  Codicologie et paléographie à l'ère du numérique II

  It is only a year since the Institute of Documentology and Scholarly Editing (IDE) undertook an initiative entitled “Codicology and Palaeography in the Digital Age”. Yet its first results have already been written up and published: in July 2009, the anthology “Codicology and Palaeography in the Digital Age” was launched at an international symposium in Munich. Despite the fact that the anthology gives a broad insight into theory and practice, some relevant subjects and questions have not been covered. For this reason the IDE plans to publish a second volume of “Codicology and Palaeography in the Digital Age”.   Une journée d'étude proposée par la communauté Digital Medievalist - A Symposium proposed by the Digital Medievalist Community

  Cette journée propose de faire le point sur les apports des pratiques informatiques aux études médiévales, et les diverses façons de soutenir les projets intégrant une dimension numérique. Une session et une table ronde, organisées autour de la communauté « Digital Medievalist » (www.digitalmedievalist.org), permettront de partager les expériences variées d'un panel de médiévistes d'Europe et d'Amérique du Nord.

  Centuriation systems and methods of agrarian organisation from the Roman period to the early Middle Age

  Methodological and interpretative issues

  One of the main characteristics of Roman settlement consists in the implementation of a series of interventions aiming at preparing specific areas for cultivation and making land divisions and distributions. The most important and characteristic feature of these operations is the realization of centuriation systems, that have often radically modified the landscape and agrarian morphology of the countryside. The aim of this conference is to define a methodological protocol of common lines of research on this subject, in order to assign specific roles to the different sources and research tools. The conference will also provide opportunities to deepen a number of themes concerning historical aspects of this phenomenon, particularly that of the continuity or discontinuity of the centuriation systems.

  European Social Science History Conference 2010

  This is a call for papers for the Network Religion of the next European Social Science History Conference, which will take place at the beautiful Bijloke Site in Ghent, Belgium, from 13 to 16 April 2010. The aim of the ESSHC is bringing together scholars interested in explaining historical phenomena using the methods of the social sciences. The conference is characterized by a lively exchange in many small groups, rather than by formal plenary sessions. The conference welcomes papers and sessions on any historical topic and any historical period. It is organized in 28 networks, which cover a certain topic, on of these being Religion.

  Medieval Manuscript Miscellanies: Composition, Authorship, Use

  Case studies on particular medieval manuscript miscellanies written in any language are welcome at the workshop concentrating especially on three aspects: Composition: How do the contents fit together in specific cases? Is there a plan or a reason behind? If so, what does the selection tells about the compiler’s interests? Authorship: To what degree are the miscellany compilers and gatherers authors? Is there a personal touch discernable and interpretable? Use: How were these manuscripts actually used? Can a specific use of a particular miscellany be detected?Please, send a brief (300-400 words) abstract of the proposed 20-minute paper together with information on your affiliation and research interests to Lucie Doležalová at dolezalova@cts.cuni.cz by December 31, 2008.

  Colloque international et pluridisciplinaire à l'université de Paris Est Marne-la-Vallée sur les liens entre histoire et littérature dans l'Europe médiévale (23-24 octobre 2009). Les médiévistes peuvent-ils opposer réel et imaginaire ? 1. Interdépendance littérature et histoire. Les grand textes littéraires, miroir de la société. 2. Rhétorique des documents historiques.3. Des genres hybrides : chroniques, Vies de Saints, etc. 4. Liens entre réalité et fiction. Expériences et analyses. Faits et images. Choses et légendes. Imagination et création. Histoire et vérité. 5. Les historiens au Moyen Age : rapports au passé, à l'actualité. Définitions médiévales d'un fait, d'un document historiques, les autorités. 6. Mises en scène, propagande, sous-entendus, mensonges, manipulation : les textes (historiques, politiques, économiques, etc.) orientés. 7. Mentalités médiévales : comment rendre compte de l'inconnu, l'ailleurs, l'incompréhensible. Connaissances et signification(s). 8. Usage de plus en plus courant par les historiens actuels de sources littéraires et, inversement, éclairage d'un poème, d'une romance par son contexte historique. Regards croisés et complémentaires d'historiens et de spécialistes de la littérature. 9. Palette multidisciplinaire des études médiévales.

