  Over and Over

  Exploring repetition in popular music

  Over and Over: Exploring repetition in popular music aims at identifying and studying the recent aesthetic and analytical developments of musical repetition. From the 32-bar forms of Tin Pan Alley, through the cyclic forms of modal jazz, to the more recent accumulation of digital layers, beats, and breaks in Electronic Dance Music (EDM), repetition as both an aesthetic disposition or formal musicological property stimulated a diversity of genres and techniques. After decades of riffs, loops, vamps, reiterated rhythmic patterns, as well as pervasive harmonic formulae and recurring structural units in standardized song forms, the time has come to give these notions the place they deserve in the study of popular music.

  Another Music in a Different Room

  Resulting from a series of developed works in the last decade within the framework of social sciences (namely Sociology of Culture, Sociology of Arts, Sociology of Youth, Urban Sociology and Sociology of Music), in this advanced seminar we will have the opportunity of deepening the understanding around the importance, functioning, process, the agents, characteristics, genres and subgenres of the current urban music scenes. The ANOTHER MUSIC IN A DIFFERENT ROOM will be a fruitful space for ideas, discussions and, therefore, for a great developments on scientific knowledge. So, it’s our intention to share all this scientific dynamic with the world in order to contribute to a larger debate on music, youth, lifestyles, culture, cultural scenes, music scenes. In this context, the ideas and discussions held in the Advanced Seminar, both by lecturers and participants, will be published in a Collaborative e-book.

  Images of the courtier in Northern European art, 1500-1700

  L’image du courtisan a été fréquemment étudiée par les historiens de l’art italien, notamment autour de la figure de Baldassare Castiglione. Elle a été, en revanche, singulièrement moins traitée en relation avec les pays d’Europe septentrionale – pays germaniques, Flandres, Provinces-Unies, France, Angleterre. À l’occasion de la rencontre de la RSA à Berlin (2015), nous souhaiterions aborder cette question en proposant une comparaison des théories et des pratiques, des rituels sociaux et religieux, des stratégies politiques et institutionnelles ou des mécanismes d’appartenance et de distinction élitaire. Il s’agira de reconstituer l’imaginaire du courtisan, qui suscite l’émulation entre les espaces curiaux traditionnels (France, Flandres), encourage de nouvelles formes de sociabilités (pays germaniques, Angleterre) ou est reformulé par des sociétés dénuées de cours officielles (Sept-Provinces). L’accent sera mis sur l’examen des formes symboliques prises par cet imaginaire dans les arts visuels (allégories, emblèmes, etc.) mais aussi dans l’architecture et le décor, où la notion de convenance est prépondérante.

  In this third edition of The Conscious Body meetings, we invite academics and dance / performance  makers  to explore together the inter-subjective space occupied by the performer and spectator. This one day event will also mark the end of the first phase of the labodanse project (labodanse.org) with Myriam Gourfink. Pour cette troisième édition des rencontres Conscious Body, nous invitons chercheurs et danseurs / performeurs à explorer ensemble l’espace inter-subjectif qu’occupent le performeur et le spectateur.   Summer School "History Takes Place - Dynamics of Urban Change"

  The summer school invites applications particularly from postgraduate students in history, art history, cultural studies and the social sciences, as well as young architects and city planners. Applicants should have a genuine interest in an interdisciplinary exchange on the history of the city and city development. Participants should have a specialization connected with Rome as well as a keen thematic and methodological interest in urban studies. Sessions will be held in English. Applicants are expected to prepare for the sessions with course materials and reading lists in order to be able to give a presentation on a set topic related to their academic interests and competencies. Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the organizers.

  When Books and Art Hurt

  Censorship, Emotions and Cultural Regulation in South Asia

  This workshop aims at exploring issues of literary and artistic censorship in South Asia (India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) by focusing on the way anticipated "hurt" often justifies the policing and regulation of the artistic sphere (cinema, visual arts, literature). Our point of departure is, in the words of Arjun Appadurai, the observation that culture is today the field "where fantasies of purity, authenticity, borders and security can be enacted" and that the same censors patrol the boundaries of politics and aesthetics (Coetzee). In the Indian subcontinent "hurt feelings" are often reactivated or cultivated, staged and mass-mediatised to claim recognition and legitimacy in the public sphere, to require compensation or "redressal". Many artists, writers and academics point to a politics of ultra-sensitivity and a thriving "marketplace of outrage". Our objective in this workshop is to question the vocabulary, topicality and tangibility of "hurt" in the public sphere on these issues of artistic regulation in South Asia, and to understand what it means to say that words or images wound.

