Czech and Slovak Journal of Humanities, special musicological issue
For the upcoming issue of the peer-reviewed journal Czech and Slovak Journal of Humanities (August 2017) we are looking for studies focused on various aspects related to the phenomena of “music” and “popularity”. We invite articles anchored in classical music as well as popular music. Papers which directly or indirectly problematize the traditional polarisation of the aforementioned musical spheres are especially welcome. The issue provides space for specific historical investigations and case studies, but also for wider theoretical considerations which would reflect the construction of the phenomena of the so-called classical and popular music from social, political / ideological, economic, philosophical and other perspectives. In this respect, approaches of ethnomusicology and cultural geography, which would touch on the topic with regard to the specifics of particular localities, regions, nations and ethnic groups, are most desirable.

Repetition/s: Performance and Philosophy in Ljubljana
Contemporary developments in the increasingly intertwined fields of philosophy and performance call for a renewed inquiry into the question of repetition. With its unique critique of ideology arising from a synthesis of German Idealism and Lacanian psychoanalysis, the Ljubljana School (Dolar, Zupančič, Žižek et al.) continues to furnish important theorisations of repetition and performance as they pertain to subjectivity and the political. One of the primary aims of “Repetition/s” will be to investigate and develop the usefulness of the Ljubljana School’s theorisations for the emerging field of Performance Philosophy.

Special issue of Third World Thematics, a new sister journal of Third World Quarterly
What roles do spiritual, witchcraft and magical worldviews play in 21st Century development agendas? Responding to this central query, this special issue seeks to engage interdisciplinary scholarship on the variegated means through which these practices, worldviews and/or ontologies intersect, impact and (re)shape contemporary development concerns, particularly in the co-production of knowledges and practices of development at a range of scales. In this special issue we seek to explore the rapidly changing contexts in which contemporary development knowledges evolve, and in doing so, disrupt conceptions about where valid knowledge resides and how development challenges are framed.

Second International Conference on Uyghur Studies
2e colloque international sur les études Ouïghoures
The Uyghurs are one of the ten most populous stateless nations in the world. While they have a long history of cultural accomplishments and political influences, they have remained marginal in international scholarship given their ambiguous position both in regional studies and in geopolitics. This conference is the second attempt to bring together a broad spectrum of the international community of scholars whose research is focused on the Uyghur people’s history, culture, society.

Festivals in Hainaut at the time of Jacques du Broeucq
The aim of the conference is to bring to widespread public notice a famed series of occasions when, as the hub of Renaissance Europe, the Low Countries commanded the continent’s attention, with Hainaut and its capital Mons featuring as the site of the most famous and influential events. These took place in 1549 when Charles V, Count of Hainaut and Holy Roman Emperor, attempted to determine the continent’s dynastic, political and economic future by nominating as his successor his son Philip of Spain. With this aim in mind, Charles’s sister Mary of Hungary commissioned a series of magnificent festivals, the most lavish of which took place in September of that year at her palaces close to Mons at Binche and Mariemont.

Love, Lust and Longing: Rethinking Intimacy
5th International Symposium of the International Network for Alternative Academia
While discussion of sex become ever more common, opportunities to explore the nature of love are still rare. When the topic is raised, most often the focus is on dramatic experiences or hard cases. The “epic” and the “mundane” are probably more intertwined in our experiences of love than cultural speech and literature admit. Yet, an imbalance continues to exist: we reflect little on the smallness of events that sustain love bonds. What goes unexamined as such are the ways in which love is spoken of and enacted in everyday life. This trans-disciplinary research project is interested in exploring the lived experience of love considering the ways in which it is described and how it is practiced, identifying how love differs from and overlaps with concern, care, friendship and lust and raising questions about the ontology, expression and politics of love.

Devoted to representations of the rural, it will bring together studies in crime fiction and media culture looking at a variety of outlets such as fiction, film, television, comics, games and many others and inspect their various engagements with the concept of "rurality". Interdisciplinary papers are welcomed, but not contained to, Anthropology, Modern Languages, English, Film and Media Studies, History, Cultural Studies, Historical/Cultural/Rural Geography, Sociology, Spatial Planning. By bringing together an interdisciplinary group we will address how cultural constructions of the rural often ‘set the scene’ for crime fiction.

The making of cultural policies
Trans-Acting Matters: Areas and Eras of a (Post-)Ottoman Globalization
This workshop takes place in the framework of the research project “Trans-Acting Matters: Areas and Eras of a (Post-)Ottoman Globalization”. It aims to analyse the making of cultural policies and actions in Turkey and the post-ottoman spaces. We wish to question the ways in which the circulations participate in the construction of cultural policies today as well as to rethink the earlier cultural policies and actions from the late Ottoman Empire onwards. The workshop attempts to question the co-production of cultural policies, of their spaces and territories, as well as the plurality of the conceptions of culture carried by cultural policies. The workshop will focus on the phenomena of hybridity, of connections, and associations of various actors which co-produce original forms of cultural policies.

Culture(s) in Sustainable Futures
Theories, practices and policies
Is culture the fourth pillar of sustainability alongside the ecological, economic and social aspects? How does culture act as a catalyst for ecological sustainability, human well-being and economic viability? What would our futures look like if sustainability was embedded in the multiple dimensions of culture? This landmark conference explores the roles and meanings of culture in sustainable development. The new ideas generated in the conference will inform and advance understandings of sustainability with cultural studies and practices, and vice versa.

By the book. The book and the study of its digital transformation
This two-day conference brings together scholars from the field of publishing studies to examine key issues around the digital transformation of the book, as well as to discuss the developing field of publishing studies. Analysed will be a key set of questions. How is the landscape of the book in Europe changing due to digital transformation? How will terrestrial bookshops survive the growth of ebooks? Are there international forces for change which will affect all markets, and what domestic factors will prevail? What is the connection between the spread of English as the global lingua franca and the growth of digital publishing?

Tourist mobility patterns, heritage and globalisation
Postdoctoral fellowship Labex Dynamite 2014
The 1980s saw the advent of a new phase of globalisation, a new phase of capitalism, a new era of heritage and a new era of tourism. While these evolutions have been clearly identified, they are often approached separately. If the changes relating to heritage can be explained by a crisis in our relationships with time, or even by a new "presentist" view of history, the new mobility patterns of tourism relate a new relationship with space that is typical of contemporary globalisation. The research project in which the post-doc candidate will be involved sets out to consider these dynamics of globalisation, heritage and tourism conjointly.
