This special issue of History of Communism in Europe seeks to explore these paradoxes of marginality under socialist regimes. We invite contributions that examine how marginal, liminal, and unfit groups or individuals were constructed, controlled, resisted, and reimagined across different socialist contexts. By focusing on the outskirts of socialist societies, we aim to advance comparative insights into the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion, domination and resistance, conformity and transgression.

Les recherches sur la longue histoire des luttes pour les droits des femmes d’Afrique au cours du XX^e siècle sont particulièrement foisonnantes. Toutefois, la littérature sur l’activisme des militantes africaines à l’échelle mondiale, ainsi que sur la manière dont leurs idées et leurs pratiques ont contribué à l’émergence des mouvements féministes internationaux, reste limitée. Cette journée d’étude, organisée par une équipe internationale, vise à encourager des collaborations afin de mettre l’accent sur les militantes africaines et leurs connexions globales.

A mulher no teatro até ao século XIX

Desde a sua origem que a História do Teatro tem sido feita por nomes masculinos. No entanto, é impensável que as mulheres não tenham tido também um papel importante nesta construção. Além de existirem enquanto personagens, os seus contributos enquanto intérpretes, dramaturgas, compositoras, empresárias, mecenas, cenógrafas ou figurinistas, entre um vasto conjunto de outras funções, foram fundamentais para o desenvolvimento da prática teatral. Este colóquio pretende recuperar o lugar da mulher no teatro desde a sua origem até ao século XIX no mundo, abarcando um largo leque de temas, que tenham como centro a mulher, seja como foco de um espetáculo ou como marginal, como vedeta ou figura terciária, como parte do público ou como produtora do objeto cultural. O colóquio pretende proporcionar um debate abrangente e transdisciplinar de forma a redescobrir o lugar da mulher no teatro numa abordagem global e histórica.

Since several decades, historians and sociologists of science scrutinize the history of science as a practice. References demonstrate, first, the relevance of investigating who are the writers of disciplinary histories and what are the uses of these histories and, second, archaeologists’ concern to this regard. This session organised by the “History of Archaeology” commission is intended to strengthen these studies from the case of archaeology.

This call for papers invites proposals for an issue entitled ‘Generic Boundaries in South African Literature: a Revaluation’ which will aim to examine what is at stake in the distinction between fiction and non-fiction, but also, more generally, in the fluidity of boundaries between genres in South African literature. We invite contributions on South African literary works which show an awareness of the shifting boundaries between fiction and nonfiction (true crime, new journalism…), but also, possibly, between prose and poetry or between realism and fantasy.

Perspectives on Women’s Autobiographies from Africa and the Diaspora

This international conference aims to examine the autobiographies of women from Africa (during colonial and post-colonial periods) and the Diaspora to shed light on the meaning and significance of the various messages conveyed through those texts. Although there is an abundance of autobiographical texts by these women, many remain unknown to the general public. From that angle, the conference is positioned as a real prospect to further bring those half- veiled writings to public's attention. As such, the conference intends to bring together scholars, researchers, experts and doctoral students, in human and social sciences, as well as in languages and arts, affiliated to universities, research centers, NGOs and civil societies in Africa and around the world. Their objective is to present and discuss women's autobiographical writings from Africa and the Diaspora from a multidisciplinary perpective.

Transnational Biographies. Destinies at the Crossroads throughout the 20th Century

This call for papers seeks methodological and case-study perspectives on 20^th century biographies, interpreted within a framework of cross-national/transnational connections, surpassing the nation-centered apprehension of history. The contributions should acknowledge and interpret destinies and existences as subjected to transnational spaces and structures, while considering actors as non-state (or multi-state) entities. Moreover, we seek contributions that surpass the “center-periphery” paradigm, focusing on a “horizontal” approach, while also reversing the spotlight from diplomatic and political history towards the social and cultural dimension of it. Editors welcome contributions from different fields of research: history, political science, cultural studies, philosophy, sociology, gender studies or any other related areas of interest.

We would like to welcome contributors from a wide variety of research fields in order to discuss issues related to social, cultural and collective memory. One of the sessions will focus on migrations and diasporic experiences, in particular on family memories. The second session is about intergenerational transmission in families in contexts of mass violence, slavery or war.

À l’heure des élections européennes, un colloque international se tient à Angers sur un sujet qui porte sur l’histoire de l’action humanitaire à l’échelle de l’Europe, à partir de la première guerre mondiale jusqu’à aujourd’hui avec l’investissement de l’Union européenne dans l’aide humanitaire. Le colloque pluridisciplinaire, Intégrer le genre à l’histoire de l’aide humanitaire, interroge l’action humanitaire au prisme des questions du genre. Il s’agit de comprendre en quoi le genre a pu avoir un impact sur le travail humanitaire et en quoi l’absence de prise en compte du genre a pu se répercuter sur les actions de terrain.

Midterm conference of the Research Network “Sociology of Migration” of the European Sociological Association

Les discours politiques et médiatiques actuels sur les questions d’« intégration », d’« appartenance » et de « frontières » sont dominés par les points de vue des États-nations occidentaux. L'objectif de cette conférence mi-parcours du réseau de recherche 35 « Sociologie des migrations » de l’Association européenne de sociologie (ESA) est de recentrer le débat sur le point de vue des personnes qui sont désignées et abordées dans ces discussions, et qui deviennent la cible de politiques frontalières et de mobilité de plus en plus complexes et différenciées. En d’autres termes, cette conférence réinterrogera la manière dont les appartenances et les frontières sont actuellement remises en cause et transformées à divers niveaux (local, national, international), et dont l’approche biographique dans l’étude des migrations peut apporter un nouvel éclairage sur ces processus.

Geoarchaeology, defined as the application of geosciences and geographical methods to prehistory, archaeology, and history, is now widely applied to study key subjects such as occupation patterns, territory and site exploitation, palaeoclimatic, palaeoenvironemental, and palaeogeographical changes, as well as anthropogenic impacts and system responses. The multidisciplinary and multiscalar dimensions of geoarchaeological approaches have encouraged continuous development and innovation of methods and approaches that have opened new possibilities for explorations in geographical sectors previously inaccessible, the development of large-scale data acquisitions and treatment, and also the development of microscopic scale analysis precision. This session will highlight global research in geoarchaeology with particular emphasis on innovative methods or cutting edge research using established approaches.

Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Philological Encounters

The conference brings together scholars from various regions and disciplines (including Arabic, Turkish, Hebrew, Sanskrit, as well as European languages) to explore the personal (and especially self-reflective) dimensions of academic knowledge production by studying scholars (i.e., producers) and their contexts (i.e., institutions and societies) in relation to their objects of study. The conference outlines an avenue of research dedicated to the study of tensions, antagonisms and polemics - as well as fascination, cooperation, appropriation and friendship - that transpired as a consequence of the meetings of different scholars and their dissimilar modes of textual scholarship, made possible through international cooperation in the form of conferences, journals, academic associations and student exchange.
