Actors and Vehicles of Architectural Criticism

Architectural Criticism 20th and 21st Centuries, a Cartography

This second international workshop takes into consideration the actors and the vehicles of criticism: with these terms it refers to both the agents of criticism (critics, architects, historians, publishers, photographers, institutions, etc.) and the media through which criticism is disseminated (press, photography, exhibitions, etc.). The workshop aims to expand the knowledge about the specific functions of these actors and their networks and to outline their mutual relationships. The four sessions investigate the links between the actors, the media of criticism, and the historical contexts within which they materialize, as well as the cultural, intellectual, and institutional milieus from which they originate.

“Medicalized” Childbirth as a Public Problem

Risk Culture(s), Gender Politics, Techno-Reflexivities

Obstetrical knowledge, technologies and practices have dramatically transformed women’s reproductive experiences worldwide. Medicalization of childbirth was accelerated in the XX^th century by the displacement of childbirth from home to the hospital, and by the generalization of surgical techniques and pharmaceutical products. Medical interventionism took multiple, situated forms. Relying on cross-cultural investigations and field data from diverse national contexts (France, USA, Italy, Brazil, Senegal, Turkey, Switzerland, Canada…), this international workshop investigates how “technological” birth came into being, and how it is produced, problematized, framed, and negotiated in the XXI^st century.

Transnational itineraries, dialogues and programmes

This conference will discuss the transnational and connected history of student engagements in colonial liberations and the critical reflection on the multilateral management of conflicts in the postcolonial period. It will investigate internal and external tensions, and the reorganisation of these movements in relation to pacifism, revolutionary struggle, conflict prevention and peace making. It will also consider the impact of the new multilateral management of conflicts (through the United Nations, but also the European Union) on European and North American societies, including on young people and student movements, whose membership often goes far beyond national spheres.

Society, culture, community in the United Kingdom (1970-79)

This two-day conference focusing on British society of the 1970s seeks to enlarge and to alter perspectives on the period. The intention is to examine the dynamic of contradiction, inventiveness and tensions that is at work. The intention of the conference-organizers is to circumvent and thus question any “teleological” or linear reading of the period in terms of the necessary “coming of Thatcherism” in the United Kingdom, where the politics and culture of the period are read as so many symptoms or omens of the 1979 election result. The aim is to focus on the plurality of conflicting possibilities evident in the period, and therefore on the contingency of outcomes.

An element that seems to characterize the 20^thcentury reflection on utopia is its secular nature. Through a re-thinking of the place and roles of religion in society, the post-secular turn we are witnessing in recent theory (Habermas, Taylor, Asad, Mahmood) may provide a critical point of departure for questioning this specific aspect of utopian tradition. In this panel, we invite papers that reflect on the relationship between utopia and religion, as it is worked out in 20^thcentury literature and philosophy: How does the place of the utopian tradition change in the context of the “return of the religion” in a post-secular society?

Women and political activism against Latin American dictatorships

“Orda” journal

The main objective of this issue is to gather works of researchers from different countries, diverse fields of knowledge and several theoretical as well as methodological perspectives, so as to feed the debate on the issues in keeping with female participation during the dictatorships of Latin America. Contributions should tackle the subject of women activists but they may also consider in a less strict sense the link between women and activism. We wish to address the issue of activism in a broad sense to include a wide range of social movements in which women have played a significant role.

In this year marking the 170^th anniversary of Carl Fabergé, the museum dedicated its annual academic conference to Carl Fabergé, his firm's activities in Russia and abroad, its place within Russian culture as well as to Fabergé's influence on modern and contemporary jeweler’s art.

Global Internet Governance as a Diplomacy Issue

The First European Multidisciplinary Conference on Global Internet Governance – Actors, Regulations, Transactions and Strategies (GIG-ARTS 2017)

“Digital diplomacy” has recently been the subject of significant debates, events and activities at a variety of governance sites. The concept is often used without having been clearly defined and delimited. For some, it is restricted to the use of digital means, especially social networks, by diplomats to practice a kind of “Public Diplomacy 2.0”. In others’ views, it extends to foreign affairs and international relations with regard to all matters related to the digital environment, including internet governance. There is undoubtedly a need to better understand recent transformations of diplomacy in the digital era, their drivers and their nature, whether and how they might change European and transnational power relations and, ultimately, which values they carry and channel on the global scene.

Copyright and the Circulation of Knowledge

Industry Practices and Public Interests in Great Britain from the 18th Century to the Present

New combinations of technology, culture, and business practice are transforming relationships among authors, publishers, and audiences in many fields of knowledge, including journalism, science research, and academia. Self-publishing, open-access, open source, creative commons, crowd sourcing and copy left: these are a few of the key words associated with recent changes in how knowledge is produced and circulated. While being celebrated for their potential to democratize knowledge, many of these changes have been accompanied by heated debates on such questions as the appropriate role of experts and ‘gatekeepers’; how to ensure that such projects are both trustworthy and economically viable; and how best to balance the interests of authors, publishers, and the general public. Copyright is often at the centre of these discussions.

Orient oder Rom?

Prehistory, history and reception of a historiographical myth (1880Ð1930)

Today the question “Orient oder Rom?” is no longer a topical issue in medieval art history, although a persuasive answer has never been formulated. One of the reasons for this oblivion deals with the controversial figure of Josef Strzygowski, who in 1901 published about the question his pivotal volume, nowadays discredited for its racial and proto-nazi judgement.However, the question “Orient oder Rom?” concerns not only with Josef Strzygowski: the prodromes of this critical concepts goes back to the nineteenth century, when the Russian, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires fought to control territories. The conference aims to distance from the sole Strzygowski’s perspective and to comprehend and rewrite the story of a pivotal concept for both art historiography and cultural identity.

Quels citoyens pour l'empire ?

La citoyenneté française à l'épreuve de la colonisation dans la première moitié du XXe siècle

Les dimensions impériales de la citoyenneté française sont à la fois bien et mal connues. Des travaux récents ont rappelé que la césure entre citoyens et sujets s’est construite de façon progressive et par ajustements entre les enjeux de pouvoir à l’échelle locale et impériale, les logiques juridiques et les revendications portées par des acteurs mus par des intérêts différents, sinon contradictoires. La multiplication des recherches d’histoire sociale, politique et culturelle de la colonisation permet désormais d’écrire une histoire plurivoque des dimensions impériales de la citoyenneté française en se demandant comment tous ces acteurs formulent la question qui sert de titre au colloque « quels citoyens pour l’empire ? » et quelles réponses ils lui apportent, ou comment ils font en sorte d’empêcher qu’elle soit débattue.

Crossing Borders: Intellectuals of the Right and Politics in Europe and Latin America

Transnational Perspectives

During the interwar period, authoritarian movements and regimes of the right - both of the "old" authoritarian and of the "new" radical varieties - professed their faith in national values but at the same time saw themselves as national agents of an otherwise international intellectual and political wave. Starting from the mid-1920s, a growing sense of shared goals, commonality of vision, and sense of history-making mission led them to draw on each other for inspiration and support. It soon became clear that these movements and regimes embraced ideas from each other, actively studying each other’s discourses and initiatives in the political field. The conference aims to promote a different understanding of the role of intellectuals of the interwar right who perceived themselves as transnational agents “at the service of an idea”.