  Democratic Highbrow. Bloomsbury tra élite e cultura di massa

  Bloomsbury group represented a new way of living and working which marked a definitive break with the Victorian tradition and paved the way to modernity in the English culture. Between the wars the group was perceived by the British public alternatively as a stronghold of culture and civilization against barbarism and as the despicable epitome of modernist intellectual elitism. Nowadays Bloomsbury is a major presence in the cultural industry but, at the same time, it continues to raise questions and stimulate critical reflections: was it a coterie or a democratic avant-garde, an intellectual authority or an eccentric circle that “lived in squares and loved in triangles?” These are the issues that the conference seeks to address in a multidisciplinary perspective encompassing sociology of cultural processes and history of art, economics and history of ideas, literature and cultural history.

  Depuis le début des années 2000, l’étude des jeux numériques a pris une place considérable dans la littérature académique consacrée aux phénomènes ludiques, au point où de nombreux articles se proposant de faire un état des lieux des « game studies » actuelles se concentrent essentiellement sur les travaux abordant les jeux sur ce support. Pour questionner les relations qui s’établissent entre jeux « traditionnels » et jeux numériques, cet appel se décline en cinq thématiques qui donneront une vision assez large des différents genres d’articulation envisageables.   Organized in conjunction with the 150° anniversary of the death of Giacomo Meyerbeer, this conference aims to celebrate this composer as well as the development of French Grand opéra after 1831 (the year of Robert le diable). Meyerbeer’s theatrical production system estabilished a Grand opéra model in France and abroad that promoted the reputationy of Parisian productions. The Meyerbeerian standard was assimilated particularly in Germany and Italy; but it also provoked severe criticism, sometimes related to extra-operatic issues such as the composer’s Jewish origin.

  Professor Saskia Sassen will take part in a half-a-day international doctoral workshop, which will be the concluding act of a two-day long seminar on denationalisation and territory (7-8 May 2014). Such doctoral seminar aims at providing Ph.D students who work on issues related to globalisation a dynamic and informal space to present their work, receive inputs from discussants and participants and have a chance to discuss with one of the major sociologists in the field.   This trans-disciplinary research project is interested in exploring the complex and fluid relationships between hope and trust, and how might betrayal play a productive role in this bond. As concepts, ideas or simple notions, hope and trust seem to have simultaneously lost contemporary currency while being ever more necessary in our every day lives. We seem resigned to a kind of hopelessness, seem unwilling to trust others and are ready and willing to betray whomever we might need to in order to advance our own careers or personal agendas. Yet new technologies require us to place personal information online, to communicate with strangers, and to hold onto the promise of happiness. How are our maintenance of hope, our need to trust and our willingness to betray intertwined? How are these concepts evolving?

  La transnationalisation du religieux par la musique

  La transnationalisation du religieux se traduit par une délocalisation et une relocalisation des croyances, rituels et pratiques religieuses qui se réalise au-delà du cadre national étatique, dans des espaces réels ou symboliques, et le plus souvent au moyen de nouveaux imaginaires et récits identitaires. Si l’analyse de cette transnationalisation religieuse a permis de mettre en lumière divers processus par lesquels le religieux transcende les frontières, il est frappant de constater que la musique est rarement appréhendée pour le rôle qu’elle y joue. Or, ce dernier est essentiel dans la transnationalisation des religions à vocation universelle comme l’islam ou le christianisme. La musique contribue aussi activement à la migration des religions de terroir, des mouvements néo-traditionalistes et des cultes associés à une localité d’origine, tels que le vodou haïtien, la santeria cubaine ou le candomble brésilien. Ces phénomènes musicaux, loin d’être nouveaux, ont d’abord donné le jour à des proto-mondialisations religieuses.
