We are not only interested in the manifestations and history of these scenes, but also in how fandom themselves participate in the creation and distribution of historical discourse about the objects of their affection.   Cultural policies. What's new?

  ICCA International Symposium

  The question of cultural policies and of their convergence towards a single model - or on the contrary of their divergences - arises in a context of globalization. Indeed, many factors encourage convergence: the industrialization of a wide part of cultural activities; the polarization between structures that are both agile and open to digital technologies and more traditional structures; the global market power of GAFAM on three complementary fields : access to culture via search engines, distribution of cultural goods via e-commerce, digitization of cultural goods and services; the importance given to copyright enforcement; the role of the international art market and positioning of museums facing the evolution of this market (especially competition and rise in prices); public / private rebalancing, even in countries where public intervention is predominant.

  Risk, Violence, and Collective Agency

  Ce colloque réunira un groupe multidisciplinaire de chercheurs littéraires, de philosophes, de sociologues et d'historiens pour explorer l'interrelation des concepts de risque, de violence et d'action collective. Les participants le feront dans des contextes littéraires, historiques et géographiques variés, tels que le Paris de Rimbaud ou de Zola, la Russie de Dostoïevski ou de Mandelstam, les guerres de religion françaises du XVI^e siècle ou le génocide arménien. Les conversations porteront sur l'œuvre critique et philosophique de Hobbes, Goethe, Arendt, Berlin, Derrida ou Balibar. Ce qui est en jeu, c'est la manière dont les théories du risque et de l'action collective peuvent révéler de nouvelles façons de comprendre non seulement les actes de violence ou de massacre, le nihilisme et l'affect politique collectif, la volonté et la démocratie collectives, le totalitarisme et le génocide, mais aussi la complexité de leurs représentations esthétique, littéraire, historiographique ou sociologique.

  Critically assessing the projects and politics underpinning the Smart City Mission

  Following on a first meeting devoted to India’s Smart City Mission held in September 2018, the specific aim of this international workshop is to focus on issues of social and environmental sustainability. On the basis of field-based investigations, the presenters will critically assess the smart city experiments as they unfold. Among the questions to be discussed are the following: How does India’s engagement with smart cities compare with other international cases? To what extent do projects in India draw on cutting-edge technologies? How can we characterize the governance and politics of India’s engagement with ‘smart urbanism’?

  Identities and Identifications: Politicized Uses of Collective Identities (8th Edition)

  Identity is one of the crown jewelries in the kingdom of ‘contested concepts’. Few concepts are so integral to social assumptions, beliefs and claims of belonging while simultaneously escaping a clear definition or even a minimal consensus. The idea of identity is conceived to provide some unity and recognition while it also exists by separation and differentiation. From personal to group and collective identities, multiple layers of identifications juxtapose conflict or exclude. Few concepts were used as much as identity for contradictory purposes. From the fragile individual identities as self-solidifying frameworks, to layered in-group identifications in families, orders, organizations, religions, ethnic groups, regions, nation-states, supra-national entities or any other social entities, the idea of identity always shows up in the core of debates and makes everything either too dangerously simple or too complicated. Constructivist and de-constructivist strategies have led to the same result: the eternal return of the topic. Some say we should drop the concept, some say we should keep it and refine it, some say we should look at it in a dynamic fashion while some say it’s the reason for resistance to change. In the meantime, identities are programmatically asserted and promoted to generate cohesion and demand recognition while the process of identification excludes and creates boundaries and alterity making practices.

  In the context of a global system of production that is increasingly interconnected and exponentially exercising pressure on the planet and people’s lives, this conference is inspired by the desire to imagine a system of competition law (or beyond competition law) that is fully embedded in the double limit of the planetary boundaries and of social considerations. To achieve this goal, the organizing partners aim to bring together young academics (master’s, PhD, up to four years into tenure track) challenging the status quo with more experienced experts in the areas of competition law and sustainability to rethink competition law and discuss new ways of regulation, interactions between markets, regulators and society and legal enforcement that take into account social and environmental externalities.

  Ce colloque international s’inscrit dans un renouvellement récent et très dynamique de la recherche sur l’État en économie supposant l’examen critique de deux postulats dominants de la discipline : 1) Le postulat d’un État apolitique ou d’une dictature bienveillante qui ne poursuit aucun intérêt privé et qui maximise l’intérêt général. 2) Le postulat de « doux commerce » c’est-à-dire de l’exclusion des conflits sociaux, des guerres inter et intra étatiques en présence des marchés. Nos échanges visent à explorer comment les dimensions régalienne, prudentielle, et providentielle de l’État peuvent être interprétées si l’on relâche ces deux hypothèses.   Solidarity at Work

  The term “solidarity” seems to have fallen out of theoretical fashion despite the fact that it has a long history of describing the shared struggles of those oppressed by economic or political power structures. This conference aims to explore the past, present and future of “solidarity at work” on both the conceptual and empirical level. Its focus is on the world of work, which it wants to investigate from a transnational perspective. How have the concepts, conceptions and categories of solidarity shaped labor and the labor movements of different countries? What about the divergent conceptual meanings and practices in these assorted contexts? How have power relations as well as people’s everyday life been changed by the various practices related to solidarity? How do technological and managerial changes help to shift ideas and practices of solidarity? Do we see new forms emerging? Who are the agents of “solidarity at work” and what are the concrete mechanisms involved? More broadly, what are the levers and brakes of solidarity in the workplace today?

  Producing concerts, working in live music

  Live music has long been neglected by music scholars; however it is now subject to renewed interest. Recently, researchers have focused on the economics of live music  and the work of musicians. However, the "support personnel" (Becker, 2010) needed in order to produce concerts is still not frequently studied. Little is known about the different occupations (technicians, bookers, programmers) and organizations (festivals, ticket retailers, public funders) required to produce concerts, but also to market live music, and to exploit it in other formats (e.g. live broadcasting, recording). In order to address this gap, this workshop proposes to explore three areas of investigation.
