Academy as Community: English and American Studies in Portugal and Europe

    34th APEAA Meeting

The tradition of English and American studies in Portugal has long been supported by the dynamics of academic associativism, in which APEAA’s peer network stands out, involving national and international institutions, and establishing continued interactions with research centres. At a time when political and cultural paradigms are on the verge of crisis and/or change, it is of the utmost importance to revisit the theoretical and pragmatic frameworks that sustain (and constrain) our research practices.  Thus, this conference aims to provide a forum to discuss how Anglo-American scholarship, with its vocation for plurality and innovative interdisciplinary proposals, may progress. We also want to build strategies of cohesion among our peers in order to better disseminate our contribution to the interpretation and the fruition of meaning(s), valuing a plurality of cultural and aesthetic manifestations.

    Music, poetry and the brain

It is indisputable that, with his operas, Wagner introduced profound new insights relating music, language (poetry) and emotion. It is widely consensual that with his dramas, Wagner intended to explore human mind and behaviour with the power of music. In fact, never before was music so systematically used as a tool for describing and interpreting facts, events, beliefs, desires, intentions, memories and emotions. In the last decades, there has been much advance in the understanding of the cerebral basis of music and its relationships with brain mechanisms of language, cognition and emotion. In short, music has also been shown to be a powerful pathway to understand human mind and behaviour...

    PAC 2013: Spoken English Corpora

    From annotation to interphonologies

The PAC Project “La Phonologie de l’Anglais Contemporain : usages, variétés et structure ; The Phonology of Contemporary English: usage, varieties and structure” is coordinated by Anne Przewozny, Philip Carr and Jacques Durand. Among other things it aims at: giving a better picture of spoken English in its unity and diversity (geographical, social and stylistic); testing phonological and phonetic models from a synchronic and diachronic point of view, making room for the systematic study of variation; favouring communication between specialists in speech and in phonological theory; providing data and analyses which will help improve the teaching of English as a foreign language.

Therefore, Wagner’s bicentennial could be an excellent opportunity for a meeting, summarizing the recent advances of brain research on these themes.

    Drama and philosophy

"Drama and Philosophy - a recurrent and most needed encounter" works on reviewing the multiple dependence between philosophy and drama, on developing the contribution of dramatic concepts to philosophical thought, and vice versa, the contribution of philosophy to the scenic languages. We understand “drama” in the larger sense: it is precisely by the multiplicity of its languages that drama can enrich the philosophy of language.

    Victorian persistence: text, image, theory

    Programme 2012-2013

The present-day globalization of Victorian writing can be traced back to the extraordinary plasticity of its textual and visual forms, as it travels from place to place and media to media. Such temporal, geographical, cultural and intermedial persistence is to be the subject of a seminar which will consider the different modes of resistance of literature within the nineteenth-century as well as its survival and rebirth in later times.

    Electricity and Imagination

    Seminar Machines and Imagination, 2012-2013

Throughout the nineteenth century the astonishing technical success of electricity had a great impact on the contemporary imagination. The Volta’s battery which impressed Napoleon, the telegraph system that linked Europe and United States and later the electric light and the x-rays fascinated not only physicists but also artists, men of letters and eclectic intellectuals. The lightning  that gives life to the doctor Frankenstein’s creature in the Mary Shelley novel is the most known case. But also the photographs representing Duchenne de Boulogne’s studies of human facial expressions produced via electrical stimulation and the ‘futuristic’ arc lamp painted by Giacomo Balla are emblematic examples of reactions and interactions between technical development and artistic creativity. The aim of the seminar is to explore how, in a period that was later defined the age of electricity, both science and arts contribute to the representation of electrical technologies.

Approaches to Complex Predicates (ACP 2013)

CALL FOR PAPERSDeadline:  16 December 2012Complex predicates can be loosely defined as a sequence of items that behave as a single predicate, projecting a single argument structure within a clause. Each of the members of the predicate contributes part of the information ordinarily associated with a single head.Complex predicates are of various types and are found in typologically different languages. They give rise to important empirical and theoretical issues cutting across various subfields of linguistics, such as:- Syntactic and semantic modeling of complex predicate formation: compositionality, argument structure, event structure, etc.- Typological issues in complex predicate formation- Resemblances/dissemblances between syntactic and morphological processes of lexeme formation: idiomaticity, semantic groupings, lexicalization, analogical formation, exemplarity, etc.- Production and processing of complex predicates: storage vs. online processing, acquisition, etc.- Complex predicates and multiword expressionsThe purpose of the conference is to bring together those working on complex predicates in different perspectives and with a variety of approaches.

Fernando Pessoa as English reader and writer

Fernando Pessoa's British education left long-lasting traces in his writings, particularly (but not exclusively) in his English texts. The aim of this issue is to study the pivotal role that the English language and literary tradition played in Pessoa's production throughout his life. In order to achieve this, we propose a volume traversing a wide range of topics bridging the author's Archive and Private Library.  Portuguese Literary & Cultural Studies is a multilingual interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journal that addresses the literatures and cultures of the diverse communities of the Portuguese-speaking world in terms of critical and theoretical approaches.

Beyond French New Languages for African Diasporic Literature

In recent years, Africans from former French colonies in both the Maghreb and Sub-Saharan regions have been settling in countries other than France and writing in languages other than French. This break with the colonial and postcolonial habits of la Françafrique – the familiar bind of metropole and colony – has been going on for years and is now ripe for analysis. Writing in German, Italian, Dutch, Catalan, Spanish, English, and other languages, these authors suggest new patterns of diasporic belonging and raise new questions about the postcolonial world. Issues of immigration, language choice, cosmopolitanism, global citizenship, and world literature will be addressed.

    Literature and Law

The idea of academic "discipline" has a long and venerable history, reaching back to the Renaissance and beyond. But the term "discipline" with the meaning of "branch of knowledge" or "department" only started to come into common use from about 1850. Nowadays interdisciplinary studies in law and literature extend well beyond the limits of universities and law colleges. In most English-speaking countries lawyers and judges have frequent recourse to literature in their pleadings or judgments. The theoretical phenomena described by Cardozo, Posner or White have now given rise to practical applications by academics, lawyers and judges alike.

Gender and the Periphery. Grammatical and social Gender from the Margins

This call for chapters aims to bring together studies on the morpho-syntactical phenomenon of gender through its relationships with social gender, focusing on its periphery. This periphery can be understood either in the sense that the studied languages are so called minority languages and thus less described, or because this morpho-syntactical dimension has not received the interest it deserves in the languages studied. Propositions including a focus on the peripheral uses of gender to open the horizon of possibilities concerning gender configurations are also welcome, as far as they are tied to a linguistic periphery.

    IIEMCA 2013: Technologies and Techniques

11th international IIEMCA conference on ethnomethodology and conversation analysis

Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis are primarily concerned with the techniques actors utilize to accomplish the social, be it through workplace studies, studies of scientific knowledge, studies of interactional order, etc. The fundamental question that confronts Ethnomethodologists and Conversation Analysts - “how does this interaction get done?” – has and will thus receive a variety of related answers. We invite papers from the international community of EM/CA scholars that address the issues, practices and phenomena related to Technologies and Techniques. As is EM/CAs tradition, we cast these categories in the broadest possible conception, but are particularly interested in papers which address the themes of Technology in the Home, Workplace, or related settings; Technology’s Impact on Theory/Method; Technological Approaches to Data Analysis; Everyday Technology; and The Artful Techniques of Social Interaction.
