Crossroads of Critique: Axel Honneth and the Frankfurt School Project

Sciences Po 7th Graduate Conference in Political Theory

We are happy to announce that the seventh annual Graduate Conference in Political Theory is going to be held in Paris on June 6-8, 2019, entitled Crossroads of Critique: Axel Honneth and the Frankfurt School Project. We welcome contributions from graduate students of political theory across the board and intend to accommodate various approaches (analytical, historical, normative, and critical) as well as contributions from related disciplines (philosophy, social theory, etc.). We also aim at geographic diversity, in that we shall try to foster a substantial academic dialogue between young political theorists from Europe and their peers across the world. Over recent years, the Sciences Po Graduate Conference has established itself as one of Europe’s foremost venues for an international exchange of ideas among graduate students in political theory.

Making Sense of Latin Classics in the Middle Ages

12th Celtic Conference in Classics (panel 11)

The aim of this panel is to explore how medieval authors have dealt with the Classical heritage within their own cultural context. This enquiry could illustrate different degrees of exploitation of classical texts: from systematic excerption to scattered quotations naturalized in different frameworks, from the reshaping of biographies, political and philosophical treatises to the reuse of poetical patterns in order to convey new values. Making sense always implies a multiple perspective. The goal of this panel is to encourage the interaction between different points of view – historical, philological, literary, philosophical, scientific – in order to get a better understanding of the cultural background through which the Classics had to pass before reaching us.

Schalten und walten. Towards Operative Ontologies

    IKKM Biennial Conference 2019

The conference will conclude the IKKM six-year research program on ‘Operative Ontologies’. A term seeming contradictory at first, it assumes that everything that exists is not simply present or given but has been called into being through media and their operations in the most general sense: The ruling (das Walten) of nature as well as the ruling of the social reside under the command of technology, which as increasingly digitized technology is based on switching operations (das Schalten) — e.g. the achievements of bioengineering or the computational models of planet Earth. When embodied operations establish ontological orders and the difference between the ontic and the ontological thus re-enters the ontic, this demands a radical remodeling of ontology. The IKKM Biennial Conference 2019 therefore investigates the given with regard to the procedures through which it has been made possible, produced, set up, brought into the world and called into being — “switched on” — in the first place.

Mind and Body Across Time and Discipline

The two central ways of conceptualizing psyche–soma relations in the western tradition were, and still are, the Platonic and the Aristotelian paradigms. According to Plato, a human being is a combination of two distinct substances, a mortal body and an immortal soul. According to Aristotle, a human being is a unified substance: the soul (psuche) is the form of the body, and to describe the soul is to describe the characteristic powers of human beings, just as describing the soul of a pine tree is to describe the characteristic powers of pine trees. Human beings are seen on a continuous scale with all other beings, and to say they have a rational soul roughly means that they have a linguistic capacity that other beings lack.

    Theologies of revolution

    Medieval to Modern Europe

Modern researchers still struggle to balance emic and etic explanations of revolutionary action, yet at least since the XIVth century, movements and thinkers began to arise which clearly defined their violent, revolutionary action in theological terms, or terms in which the “religious” and “political” are not clearly separate spheres of existence. Such movements built and innovated upon existing understandings of matters like the human condition and history, the perfectability of the world, and the human relationship with God, to not merely legitimize violent action (post facto), but to motivate, guide, and inform it along the way. Our workshop aims to discuss and elaborate upon these and other themes related to revolution from the medieval to the modern periods in Europe, west and east. We hope to address the implications of re-opening historical debate on revolutions which take seriously the input of political-religion.

The technologization of cultural techniques. What happens when practices become algorithmic technologies?

Princeton-Weimar Summer School for Media Studies 2019

The 2019 session of the Princeton-Weimar Summer School for Media Studies will be devoted to the question what happens to concepts derived from cultural techniques – like writing, erasure, image, number, not to mention the concept of culture itself – when implemented by algorithmic routines that run on computers or mobile media and thus effectively become digitized cultural technologies. The 2019 Princeton-Weimar Summer School for Media Studies will attempt to map out approaches to media as networks of cultural technologies. We invite applications from outstanding doctoral students throughout the world in media studies and related fields such as film studies, literary studies, philosophy, art history, architecture, sociology, politics, the history of science and visual culture.

