, the authorities to citizens?

    Accidents and Emergencies

Risk, Welfare and Safety in Europe and North America, c. 1750-2000

The aim of this conference is to take stock of the present by focusing on modern Europe and North America from roughly 1750 onwards. It welcomes historians from all sub-fields (social, medical, cultural, etc.), scholars from other disciplines such as sociology and cultural studies. Risk, welfare and safety have long been sites of historical inquiry. This conference takes this literature as its point of departure, and encourages both general and trans-national appraisals of the history and nature of modern "risk societies", as well as accounts which focus on particular technologies, practices and discourses. In sum, the aim of "Accidents and Emergencies" is to: rethink the history of risk, welfare and safety; encourage a more integrated approach to their empirical study and conceptualisation; open up new historical and sociological perspectives through which we might better grasp the present.

    Governing the Sustainable Development

Evolution of Environmental Administrations in Europe and United States

In 2007 a new French “Ministry for sustainable development” was created, a "super Ministry" which houses the functions of the former Ministries of Environment, Energy, Housing, and Transport under one single roof. This merger applies to all levels of government, with the creation of large regional services for sustainable development. This mode of reform does not seem to be specific to the French case. At first glance, it echoes the concerns for more coordination and integration which have been already observed in several other countries including Germany and the United Kingdom. This workshop aims to compare different national situations regarding environmental administrations and their impact on public policies.
