Regions of Memory

A comparative perspective on Eastern Europe

Vis-à-vis the lasting memory boom now emerging as a global trend, we are asking then about regionally specific memory processes and research upon them in different parts of the globe. We welcome papers that answer one or more of the following questions: What kind of memory of mass violence accounts for regional specificity? What are the genealogies of collective and individual memories and forgetting related to mass violence in various regions? How and why do these images, narratives, and practices change and evolve? How do they influence the contemporary identity of a given region? And finally, how do scholars describe and interpret them? Do their concepts, categories and approaches follow the established Western patterns of memory studies?

La médecine de cour : personnel de santé et politiques sanitaires en Europe, XVe-XVIIIe siècle

Court medical practitioners changed in numbers, occupations and functions during the Renaissance and early modern period (15c-18c) practitioners focused on different specialities within body-care, and took on different roles in the government of Europe’s states. Building on recent work that has concentrated on the history of body care at courts, this workshop will explores changes in court medical politics, practices and practitioners and the consequences they had for, firstly, medical thought, regulation and practice and, secondly, the activities, management and evolution of early modern states.

Dans le cadre d’un partenariat entre la Gerda Henkel Stiftung, et le laboratoire d’excellence sur les études méditerranéennes, coordonné par la Maison méditerranéenne des sciences de l’homme (Aix-en-Provence), une bourse post-doctorale de type incoming sera attribuée en octobre 2012, pour une durée de 12 mois, à un jeune chercheur. / In the framework of the partnership between the Gerda Henkel Stiftung and the Laboratory of Excellence for Mediterranean Studies, coordinated by the Maison Méditerranéenne des Sciences de l’Homme (Aix‐en‐Provence), will allocate an incoming post-doctoral grant in October 2012, for a duration of twelve months, to a young researcher.

L’efficacité policière est devenue un enjeu politique et électoral majeur dans les démocraties en proie à l’inquiétude sécuritaire. Placées sous l’œil attentif des médias, les autorités policière et politique, soucieuses de faire la preuve de leur capacité à assurer le maintien de l’ordre, se retrouvent au cœur d’une logique d’image et d’enjeux de communication permanents. L’objectif de ce colloque est de contribuer à renouveler la réflexion sur les relations entre les sphères policière et médiatique.

La thématique générale tourne autour des révolutions britanniques et de la manière dont les chercheurs français se sont saisis de cette question, dans les domaines de la philosophie politique, de l'histoire des sciences et du genre et de l'histoire sociale. Des discutants anglais et français viendront commenter ces effets de divergences et de convergence observés de part et d'autre de la Manche.

Alter, Société européenne de recherche sur le handicap a pour objectif de promouvoir la recherche en sciences humaines et sociales sur le handicap, en insistant sur la pluralité des approches scientifiques et des savoirs. Cette première rencontre vise à offrir aux chercheurs confirmés, jeunes chercheurs et doctorants un panorama des thématiques, problématiques et approches qui renouvellent aujourd’hui la recherche en sciences sociales dans ce domaine ainsi qu’un lieu propice aux contacts et aux échanges. Elle accueillera des chercheurs provenant de différentes disciplines (sociologie, anthropologie, sciences politiques, philosophie, sciences de l'éducation...) et de différentes régions du monde (Europe, Amérique du Nord et du Sud, Asie).

Contestation et participation dans le monde anglophone

The dissent and uprisings that spread through the Arab world during the Spring of 2011 occurred almost a quarter of a century after the fall of East European political régimes that saw the rise of "democracy" modeled on the Anglo-American representative system. This specific context which has come to characterize the past quarter of century calls for a renewed analysis of the models these political systems represent and of the processes that triggered them and led to their long-term establishment in the UK and the US.Since the 1990s, as a response to the story of the inevitable emergence of democracy in the aftermath of the Cold War, researchers on North American politics have provided an alternative reading of events: that of a "contested democracy".

Recueil d'essais sur le Professor Challenger de Conan Doyle

Habitually characterised as a late-appearing variant upon the Victorian Quest Romance, The Lost World in fact marked the beginning of Arthur Conan Doyle’s prolonged investigation of science, ideology and belief under the inhibiting constraints of early twentieth-century modernity. The narratives span from 1912 to 1929 and this new collection will be dedicated to re-evaluating the narratives, their author, the wider culture that he inhabited and the legacy of his work for the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. We are interested in work that treats the texts either directly or tangentially through other aspects of Conan Doyle’s life and thought.

Le programme ERC Futurepol « A political history of the future » coordonné par Jenny Andersson (CNRS, Sciences Po) organise le 7 juin 2012 de 14h30 à 16h30 à Sciences Po (salle du conseil - 13, rue de l'Université - 75007 Paris) un séminaire intitulé « A political history of techno-scientific governance: the shaping of transnational networks of Cold War elites ».À cette occasion, Egle Rindzeviciute (Sciences Po) et Leena Riska-Campbell (Université d'Helsinky) viendront présenter leurs recherches sur l'International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) et son rôle pendant la Guerre Froide. Elles seront discutées par Marie-Laure Djelic (ESSEC Business School).

If comparison between national or regional contexts has been a driving force for the historiography of the « industrial revolution », and if environmental history has been immediately written on a global scale, the evolution of environmental and risk regulation is often studied according to the national, regional or local scales of the institutions producing the regulations. The aim of this workshop is to invite historians to consider how comparison could advance our understanding of the different ways of regulating risk and environment.

L’université de Toulouse 2 – Le Mirail et le CNRS organisent, avec le soutien de l’European Society for Environmental History (ESEH), l’Association des Journées Internationales d’Histoire de l’Abbaye de Flaran et le FRAMESPA (UMR 5136), une première école d’été d’histoire rurale. Cette manifestation scientifique se déroulera sous le patronage de l’European Society for Environmental History (ESEH).L’école d’été accueillera des chercheurs, enseignants-chercheurs, doctorants et post-doctorants, français et étrangers, travaillant sur les sociétés rurales et l’histoire environnementale de l’époque médiévale et moderne. L’organisation prendra en charge l’essentiel des frais de déplacement et l’intégralité du séjour. Des places sont disponibles pour les jeunes chercheurs. Les dossiers doivent être envoyés avant le 28 mai 2012.
