Love, Lust and Longing: Rethinking Intimacy
Research Program on Recasting Bonds, 4th International Symposium
While discussion of sex become ever more common, opportunities to explore the nature of love are still rare. When the topic is raised, most often the focus is on dramatic experiences or hard cases. The “epic” and the “mundane” are probably more intertwined in our experiences of love than cultural speech and literature admit. Yet, an imbalance continues to exist: we reflect little on the smallness of events that sustain love bonds. What goes unexamined as such are the ways in which love is spoken of and enacted in everyday life. This trans-disciplinary research project is interested in exploring the lived experience of love considering the ways in which it is described and how it is practiced, identifying how love differs from and overlaps with concern, care, friendship and lust and raising questions about the ontology, expression and politics of love.

Postmodern Madness and the Reconstruction of Subjectivities
Research Program on Space, Time and New Technologies of the Self, 1st International Symposium
This trans-disciplinary research project is interested in exploring the links between madness, subjectivity, and postmodern narratives. Or, from a different angle, we seek to investigate the ways postmodern discourses encompass ideals of madness in relation to the construction of subjectivity. Schizophrenia, paranoia, perversion, deviation are often called upon and incorporated in the construction of the postmodern subject. How are these terms used to construct subjectivities in cultures in which anxiety, unreason, and disorder are the norm? How is meaning refashioned to pass from 'clinical abnormality' to forms of social 'normality'? How is this concept employed in constructing the postmodern subject in literature, movies, music, photography, painting, and other forms of art?

Freud, a century after Totem and Taboo
Anthropology, culture and cognition
Although hardly avoiding intense criticism by anthropologists such as Boas and Malinowski, Freud’s theories did, however, have a profound impact upon anthropology, receiving an enthusiastic reception among Culture and Personality theorists during the middle decades of the 20th century. Leading anthropologists of this trend relied on Freud’s contributions to develop approaches based on the relationship between culture and personality, expanding their views on the importance of culture in personality formation, on the constitution of culture patterns and on the formulation of national character. One hundred years after the publication of Totem and Taboo (1913), this two-day seminar seeks to address the influence of Freud’s legacy in contemporary anthropological thought. It also aims to explore the new interface between the two disciplines, namely through the recent work produced on kinship and on the cognitive approaches to the study of religion.

It is indisputable that, with his operas, Wagner introduced profound new insights relating music, language (poetry) and emotion. It is widely consensual that with his dramas, Wagner intended to explore human mind and behaviour with the power of music. In fact, never before was music so systematically used as a tool for describing and interpreting facts, events, beliefs, desires, intentions, memories and emotions. In the last decades, there has been much advance in the understanding of the cerebral basis of music and its relationships with brain mechanisms of language, cognition and emotion. In short, music has also been shown to be a powerful pathway to understand human mind and behaviour...

Therefore, Wagner’s bicentennial could be an excellent opportunity for a meeting, summarizing the recent advances of brain research on these themes.

The religious experience of the "disease of the soul" and its definitions in the early modern period: censorship, dissent and self-representation
The seminar aims at exploring the different meanings of the term "melancholy" in early modern religion, both Protestant and Catholic. One of its main purposes will be to enquire into, clarify, and emphasize both elements of continuity and what was specific to each of the diverse discourses on melancholy within the historical, socio-cultural, political, geographical and linguistic contexts that framed its production. -

Conflits, limites, reconnaissance

Transformative learning in Africa
This current issue is interested in programs that take the social, historical and cultural African contexts into consideration to propose innovative forms of education and training which impact positively on learner/practitioner outcomes. Such programs would naturally respond to questions such as: what contributes to transformational learning? Secondly, within the African context, what challenges do practitioners face when their aim is to introduce lasting changes? Third, what does transformational education really mean in an African context?Lastly, what ethical and cultural questions must be considered when planning and delivering transformative learning? -

Critical legal conference 2012
The theme for this year’s Critical Legal Conference is “Gardens of Justice”. Although the theme may be interpreted in different ways, it suggests thinking about law and justice as a physical as well as a social environment, created for specific purposes, at a certain distance from society and yet as an integral part of it. The theme also invites you to think about justice as a concrete metaphor rather than an abstract concept. Just like any ordinary garden, legal institutions affect both people working in them and people who are just passing through their arrangements. -
