  European Solidarity with Chile, 1970-1990

  During the Cold War, Western Europe witnessed the emergence of various social movements with an orientation to Latin America. One of the most important mobilizations for Latin America was without any doubt the movement in solidarity with Chile, which already emerged in support for the Allende government (1970-1973) but especially gained strength after the military coup of 1973. Indeed, the overthrew of the Unidad Popular government in September 1973 and the subsequent repression by the Chilean military dictatorship inspired a wave of protest and solidarity in Western Europe, which lasted until the end of the regime of Pinochet in 1990. Support for the Chilean resistance and for the many refugees which had crossed the ocean was concretized in the establishment of hundreds of Chile solidarity committees across Western Europe and in the action of a variety of other organizations, including trade unions, church groups and NGO’s. The Chilean political opposition and refugees played an active role in this solidarity, although internal political tension proved to be an important obstacle for the Western European solidarity movements.

  Chaires croisées IRD, appel à projets 2010

  Le programme Chaires croisées a été instauré en 2007 afin de promouvoir des démarches scientifiques d’excellence dans le domaine de la recherche pour le développement. Une chaire croisée réunit deux chercheurs ou enseignants-chercheurs confirmés, l’un du Nord, l’autre du Sud. Le « croisement » n’implique pas un échange de postes mais un échange d’idées et d’activités autour d’un projet de recherche et de formation commun élaboré en partenariat avec une unité de recherche de l’IRD. La durée du financement est d’un an, renouvelable une fois.

  From debt to over-indebtedness in southern countries: Processes, practices and meanings

  International Workshop, Paris-IEDES, 7-8 december 09

  Organized by UMR 201, RUME India, Mexico, Madagascar, CIESAS (Mexico) (www.rume-rural-microfinance.org). The main purpose of this interdisciplinary workshop will be a theoretical and empirical examination of over-indebtedness from the perspective of southern countries, with the following underlying hypothesis: to define and analyze the process of indebtedness requires first an understanding of the complexity and diversity of debt relationships. The following questions might be addressed: 1) The social meaning of debt, creditworthiness and over-indebtedness. 2) Financial ‘markets’ and financial providers. 3) Financial culture. 4) Impoverishment and accumulation. 5) Over-indebtedness.
