  Liah Greenfeld présentera le premier chapitre de son ouvrage en cours de rédaction Nationalism and Mental Disease. Intitulé « The Cradle of Madness », ce chapitre traite de l’émergence du concept de « madness » dans le contexte du 16e siècle anglais. Cette présentation sera l’occasion de discuter les thèses de Foucault et d’insister sur l’impossibilité de traduire l’anglais « madness » par le terme français de « folie ».

  Writing the history of psychiatry after 1945

  L’histoire de la psychiatrie au 20e siècle est marquée par un vide historiographique remarquable comparée aux 18e et 19e siècles. L’implication de la psychiatrie dans la politique nationale-socialiste en Allemagne et dans les territoires occupée en est une exception : la focalisation sur cette problématique semble avoir conduit à un certain délaissement du reste du siècle. En effet à part cette période, le récit historiographique sur la psychiatrie au 20e siècle n’est guère structuré, ou alors il manque de visibilité, divisé entre différentes épistémologies nationales. Partant du constat d’un déficit de la recherche sur la psychiatrie de l’après 1945, régulièrement soulevé dans la littérature récente , ce workshop vise à effectuer un premier tour d’horizon. Il s’entend dès lors articuler autour de deux questions : la chronologie et le cadre paradigmatique.

  Lancement de la revue International Political Sociology

  Conférence IPS-COST

  La conférence jointe IPS-COST qui a lieu les 26 et 27 octobre prochains au CERI-Sciences Po Paris/CNRS est organisée dans le cadre du lancement de la revue International Political Sociology (IPS). Cette dernière, et le réseau de recherche qui l’entoure souhaitent encourager une perspective générale transdisciplinaire dans l’analyse des phénomènes du monde contemporain, en offrant un espace où pourront s’articuler des contributions de chercheurs du monde entier. La distribution géographique des membres du journal, du réseau COST et des programmes de recherche qui y sont associés (comme Challenge), loin de représenter un obstacle, ouvre au contraire à de nouveaux domaines de recherche. Cette conférence sera ainsi une excellente occasion de lancer cette dynamique de recherche internationale et d’aborder et de discuter des orientations éditoriales de la revue IPS et des visions croisées qu’elle véhicule. La conférence permettra de présenter le projet de la revue en tant que tel mais aussi ses trois premiers numéros. Elle illustrera, par les interventions au programme, les spécificités de la revue mais aussi son ouverture et les bénéfices à tirer d’une approche transversale émanant de disciplines aussi diverses que les Relations internationales, les sciences politiques, la sociologie ou la géographie politique…

  Today a growing number of people in the Humanities suggest that the times of poststructuralism have come to an end. According to them we concentrated on symbols, signs and discourse for far too long. Did we not thereby forget the reality of things? How do we account for the materiality of media, experiments, and writing? What happened to reality, substantiality and presence? This conference aims at discussing contemporary criticism of poststructuralism, its historical conditions, its impact on the present, and its implications for the future. Does poststructuralism really fail to acknowledge reality? How do we evaluate the emerging new theories that challenge poststructuralism?

  Analogous Spaces

  Architecture and the space of information, intellect and action

  The International Conference on Analogous Spaces interrogates the analogy between spaces in which knowledge is preserved, organized, transferred or activated. Although these spaces may differ in material, virtual, or operational ways, there are resemblances if one examines their ‘structure,’ ‘form’ and ‘architecture’. How do these spaces co-exist and interrelate? The conference will be organized around three main themes: 1. The first theme explores spatial analogies in terms of social and intellectual networks. 2. The second theme deals with the space of knowledge and memory. 3. The third theme explores the space required for speed, action and decision making.

  Sciences et savoirs dans le monde atlantique francophone (XVIe-XVIIIe siècles)

  L'objectif de cette rencontre est de confronter diverses analyses portant sur la construction et la circulation des savoirs dans l’Atlantique francophone des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. En s’attachant à souligner certaines spécificités de l’histoire des savoirs dans l'Atlantique français de l'époque moderne, cet atelier abordera des thèmes aussi variés que la cartographie, la botanique, les savoirs médicaux ou les contacts entre savoirs africains, amérindiens et européens. Au-delà d’une réflexion d’ensemble sur les enjeux d’une telle histoire pour penser l’histoire coloniale française de l’époque moderne, une table ronde clôturera cette rencontre afin de situer cette histoire par rapport à celles, plus familières, des espaces coloniaux de la Grande-Bretagne et de l’Espagne.

Ces biotechnologies bouleversent les représentations culturelles, la gouvernance des nouvelles technologies et la réflexion bioéthique.Le colloque "Engineering European Bodies" réunira des chercheurs en bioéthique, sciences sociales (STS), anthropologie culturelle, médecine et des responsables politiques européens et nationaux. Les objectifs du colloque sont de croiser les perspectives empiriques et éthiques en la matière, comprendre les implication des technologies biomédicales en matière de politiques de santé et de santé publique, de débattre de leurs implications pour les politiques européennes et nationales, de réfléchir à la pertinence des méthodologies comparatives et transdisciplinaires.

  Making Images and the Production of Biological Knowledge from Early Modern Natural History to Contemporary Life Sciences

  The 2007 summer school will explore the relationship between making and knowing in the biological sciences as mediated by visual culture from the Renaissance to the modern day. We intend to focus on three interrelated themes. One theme concerns craft practices and the development of visualising technologies. The second theme concerns the historical relation between theory and image in the formation of scientific arguments.Third, there are the cognitive claims about reality that are made through images.

It is now invitingapplications for two posts of Researcher for the project, one of whom willconcentrate on cataloguing microscopes, the other microscopical specimens.The officers will be involved with mounting on-line presentations of thecollections and a special exhibition. The successful candidates willpossess relevant degrees and a proven interest in the technical andcultural history of early scientific instruments.
