Conviviality & superdiversity at local level
Our principal aim is to describe, analyze and compare new super-diverse convivial contexts, as they relate to the process of migrations shaping new cultural realms. Our approach does not involve the idealization of harmonic intercultural relations but considers convivial contexts as new fields of intercultural tensions and interactions as an attempt to understand their dynamics and the social, historic and personal factors that lead to willingness to coexist with ethnic heterogeneity or to reject it. Consequently, it envisions applying an innovative framework to understanding intercultural relations among national and migrant populations. From the perspective of social topography, the new convivial cultures are not associated with a specific geographic space. They correspond to different public contexts in which people with links to various ethnic or cultural groups interact. -

Report from the Pop Line: on the life and afterlife of popular
At the end of the first decade of the twenty-first century, popular culture finds itself at a crossroads: has the concept been drained of its meaning because of its overwhelming popularity? After the euphoria around the popular, what afterlife can be expected from it? Should we still be discussing the popular as opposed to high and folk culture? And where and how do pop art forms intersect with the current notion of the popular? This conference wishes to address the complexities surrounding the debate around the notions of both pop and the popular and discuss the possibilities of their afterlife. -

Competition: An Interdisciplinary Perspective
Competition is a pervasive phenomenon in human and animal life. Modern society itself appears to be based on organizing the distribution of goods and privileges through competition. According to Georg Simmel, the sociological essence of competition entails an indirect form of fighting—antagonistic impulse transformed into the realization of some form of community value and perfection. The economic essence of competition may be that it equalizes—wages and profits can be brought into equilibrium by competition. Competition can be defined as a contest between actors, institutions, and, in fact, any group or social form, as well as between animal and ecological species, as they strive for something that all cannot obtain. This interdisciplinary conference will examine competition as a leading organizing principle of contemporary life. -

Transformative learning in Africa
This current issue is interested in programs that take the social, historical and cultural African contexts into consideration to propose innovative forms of education and training which impact positively on learner/practitioner outcomes. Such programs would naturally respond to questions such as: what contributes to transformational learning? Secondly, within the African context, what challenges do practitioners face when their aim is to introduce lasting changes? Third, what does transformational education really mean in an African context?Lastly, what ethical and cultural questions must be considered when planning and delivering transformative learning? -

Contemporary configurations of racism and Eurocentrism
Debates on academic and political discourses and practices
The main objective of this international workshop is to promote a debate that engages both with current issues on knowledge/history production and with contemporary discourses/policies on immigration and ‘integration’, taking their intersection as crucial to unravel the relations between the constant (re)making of nation boundaries and ideas of political belonging. We propose that a breakthrough approach requires the challenging of a Eurocentric paradigm, now hegemonic, that is preventing a thorough debate on racism as being embedded on the history of modern science, capitalism, liberal democracies and the state of law. -

Young adults and their eating habits
Centre de Recherche de l'Institut Paul Bocuse symposium
Each year, the Institut Paul Bocuse Research Centre welcomes researchers and professionals to exchange over a theme from various angles: biological, psychological, social or economic approaches. For its 2012 edition, the conference concerns the eating behavior of young adults. Indeed, youth is a critical phase that allows the transition from adolescence to adulthood, a period where individuals’ culinary and eating behaviors are constructed. The question can be raised of how far young adults are willing to go on with their family eating habits and how far they wish to break with transmitted values and build new schemes. -

Grammar and genre: interfaces and influences
This symposium aims to study the interfaces between grammar and genre: the purpose is to investigate how genre affects grammatical choices. How are genre distinctions reflected in grammar, be it for example literary vs. media genres, or distinctions such as argumentative, informative, persuasive, expressive, or narrative genres? Is a specific genre belonging to a particular domain, e.g. sport news vs. economy news, characterized by certain grammatical choices? Possible genre distinctions are various, and both empirical questions related to the theme and more theoretical implications and reflections thereof are welcome. -
