    Inhabiting Collectivity

Guest editors Nele Aernouts (VUB), Emmanuelle Lenel (USL-B) and Christine Schaut (ULB) invite contributions for the themed issue of Clara 10 “Inhabiting Collectivity”. This issue of Clara pursues a twofold objective. At a larger scale, it aims at shedding light on the context within which collective housing is produced, on their underpinning architectural and spatial models, and on the interplay among the involved actors. At a smaller scale, it questions the intentions underlying this production by investigating its architectural and social mechanisms, and how these can foster or instead hinder certain uses and forms of sociability.

Public History in European Historical Perspectives

According to international literature, public history emerged as a subfield of history in the United States in the 1970s. University programs, conferences, journals, grants, and networks of public history indeed flourished in North America in the last 50 years. However, some public historical practices have existed in Europe - without bearing the name of public history - long before the institutionalization of the field in the 1970s. It is this long history of public historical practices in Europe that this international conference aims to uncover. Proposals covering a wide range of public historical practices from different time periods (including Antiquity, Middle-Ages, and pre-Modern times) are welcome.

    Amazigh Orality in Contemporary Production

Orality, that is, the culture of the spoken word, is a central feature of Amazigh everyday life, history, and linguistics, and communal knowledge. Indeed, although Imazighen have one of the oldest writing systems in North Africa, known as Tifinagh, the latter is not associated with a body of written literature, an Amazigh literary canon. On the other hand, the Amazigh peoples have an extensive and rich oral literature that includes poetry, myths, fables, songs, proverbs, sacred rituals, and tales, which are excluded from a simple textualist notion of culture and communal identity.

    Aids before Aids

This issue of Quaderni storici aims to focus on the transitional phase, so to speak, the one in which contagion emerges, manifests itself, and acts, causing sickness and death, but without yet being understood, nor known in its pathological characters, etiologies, and therapies. What are the social practices - including institutional practices in their contextual genesis - acting at this historical juncture in which the concrete experience of illness collides with the absence of terms and interpretations to counter it? What cultural and social processes are activated to deal with something that is both concretely active and culturally incomprehensible? How do these processes involve sexuality and the history of the way in which it has been thought of, signified, and governed?

Women’s narratives and European integration history

The history of European integration and Europeanisation has developed into a varied field that has moved on from an initial focus on the vision and achievements of the founding fathers. However, even though women played a vital part in the European project launched after the Second World War, their role has yet to be fully explored. Women tended to remain in the background until they began to be more readily accepted as political leaders, particularly following the first European elections by direct universal suffrage in 1979 and the appointment of the first female European Commissioner in 1989. Against this backdrop, “adding a gender perspective to European memory” and history seems essential.

    Mediaeval Latin Mathematics

Methodos issue 25/2025, “Mediaeval Latin Mathematics”, welcomes studies and editions of mathematical texts from the Latin Middle Ages, a field which has received comparatively less scholarly attention than its Arabic counterpart or, for that matter, other disciplines within the Latin traditions (such as logic and dialectic, for instance). Insofar as Mediaeval mathematics encompassed not only arithmetics and geometry but also astronomy, music, optics and mechanics, the call for papers is open to studies which concern themselves with all mediaeval texts which, while they belong to other disciplines as well (natural and moral philosophy, theology, logic, etc.), rely heavily on mathematical lore and practice.

Transversal Skills for Work and Life: Strengthening Guidance and Validation

    Transval-EU Research Conference

Both in work settings and in daily life, there is a growing need for individuals to develop high-level competences to address complex challenges. Transversal competences set the foundation for personal development, resilience, the ability to communicate and work constructively with others, problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage one’s learning and career. Yet transversal competences are. not always valued or made visible in guidance and validation processes for adult learners. TRANSVAL-EU, one of the largest policy experimentations in Europe, has aimed to bridge this gap in guidance and assessment in the area of validation of non-formal and informal learning (VNFIL).

Ecotourism and Ecotravel in the Anthropocene

Green Marble 2023. International Meeting on Anthropocene Studies and Ecocriticism

Green Marble 2023 is an international scientific meeting focused on the theme “Ecotourism and Ecotravel in the Anthropocene”. We specifically seek to address and discuss how ecotourism, understood as a form of tourism that involves responsible travel (using sustainable transport) to natural areas, conserving the environment and improving the well-being of the local population, can contribute to a good Anthropocene, the one where we become able to use the unprecedented collective power to act in/on the planet we acquire in a balanced and fair way.

Cooperation and Controversy. The 14th Annual International Conference on Baltic and Nordic Studies

The purpose of the conference is to shed light on cooperation and controversy aspects in Scandinavia, the Baltic Sea Region, and beyond. It examines the two topics through the lens of cultural and literary studies (including arts such as drama, theater, cinema, etc.), history, economic and trade analysis, political science, military analysis, and international relations, among other multidisciplinary angles. We thus invite researchers from all of these fields to submit proposals for panels and individual papers, thereby facilitating inter-disciplinary dialogues at the conference.

Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Climate and Biodiversity Crises

Historical evolutions, current realities, and future pathways for socio-ecological transformation

Over the past centuries, the industrialisation of Western societies gradually impacted nature, and environmental problems increased with globalisation during the last decades. As a consequence, we are now experiencing major crises which are linked with each other: biodiversity is disappearing faster and faster, and global warming is escalating, not only causing unprecedented damage to the Earth, but also unequally and unfairly affecting different parts of the world. In this context, our summer school proposes to bring together an interdisciplinary range of researchers interested in the various implications and interconnections of the climate crisis and the biodiversity crisis.