    Merleau-Ponty, literature, and literary language

Chiasmi International. Trilingual Studies Concerning the Thought of Merleau-Ponty – 21st issue

In the thought of Merleau-Ponty, the relation between philosophy and literature is more original, as well as more radical, than referring to literary works as philosophical illustrations or objects of study, and offers an implicit conception of literature that makes the literary writer a partner of the phenomenologist. Merleau-Ponty deepens the dimensions of this partnership along many lines: in an empathetic reading of certain writers; in a conception of language searching for a delicate articulation of relationships and reality; and also by strategies of original expression that endeavor to respond to the requirements posed by the concepts of the flesh, being, and of philosophy itself. To mention only the most prominent examples, in relation to Proust, the philosopher developed his conception of “sensible ideas;” in relation to Claudel, his conjoining of birth and knowledge as “co-naissance;” from Valéry came “chiasm” and the “chiasma of two destinies;” from Claude Simon came “the flesh of the world.” Chiasmi Volume 21 invites submissions written in French, English or Italian on any of these themes, figures, the overall stamp of literature and literary language on the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty, as well as correlations and crossings between Merleau-Ponty and the literary theories of other prominent contemporaries such as Nancy and Blanchot.

    Anti-Lumières, révolution et dissentiments

Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence / PJCV

Reason and rational modes of thought are often seen as the bastion against the acceleration of conflict into violence and the goal of the Enlightenment tradition was, in a large part, to liberate individuals from those irrational superstitions and beliefs which were at the base of these conflicts. However, many critiques of the Enlightenment project, both historical and more contemporary, see the imposition of universal reason as itself a form violence, ignoring claims of comprehensive traditions, identity and history on the individual. The aim of this special edition of the Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence is to examine possible counter-enlightenment approaches to violence, conflict and conflict resolution.

    Exploring ‘francophone’ environmental justice approaches

Anglo-american and francophone environmental justice approaches have largely evolved in parallel, both conceptually and politically. While anglophone EJ scholars have recently called for enlarging the conceptual underpinnings of environmental justice studies, ‘francophone’ influences have largely remained a blind spot in the literature. This panel focusses on the distinctiveness (or lack thereof) of French/francophone approaches to environmental justice. We hope to move this conversation forward by establishing cross-Channel connections between academic environmental justice networks in the UK and in France.

    Visibility/Invisibility

Adventures of Identity: From the Double to the Avatar

Recent developments in image-making techniques have resulted in a blurring of the threshold between the image world and the real world. Immersive and interactive virtual environments elicit in the perceiver a strong feeling of being incorporated into an autonomous world. Such incorporation can be conveyed by the “avatar”, a digital proxy through which the subject interacts with synthetic objects or other avatars. By convening scholars from different disciplines, the colloquium aims to critically address these multifarious issues, discussing the problematic and controversial status of the avatar, which is in urgent need of definition.

    Thresholds III – “Avatar”

    Seminar of philosophy of image

Recent evolutions in the contemporary iconoscape have enabled the production of pictures that elicit in the perceiver a strong feeling of “being there”, namely of being incorporated into new and autonomous environments. Subjects relating to such environments are no longer visual observers in front of images isolated from the real world by a framing device; they are experiencers living in quasi-worlds that offer multisensory stimuli and allow interactive sensorimotor affordances. In relation to such quasi-worlds, a key role is played by the avatar, a digital proxy through which subjects interact with synthetic objects or other avatars. The notion and the uses of the avatar are becoming crucial in a variety of disciplines, ranging from philosophy to visual culture studies, anthropology, sociology, cognitive psychology, and neurosciences. Also, they are raising relevant issues in the fields of ethics and politics.

    Cultural literacy and cosmopolitan conviviality

Cultural literacy in Europe: 3rd biennial conference

This conference will address modes of conviviality that cultures may have resisted, promoted or facilitated down the ages and especially in the present. It will reflect upon the role and effects of cultural literacy in different media, in the shaping of today’s politics and global economy. As a potent tool for spreading ideas and ideologies, cultural literacy helps shape world-views and social attitudes in indelible ways that need further investigation.

    Global Ethics of Compromise

What are the normative assumptions and solutions proposed to develop morally right or wrong compromise typologies? Can we develop a universal ethics of compromise or does compromise vary depending on the socio-cultural history of a country? To what extent is culture relevant in shaping types and norms of compromise? The conference aims, firstly, to understand how to distinguish a compromise from a compromise of principles; what constitutes an ethical or fair compromise? Second, it will analyze if practices of compromise vary from one country to another. To do so, different types of compromise will be explored through geopolitical, philosophical, historical approaches, with a particular focus on Japan and Taiwan. This symposium will examine theoretical issues and practices associated with compromise, by adopting a global perspective. It will bring together contributions from European, American and Asian researchers.
