Ninth Annual Conference of Gastronometrica - Society for Quantification in Gastronomy

9th Annual Conference of SQG joined with the 21st annual VDQS Conference

For its ninth conference, "Gastronometrica" or the measuring of "gourmet" products, associations and tastes, enters into adulthood and starts its own call for papers. The annual conference of the SQG (Society of Quantification in Gastronomy) allows researchers around the world involved in the sector of gastronometrics, to present their work and analysis. These may relate to the markets of "gourmet" products (excluding wines and spirits): for example olive oil or tomatoes or citrus fruits, meat or fish, cheese, ... especially on modeling these markets, strategies and impact of labels, distribution networks, ... But also on the relationship between quality and taste of food or the analysis of the results of taste classification: quality and gastronomy, the evolution of food and the institutions of gastronomy; .... And also the relevance of (gourmet) classification of restaurants or hotels and the impact on profitability of this recognition.

Revisiting the Historical Connections between Agriculture, Nutrition, and Development

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in a Global Context

The workshop posits that after 1945, the interconnectedness of questions of nutrition, agriculture and poverty became a central aspect of international governance, and that issues of food and agriculture posed particular challenges to national sovereignty. We thus approach the history of FAO as a history of the ideas and practices of economic and social ‘development’ embedded in local, regional, national, and global contexts and with implications on all these levels. We propose to examine the process by which the FAO facilitated the institutionalisation and globalisation of debates on agricultural production and food security, how it integrated previous international and transnational networks, and how it navigated the tension between agrarian commercialisation and rural welfare during the Cold War and Decolonisation.

1st International Symposium: Hope, Betrayal and Trust

Part of the Research Program on: Lost Virtues, Found Vices

This trans-disciplinary research project is interested in exploring the complex and fluid relationships between hope and trust, and how might betrayal play a productive role in this bond. As concepts, ideas or simple notions, hope and trust seem to have simultaneously lost contemporary currency while being ever more necessary in our every day lives. We seem resigned to a kind of hopelessness, seem unwilling to trust others and are ready and willing to betray whomever we might need to in order to advance our own careers or personal agendas. Yet new technologies require us to place personal information online, to communicate with strangers, and to hold onto the promise of happiness. How are our maintenance of hope, our need to trust and our willingness to betray intertwined? How are these concepts evolving?

How much agreement does the society need?

Observations on the interaction of consent and dissent in society's cultural evolution

Section of the 14th Congress of the German Society of Semiotics at the University of Tübingen, 24th to 27th September 2014.

For the 14th International Congress of the German Society of Semiotics, we are looking for speakers on the issue of social consent and dissent for our sociologically – and culturally – oriented section: How much agreement does a society need? It is concerned with a semiotic discussion about conflict-laden forms of communication, i.e. about the positioned dimension of signs of consent and dissent in the process of socialization within a society or between societies of different cultures.

    Renovatio, inventio, absentia imperii

    De l’Empire romain à l’impérialisme contemporain

At the heart of the present conference will be the ‘reception’, ‘Nachleben’ or ‘permanence’ of the Roman Empire, of an idea and a historical paradigm which since Classical Antiquity has supported the most widespread claims to obtain and consolidate power. The focus will be on ‘culture’, this latter concept intended in a broad sense, i.e. including not only the arts, architecture, literature etc., but also philosophy, religion and, most importantly, discourse. As such, a wide array of themes will be subjected to academic scrutiny. Whereas the main focus will be on Europe and North America, this conference will also reach out towards non-Western contexts, whether or not directly related to the Roman example.

    Relations sociales entre les religions

Numéro thématique de Hungarian Historical Review 2014/4

The social interactions of individuals and groups belonging to different denominations was and is one of the everyday experiences of social manifestations of otherness. Ever since the Middle Ages, Central Europe has been home to various and varying religious and ethnic groups who have lived side by side. The region has been a meeting point for the Latin, Orthodox, Islamic, Christian, and Jewish worlds, and the Reformation made it even more religiously diverse. We encourage the submission of papers that examine the phenomena of religious and cultural diversity in the region from the perspectives of political history and the history of ideas, and we are particularly interested in submissions that address the social, economic, and cultural aspects of religiously and denominationally diverse coexistence.
