Planning for culturally vibrant and sustainable communities

    Comparing Canadian and European approaches

This seminar presents and provides a space to discuss the key findings and insights from a Canadian-European comparative study of the integration of culture in community sustainability policy and planning in Canada and Europe. The research built on a critical examination of Canada's "four-pillar" model of community sustainability, which attempts to integrate cultural considerations into overall local planning for sustainability.

Contemporary configurations of racism and Eurocentrism

Debates on academic and political discourses and practices

The main objective of this international workshop is to promote a debate that engages both with current issues on knowledge/history production and with contemporary discourses/policies on immigration and ‘integration’, taking their intersection as crucial to unravel the relations between the constant (re)making of nation boundaries and ideas of political belonging. We propose that a breakthrough approach requires the challenging of a Eurocentric paradigm, now hegemonic, that is preventing a thorough debate on racism as being embedded on the history of modern science, capitalism, liberal democracies and the state of law.

    Gardens of justice

    Critical legal conference 2012

The theme for this year’s Critical Legal Conference is “Gardens of Justice”. Although the theme may be interpreted in different ways, it suggests thinking about law and justice as a physical as well as a social environment, created for specific purposes, at a certain distance from society and yet as an integral part of it. The theme also invites you to think about justice as a concrete metaphor rather than an abstract concept. Just like any ordinary garden, legal institutions affect both people working in them and people who are just passing through their arrangements.

Young adults and their eating habits

Centre de Recherche de l'Institut Paul Bocuse symposium

Each year, the Institut Paul Bocuse Research Centre welcomes researchers and professionals to exchange over a theme from various angles: biological, psychological, social or economic approaches. For its 2012 edition, the conference concerns the eating behavior of young adults. Indeed, youth is a critical phase that allows the transition from adolescence to adulthood, a period where individuals’ culinary and eating behaviors are constructed. The question can be raised of how far young adults are willing to go on with their family eating habits and how far they wish to break with transmitted values and build new schemes.

Grammar and genre: interfaces and influences

This symposium aims to study the interfaces between grammar and genre: the purpose is to investigate how genre affects grammatical choices. How are genre distinctions reflected in grammar, be it for example literary vs. media genres, or distinctions such as argumentative, informative, persuasive, expressive, or narrative genres? Is a specific genre belonging to a particular domain, e.g. sport news vs. economy news, characterized by certain grammatical choices? Possible genre distinctions are various, and both empirical questions related to the theme and more theoretical implications and reflections thereof are welcome.

    Experimental Methods in Communication

    Revue ESSACHESS volume 6, n°1

Experimental methods are increasingly employed in Information and Communication Sciences (ICS). The coordinators of Essachess – Journal of Communication Studies want to offer in this issue a progress report on “Experimental methods in communication”. Indeed, in a set of relevant disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences, the epistemological interest for these approaches and their complementary input is widely recognized. We want to address the question extremely important for ICS, especially within the French setting: In what theoretical frameworks, for which subjects, and under what conditions are these methods employed and do they prove relevant?

Marshall G.S. Hodgson, Islam and World History

AfrikPlay – Filmes à Conversa | Chat and a movie is a new project presenting films focused in contemporary Africa, organized by CRIA (Network Centre for Anthropology Research) | ISCTE-IUL and Center of African Studies (CEA-IUL) | ISCTE-IUL. Being a ‘work in progress’, aims to bring cinema to the university, opening space for debate and reflection around films that present a innovative look on Africa. The growth of cinematographic productions about Africa has highlighted a number of films that set themselves apart from classical documentary concepts, either in their subjects of interest and chosen aesthetic language, approaching other artistic fields and merging reality with fiction. Some questions arouse our interest: what is the relationship between ‘yesterday’s images and the ones these new generations choose to see in Africa? How these fresh revelations defy our understanding of such a vast and complex continent?
