Rails and urban development. A Comparative Approach between France and the United Kingdom
In France as in the United Kingdom, the issue of sustainable development along with preoccupations about energy costs are leading developers and urban planners to put rail transport at the centre of their concerns. Despite this similar context and though development in both countries has in general been strongly linked to rail, the relationships between urban development and rail transport seem to be quite different. France has seen a strong development of its tram networks since the beginning of the 1980s, whereas in Britain the revival of light rail systems has been more modest. On the other hand, the emergence of urban ‘railway star’ networks to service the peripheries of large cities has been more pronounced in Britain. Yet the role of major transport projects is a crucial issue in both countries in the metropolitan strategies of large urban areas like London and Paris. To comparatively explore the issue of railway transport and urban development the universities of Paris 1 Sorbonne and Liverpool are organising two linked seminars. The first of these will take place in Paris in May 2012, and consider the (re)development of LRT and tramway systems. The second seminar will be held in Liverpool in Autumn 2012 and address the issue of links between territorial development and railways. -

Dimensions of the Labor Market Dynamics
France Japan Comparison

World War 2 : History, Art and Memory
The session will be divided into three complementary sections with the aim of exploring in an original manner a historical moment—the Second World War—that is crucial for the understanding of the contemporary world. The first part of the course will be devoted to the study of Franco-American relations during the war, providing us the opportunity to revisit well-known political and military events from the perspective of American press coverage. The second part of the course will examine the war through the official War Artists' scheme launched in 1939. The third and final part of the course will approach the memory of the Second World War through films that have played a crucial role in shaping our memory of this event, from 1945 to the present day. -

Ideological competition in economic discipline
Economists and economic discourse in Germany and France, 1980-2007
This "colloque junior" attempts to explore economic expert discourses in their relation to politics and the public in comparative perspective. In view of the most recent economic and financial crisis we intend to bring together young and more advanced scholars in economic history, sociology, and economy to discuss the role of economic knowledge at the interface of sciences and the state. In particular, we are interested in the foundations of its particular scientific and political authority in both countries, and how best it might be described and analysed in a wider transnational context. -
