All the Beauty of the World. The European Market for non-European Artefacts (18th-20th century)

In the wake of the Western expansion, a fast growing number of non-European artefacts entered the European market. They initially made their way into princely cabinets of curiosities. Enabled by the forced opening and exploitation of more and more parts of the world and pushed by social and technological changes of the time, the 18^th century brought a boom of the market of non-European artefacts in Europe. This came along with the emergence of a broader collecting culture and the development of a rich museumscape. This market and its development in terms of methods and places of exchange and monetary and ideological value of the objects are in the focus of an international symposium that will take place in October 2016 in Berlin.

The Smaller European Powers and China in the Cold War, 1949-1989

This international conference aims to examine the policies of the smaller European powers towards China – and vice versa – during the Cold War. Thereby it focuses, on the European side, on both Western and Eastern Europe – regardless of whether a country was part of the NATO or the Warsaw Pact. Meanwhile, on the Chinese side, the conference proposes to include both Chinas, namely the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (RoC). While this should allow for the analysis of different relational constellations, the chronological framework – that ranges from the Communist victory in China in 1949 to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Tiananmen Square uprising in 1989 – should enable us to identify policy shifts and patterns.

Italy’s Decade of War: 1935-1945 in International Perspective

From the invasion of Abyssinia to the end of World War II, Italy experienced a decade of war. This conference aims to re-evaluate the history of the Italian experience during this ten-year period with a unifying perspective that places the Italian Fascist regime and its foreign and military enterprises in an entirely internationalised framework of analysis. It will bring an international focus upon the Italian role in the break-down of the international system and appeasement, and will analyse the consequences of Italian militarism on a global scale. It will explore comparative and transnational histories of the Italian occupations of France, the Balkans, Greece, and Albania, as well as the Allied occupation of Italy following the defeat.

Balancing Heritage and Innovation

Belgium is a highly populated country with a long history of land exploitation. The landscape is modified through human impact, shaped by diverse agricultural practices, early urbanization and industrialization, the exploitation of quarries and mines and the dense development of canals, railways and motorway networks. Nevertheless, rural areas are important because farming activities, increasingly mechanized and technologically based, contribute to economic activity, especially to Belgian exports. Agriculture plays an important role in maintaining open space and offering many services, which may be called agroservices, to the new residents of the countryside and people seeking recreation. Due to this long history and sophisticated technological responses to different issues, Belgium is a suitable place to reflect on sustainability and how to balance cultural and natural heritage and innovation with special reference to the ecological and social dimensions.

The relationship between heritage and tourism has essentially been analyzed as a “defensive” one. Even if the economic contribution of tourism is considered necessary to insure the conservation of heritage sites and objects, tourism is at the same time suspected to be invasive, destructive and dangerous for the sites’ “authenticity”. This session aims at understanding the processes through which tourism (seen as a system of places, stakeholders/actors, public, practices and imaginaries) becomes a major “heritage producing machine” and identifying what these new production are.

Neoliberal governance and its structures, and dispositifs, are at the core of contemporary debates in the human sciences. David Harvey (2006) considers neoliberalism a theory that places individual freedom as the final goal of all civilisations. Private property rights, free markets and liberal democracy are the means through which individual freedom is best protected and society flourishes, according to neo-liberal views. The primary role of the state is to enforce property rights, while market forces govern the economy. Neo-liberal ideas have shaped global and national policy for over three decades, introducing the primacy of private property and market rationality in all range of public life from education to healthcare, from land governance to environmental protection. Workers' rights in the global North as well as in the South are devalued in favour of individual responsibility.

International solidarity movements in the Low Countries during the long twentieth century

New perspectives and themes

Making sense of the bewildering variety of foreign causes and countries that inspired social movements in Europe as well as the elective and changing affinities of this activism, has proved to be a challenge for many historians. The history of transnational activism during the twentieth century has for a long time been written with a fragmented focus, with little diachronic and synchronic comparison between different solidarity movements and countries. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers working on the topic of international solidarity movements active in Belgium and the Netherlands in the late 19^th and 20^th century in order to gain a better understanding of the nature of these movements, their aims and means of action as well as their reaction to the profound changes that occurred during this period in Western European societies.

The Open Jerusalem project aims to unlock and connect different archives and sources in order to investigate the ordinary entangled history of a global city through the lens of the concept of urban citizenship (citadinité). The objective is to produce historical narratives focusing on the way residents interacted with each other, inhabited and appropriated space(s). The symposium intends to be a forum for deepening discussions and opening scientific debates, based on contributions by scholars specializing in related topics, urban historians and specialists of the region. Transformations of farming systems are marked by increasingly important challenges regarding the environment, food safety and competitiveness of enterprises. How do these transformations bring farming work into question? But farming work has also kept a very strong social and territorial dimension: it gives a place and a status to everyone; it nurtures, safeguards and stabilizes a rural population, and strengthens solidarities largely founded on a local cultural relationship with nature and on agriculture and livestock management. The economic, social and environmental functions of farming work coexist. In rural territories, they may sometimes be complementary, but they can also be quite strained.

This conference aims to assemble different studies laying bridges between modern constitutional theories and theology from the perspective of intellectual history. Though modernity of law and politics has been usually accounted in the context of Reformation, the paper-givers’ approaches to the question will not be restricted in any confessional perspective, Protestant or Catholic. For, whatever the word ‘theology’ may have connoted in the time of religious confrontations, theoretical attempts to legitimize human rights and political authority at those days can be regarded as part of the general current of philosophical investigations, in a new manner and with different foci than ever, into the concept of justice with reference to that of God.

Fashion and clothing, a crucial aspect of social life, has aroused strong interest in recent years in many different fields of the social and human sciences. After a long period of neglect, many historians have begun to develop new approaches to the experience of dress as a situated bodily practice and as a form of language, always allusive and polysemic. The special issue of Contemporanea aims to engage in a reflection on the relationship between clothing and politics in the widest sense of the term, analyzing how “appearances” can express, perform and negotiate political, ideological, and national identities.

The Conference embraces and endorses a broad, ambitious view of ethnographic research. Ethnography is understood as an inquiry into the processes, implications, and meanings of social life and culture in groups, organizations, and institutions across diverse social spaces and settings. Accordingly, contributions to the conference can be based on a variety of methods, including but not limited to participant observation, in-depth interviews, focus group, auto-ethnography, visual ethnography, discourse studies, video-based research and other forms of inquiry inspired and informed by ethnographic sensibility. The Conference welcomes theoretically informed and methodologically sound proposals that contribute to the substantive knowledge of the social world.

Civilians at stake: mass violence in Asia and Europe from 1931 to the present

On the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the end of World War II, the Online Encyclopedia of Mass Violence has organized an international and interdisciplinary meeting. By bringing together key innovative specialists in philosophy, political science, law and history, the conference intends to reflect on the definition and role of civilians during mass violence. Civilians are understood here as victims of bombing or as actors resisting to ground-based mass violence. The meeting focuses on World War II as a touchstone period but also tries to assess its role in the longue durée up to the present. It takes the term “world war” literally, with special emphasis on the Asian continent, aiming at the opening of new horizons leading to more globally oriented research.
