    Postwar Planning in Transnational Perspective

European Association for Urban History - 2012 Prague

For this Main Session at the EAUH 11th International Conference (Prague, August 29 - September 1, 2012), we invite papers that bring a transnational or comparative methodology to bear on planning postwar cities in Europe and North America. We are interested in how ideas about planning were exchanged across national borders and how planning in turn shaped trans-Atlantic shifts in political ideologies. Paper topics can range from specific urban interventions, such as the provision of housing, to the way cities fit into broader programs of social reform, Keynesianism, or market-oriented competition. We encourage contributions from all disciplines.

    Re-conceptualizing the social

    First Jean Brunhes Conference

The first Jean Brunhes conference will focus on current re-conceptions of the social. To what extent do new perspectives in Human Heography focusing on concepts such as practice, performance, assemblage, network or system represent an epistemological shift? Do they add to, redefine or replace more traditional concepts within human geography such as space, place, territory or region? What kind of knowledge do these perspectives produce and how do they transform the relationship between knowledge and action? What are the political consequences of these perspectives? And what’s next?

    Estuarine and Lagoon Ecosystem Trajectories

Throughout the world, estuaries and lagoons are among the most intensely modified and threatened aquatic ecosystems. Moreover, these systems are vulnerable to the consequences of global change. From a management point of view, there is a tremendous and concrete lack of knowledge regarding the functioning of estuarine ecosystems and the socio-economic relations that bind the various actors to these environments. This ECSA symposium will contribute to provide sound science on past and future estuarine and lagoon ecosystem evolution from ecological, social and political point of view. All example of medium and long terms surveys, describing how the ecosystem and socio-ecosystem is evolving are welcome.

    Tourist Spaces

    Between Practices and Theories

In our conference we intend to question the modalities according to which tourist spaces are lived, analyzed and interpreted. The interventions not only of anthropologists, semioticians and geographers, but also of other specialists, are particularly welcome to examine different tourist phenomena starting from the perspective of space. The fundamental principle upon which we wish to base our interrogation is founded on a precise anthropological conception of space. Besides being an abstract concept, in our perspective space constitutes an active element of cultural modeling: space is not a neutral container within which human actions are accomplished independently from its cultural shaping, but a real and true meaningful feature contributing to structure human actions and give them sense inside a society. If we follow this hypothesis, the reflection on tourist spaces takes on a particularly decisive role for many disciplines and for the definition of culture(s) in a more and more globalized world.

The Transformation of the World Steel Industry from the Twentieth Century to the Present

Populating: the elusive category of urban policies?

    Conference, symposium - Language

    Translation(s), Migration(s), Identities

Governing Rural–Urban Relationships and Periurban Areas in France and Australia

Different Land Use Cultures, Same Issues?

The governance of rural–urban relationships has become a very challenging issue in many countries around the world over the two last decades. Many competing interests are embedded in it: agriculture, metropolitan development, biodiversity conservation, water resources use, etc. Many conflicts take place in periurban areas, for instance. These conflicts are signs of a more general evolution of rural – urban relationships in a context of global change – eg. global warming, loss of biodiversity, the global food challenge, the petrol crisis. This seminar aims to compare how these challenges are tackled in France and in Australia. Considering the differences between the political and institutional contexts of various countries, it will be a great opportunity to think about the role of land use culture in different governance systems. This seminar is organised in partnership with AgroParisTech Clermont-Ferrand, INRA-SAD and UMR METAFORT.

Regional Water Management and Adaptive Management

How to deal with multi-scalar issues?

This seminar aims to discuss the interactions between regionalisation of water management and adaptive management. Regionalisation embeds many scales of time and space, which have to be combined to improve and change stakeholder practices. The seminar will bring together international specialists to analyse how adaptive management can deal with institutional, technical and political multi-scalar issues in order to foster change of practises. This seminar is organised in partnership with AgroParisTech Clermont-Ferrand, INRA-SAD and UMR METAFORT.