  Peter of Auvergne - University Master of the 13th Century

  Pierre d’Auvergne (m. 1304) fut un des plus grands maîtres actifs à l’Université de Paris au dernier quart du treizième siècle. À coté d’auteurs comme Albert le Grand, Thomas d’Aquin ou Jean Buridan, Pierre d’Auvergne est considéré encore aujourd’hui parmi les plus importants commentateurs médiévaux du Corpus Aristotelicum, duquel il commenta une ample partie. L’importance de sa pensée est attestée soit par l’influence qu’il exerça sur des auteurs postérieures, soit par le nombre des manuscrits qui contiennent ses ouvrages.Bien qu’il y ait nombreux articles et éditions dédiés à cet auteur, ce colloque à réaliser à l’Université de Fribourg (CH) sera le premier entièrement consacré à Pierre d’Auvergne. Avec des spécialistes provenant de divers pays, le programme couvre un éventail de matières, qui va de sa biographie et carrière à Paris jusqu’à sa pensée et son influence.

  La pratique sociale de l'écrit à travers la documentation médiévale bourguignonne

  Productions, remplois, mises en registre

  Le propos de ce colloque est de considérer la documentation bourguignonne médiévale, tout support et forme confondus, comme élément de départ d’une réflexion élargie et dans la longue durée sur les pratiques et les usages de l’écrit, en prenant comme fil conducteur la génétique documentaire et ses transformations. Il s’agira ainsi de considérer cette documentation comme un objet, ou des objets, d’étude globale, à l’intersection des contenus et des matérialités tangibles. Dès lors, on s’intéressera aux contextes et aux techniques de production, aux principes et aux structures de mise en registre, d’assemblage et de transmission, et aux enjeux des traitements et des remplois dans le temps.

  Cultures matérielles, cultures visuelles du costume dans les cours européennes (1300-1815)

  Material & visual cultures of dress in european courts (1300-1815)

  Ce colloque propose d’interroger la question vestimentaire dans les cours européennes, dans une perspective temporelle large, partant en amont de la fin du Moyen Âge, quand s’invente un « corps de mode » et quand les cours prennent leur essor. Il s’achève avec les derniers éclats de la cour impériale française. Le colloque de Versailles sera l’occasion de faire le point sur les travaux dans ce domaine, sur un temps long, entre 1300 et 1815, qui permettra aux participants de prendre la mesure des évolutions, de comparer les cours entre elles et d’appréhender leurs influences mutuelles. Il s’inscrit dans trois champs de recherche : le champ très actif des Court studies qui ont mis en évidence le rôle de la cour comme lieu de pouvoir et de culture, celui de l’histoire de la culture matérielle et de la consommation et celui de la culture des apparences vestimentaires et des cultures visuelles, domaines de recherche actuellement en plein essor.

  A research workshop of the Israel Science Foundation (ISF) and the Chaim Herzog Center for Middle East Studies and Diplomacy, with support from the President and Rector, Ben Gurion University of the Negev (BGU), Beer Sheva, titled: “Art as Historical Text”, is organized by Avital Heyman, Department of the Arts, BGU. The workshop will be held in BGU on 14-16 May 2007. Topics to be discussed: Pilgrimage and cultic practices in Jewish, Christian, and Muslim societies; construction of cultic shrines; art and historical, social, and liturgical reality (East and West).

  Boethius (Rome, ca. 480 - Pavia, ca. 524) : the Man, the Philosopher, the Scientist, his Work and its OutreachIs the thème of the second annual international scinetific Symposium organized by the Musée Conservatorium of Parchement et Illumination of Duras (France, Lot-et-Garonne, 47120), under the scientifique direction of Dr. Illo Humphrey, Ph. D., and und the high Patronage of the City of Duras. This theme, implying a wide rang of interdisciplinary and integrated research, namely: the philosophy of numbers and proportions (arithmetic – mathematics, music, geometry, astronomy, the philosophy of moral ethics, the philosophy of image painting (Iconography), the philosophy of sense perception, the philosophy of the cognitive process, etc., has already given rise to great enthusiasm, not only on the part of the general public in Aquitania, but also on the part of specialized Institutions around the world doing research on subjects related to Boethius, among which : the IBS (International Boethius Society, USA), the CESR (Centre d'Études Supérieures de la Renaissance at the Université François Rabelais of Tours, l'IRHT-CNRS at Orléans-la-Source, the Faculty de Music de the Ionian University at Corfu in Greece, the SWIF (Sito Web Italiano per la Filosofia), etc. This event, destined for both a large Aquitanian and international audience sensitive to the protection of the tangible and intangible cultural, scientific-philosophical and educational heritage, is presented within the framework of the annual Medieval Festivities of the Valley of the Dropt and the Valley of the Bastides, as well as in close conjunction with the cultural activities of the City of Duras, and under the aupices of the Conseil général of Lot-et-Garonne, the Conseil Régional of Aquitania, the DRAC of Aquitania, the Communauté de Communes of Duras.
