Ph.d. workshop with Saskia Sassen

Professor Saskia Sassen will take part in a half-a-day international doctoral workshop, which will be the concluding act of a two-day long seminar on denationalisation and territory (7-8 May 2014). Such doctoral seminar aims at providing Ph.D students who work on issues related to globalisation a dynamic and informal space to present their work, receive inputs from discussants and participants and have a chance to discuss with one of the major sociologists in the field. The participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their research questions, to receive informed opinions and to meet other academics working on similar issues in different regional context.

La durée de vie des Anglais a augmenté mais les disparités sanitaires se sont accentuées dans le même temps (Marmot, 2010). L’objectif de la journée d’études permettra de lever le voile sur ces phénomènes et de les analyser au regard d’enquêtes qualitatives et quantitatives par exemple. Il s’agira d’étudier les réalités de la vie quotidienne de ces parents, les inégalités sociales et géographiques en matière de santé, de comprendre les mécanismes et d’envisager les enjeux sanitaires sur les futures générations tout en sachant que la responsabilité de la santé publique est transférée du National Health Service aux collectivités locales, selon les propositions du gouvernement de coalition.

En Afrique, les séquelles de la traite et de l'esclavage sont encore vivaces et on ne peut douter de leur poids dans les relations entretenues par les différentes composantes de la société et de la construction des États-nations contemporains. Les héritages sont nombreux, diversifiés, douloureux parfois et extrêmement sensibles. D'une façon générale, la question de la mémoire de l'esclavage et de sa mise en patrimoine est maîtresse dans le monde atlantique ainsi que dans les sociétés insulaires de l'océan Indien qui ont été façonnées par une économie de plantations. Alors que les voix de la mémoire percent dans des pays comme le Sénégal ou le Bénin, elles émergent seulement en Afrique de l'Est à l'heure actuelle. L’exigence de mémoire ainsi que la transmission des savoirs liés aux esclavages est au cœur de ce colloque et devrait permettre d'alimenter les débats nationaux qui continuent de surgir à l'heure actuelle.

This trans-disciplinary research project is interested in exploring the complex and fluid relationships between hope and trust, and how might betrayal play a productive role in this bond. As concepts, ideas or simple notions, hope and trust seem to have simultaneously lost contemporary currency while being ever more necessary in our every day lives. We seem resigned to a kind of hopelessness, seem unwilling to trust others and are ready and willing to betray whomever we might need to in order to advance our own careers or personal agendas. Yet new technologies require us to place personal information online, to communicate with strangers, and to hold onto the promise of happiness. How are our maintenance of hope, our need to trust and our willingness to betray intertwined? How are these concepts evolving?

L'IEA de Paris offre la possibilité aux chercheurs qu’il accueillera à partir d’octobre 2014 ou janvier 2015, de se consacrer entièrement au développement de leur recherche en bénéficiant d’un environnement scientifique de premier plan, et en établissant des réseaux durables avec les institutions universitaires et de recherche à Paris et dans la Région Île-de-France.

ETHICOMP 2014 (june 25 to 27) will be held in Paris at « Les Cordeliers ». The ETHICOMP conference series was initiated in 1995 by Professors Simon Rogerson and Terry Bynum. The purpose of this series is to provide an inclusive forum for discussing the ethical and social issues associated with the development and application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Held every 18 months, the previous conferences have featured over 600 papers from delegates and speakers from all continents. ETHICOMP 2014 will be the first conference held jointly with the CEPE (Computer Ethics: Philosophical Enquiries) conference (sponsored by INSEIT - the International Society for Ethics and Information Technology). La transnationalisation du religieux par la musique

La transnationalisation du religieux se traduit par une délocalisation et une relocalisation des croyances, rituels et pratiques religieuses qui se réalise au-delà du cadre national étatique, dans des espaces réels ou symboliques, et le plus souvent au moyen de nouveaux imaginaires et récits identitaires. Si l’analyse de cette transnationalisation religieuse a permis de mettre en lumière divers processus par lesquels le religieux transcende les frontières, il est frappant de constater que la musique est rarement appréhendée pour le rôle qu’elle y joue. Or, ce dernier est essentiel dans la transnationalisation des religions à vocation universelle comme l’islam ou le christianisme. La musique contribue aussi activement à la migration des religions de terroir, des mouvements néo-traditionalistes et des cultes associés à une localité d’origine, tels que le vodou haïtien, la santeria cubaine ou le candomble brésilien. Ces phénomènes musicaux, loin d’être nouveaux, ont d’abord donné le jour à des proto-mondialisations religieuses.
