  Youth transitions at risk? Insecurity, precarity and educational mismatch in the youth labour market

  Seventeenth annual workshop of the European Research Network on Transitions in Youth

  Le réseau européen sur l’insertion des jeunes (Transition in Youth Network) a pour objectif de faire avancer les connaissances théoriques et empiriques sur l’insertion des jeunes en Europe et dans le monde. Le dix-septième Workshop en septembre 2009 sera organisé à l’Université de Bourgogne et plus précisément à l'IREDU (UMR 5225) sur le thème de différents risques auxquels doivent faire face les jeunes sur le marché du travail. Les questions de flexibilité, de précarité et de mauvaises adéquations entre formation et emploi seront centrales, même si d'autres thèmatiques peuvent être proposées. Appel à communications pour le 24 avril (langue de travail du workshop : anglais).

  Transnational Communities and Conflict: a Civil Society approach

  Conflict resolution from below?

  The International Civil Society Forum on Conflicts (INFOCON) is an EC funded research project, aiming to offer a better understanding of how Civil Society Organisations representing Transnational Communities can help in preventing and resolving conflicts. This interdisciplinary conference will debate the conflict resolution mechanisms used by different actors and how they can collaborate in order to achieve their major goals. The two-day conference will bring together the INFOCON researchers, policy experts at the local, national and European level, and representatives of the Civil Society. The event will be punctuated by several keynote addresses delivered by leading academics and policy-makers in the field of transnational communities and conflicts.

  European Social Science History Conference 2010

  This is a call for papers for the Network Religion of the next European Social Science History Conference, which will take place at the beautiful Bijloke Site in Ghent, Belgium, from 13 to 16 April 2010. The aim of the ESSHC is bringing together scholars interested in explaining historical phenomena using the methods of the social sciences. The conference is characterized by a lively exchange in many small groups, rather than by formal plenary sessions. The conference welcomes papers and sessions on any historical topic and any historical period. It is organized in 28 networks, which cover a certain topic, on of these being Religion.

  Music and Migration

  This conference will explore the relationship between music and migration by providing new insights into the creative practices and life-stories of migrant artists across the globe. A core theme of the conference will be the motivations and experiences of migrant musicians who leave, return, stay or move beyond their localities. Through the focus on such specific groups of migrants the conference aims to throw light on their identifications in their artistic and every-day lives. Past and on-going research shows that patterns of migration are clearly linked to transnational networks. By focusing on the role of migrant musicians within such networks, this conference seeks to analyse and understand the extent to which musicians’ networks may or may not be special cases within migration studies.

  Multiculturalism, modernity and citizenship in Canada

  Interdisciplinary Conference in Canadian Studies

  From the 1990s on, the Canadian multicultural discourse has increasingly focused on the concept of citizenship, which has in turn meant insisting more on the notion of unity and less on that of diversity. Should this be interpreted as a step backward from multiculturalism taken as an ideology and as a policy? From a European perspective, what lessons can be learnt at a time when a growing number of countries are adopting a multicultural terminology and the European Union needs to negotiate a balance between unity and diversity? Should the emergence of a modern form of citizenship be interpreted as the advent of hybrid identities or as a step towards a certain social and cultural anomy? What are then the prospects for multiple identities within a plural nation?

  New-Build Gentrifications: Forms, Places and Processes

  Dans sa définition classique, la gentrification désigne la transformation physique et sociale d'anciens quartiers urbains. Récemment, ce concept a été élargi pour inclure des projets issus d'opérations de régénération de friches urbaines. Ce séminaire se focalise sur la question de la "new-build gentrification" et sur certaines tendances récentes de la dynamique urbaine telles que les politiques de densification et de régénération. Des contributions seraient particulièrement bienvenues sur le rôle des différents acteurs impliqués dans ces phénomènes (autorités locales et nationales, acteurs du marché immobilier, ménages qui s'installent dans ces nouveaux quartiers).

  Families, constructions of foreignness and migration in 20th century Western Europe

  Conference at Leuven University, Belgium, May 15-16 2008

  This conference aims to discuss and compare national boundaries, policies and experiences with regard to family and migration in twentieth century Western Europe. Three perspectives will receive particular attention at the conference. First, national boundaries and related policies of receiving as well as sending societies with regard to family and migration and their implications for migrants or their relatives who stayed behind; Second, the relationship between the family situations (of mothers, fathers, single women or men, children, elders and so on) and the stereotyping of migrants of 'foreign'. or rather their invisibility. Third, the perspective of migrants and their relatives themselves. How did they construct family and how did they deal with family policies and family cultures in receiving societies as well as in their societies of origin? How were family situations and transnationalism related?

  Colloque international: Nouvelles dynamiques migratoires: activités régulières et irrégulières sur le marché du travail européen, 6-8 Décembre 2007, Université de Nice Sophia Antipolis, France Appel à contributionsLa volonté affichée au cours des dix dernières années par les Etats de l’Union Européenne, de rendre leurs frontières de moins en moins perméables est en apparente contradiction avec les pratiques ayant cours dans certains secteurs économiques, qui visent à exploiter au mieux les avantages d’une main-d’œuvre supposée plus flexible, plus disponible et moins coûteuse que la main-d’œuvre nationale. Ainsi, les étrangers, globalement mis en situation d’infériorité juridique face aux nationaux et souvent confrontés à des discriminations sur le marché du travail, se tournent fréquemment vers les segments d’emploi les plus précaires, ou bien contribuent au fonctionnement d’activités au sein desquelles se côtoient échanges officiellement régulés et pratiques informelles, voire illégales. Dans les sociétés européennes actuelles, la place de l’étranger ne correspond plus majoritairement à la figure de l’ouvrier non qualifié se situant au plus bas de l’échelle sociale, mais renvoie plutôt aujourd’hui à un ensemble de catégories plus ou moins marginalisées, tenues à l’écart de la protection de l’Etat, sinon passibles de ses sanctions. C’est cet état de fait et ses conséquences sur les mouvements migratoires que nous proposons d’interroger.

  Ce colloque prétend pouvoir générer un espace d’échanges et de discussions sur cette question qui demeure peu traitée. Ses principaux objectifs sont : d’une part, installer un dialogue entre les chercheurs et les professionnels afin de proposer un traitement social et juridique cohérent et respectant la prééminence des droits de protection de l’enfance devant les règles de contrôle des flux migratoires ; d’autre part, fédérer l’effort de recherche sur cette nouvelle question afin de mieux appréhender les dynamiques migratoires aujourd’hui à l’oeuvre et ainsi développer une réflexion méthodologique visant à accroître la connaissance des contextes sociaux d’origine de ces mineurs et saisir la pluralité des dimensions de ce depart d’un nombre croissant d'enfants quittant seuls leur pays.
