Brazil Meeting of the Global Bergsonism Research Project

Based on the pioneering work of Bento Prado Júnior and Franklin Leopoldo e Silva, Bergsonian studies have developed significantly in Brazil over the last twenty years. This includes a thematic diversity that allows a rich dialogue with other scholars around the world. This Webseminar will be an occasion to discuss the potentialities of Bergon’s work, explored in an original way through the diversity of schools and academic backgrounds of all continents. We hope to encourage and foster discussions in a concrete practice of “ouverture” – mental, cultural and social – renewing questions and problematizations around three themes: spirit and life, Bergson and the history of philosophy, Bergson and contemporary philosophy.

“Reinvent yourself!”

Alignment and Resistance in the Arts and Culture amidst Societal Claims for Change

In the covid-19 pandemic, many transformations affected various societal areas. Becoming a “total social fact” (Marcel Mauss), the virus acted as a revealer of society’s (dys)functioning. The arts and culture were often in the forefront of the pandemic and of its disruptions. Implicitly and sometimes explicitly, artists and cultural actors were then urged to “reinvent” themselves. State authorities, the media, and the public pushed them for “new ways” of doing, consuming, evaluating, or managing culture and the arts. What different claims for “reinvention” are addressed to the worlds of arts and culture, and how do they react to these demands? This two-day international conference aims to better understand the capacity and will of alignment or resistance to the various demands for transformation that the worlds of art and culture face from time to time.

The zero degree of architectural writing – Theorizing, drawing and debating the ‘third term’ is a two-day symposium to be held on 2 and 3 November 2022 at the Faculty of Architecture La Cambre Horta of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. It aims to explore the history of the idea of ‘zero degree’ of architectural writing borrowed from Roland Barthes’ Writing Degree Zero (1953), and its resonance in the present.

“Phusis kai phuta”. Nature and plants in Ancient Greece

Phusis kai phuta is a research network that aims to gather and share ongoing research on nature (phusis) and plants (phuta) in ancient Greece. We are currently running our fourth online seminar series. We are particularly interested in three sets of interrelated topics. (1) Vegetal poetics: when and to which ends were plants mentionend in Greek poetical, philosophical and medical texts? (2) Botanical analogies: what models did plants offer to ancient Greek authors for speculating about cosmogony and cosmology, politics and society, psychology and ethics, the body and kinship? (3) The history of phusis: what concepts did this term cover exactly and how are we to grasp them without ironing out their differences from our concept(s) of nature?

Eliot scholars, and specialists of Modernism more generally, to share and discuss their (re)assessment of the reception of T. S. Eliot’s works and ideas in the various languages of Europe. The George and Irina Schaeffer Center for the Study of Genocide, Human Rights, and Conflict Prevention, and the American University of Paris hope to provide a virtual forum on May 9-10, 2022, for scholars from multiple disciplines and humanitarian activists to process the causes and consequences of the war in the Ukraine. Because of the urgency and ongoing nature of the conflict, we are not expecting polished academic presentations but short (10-15 minutes) thought pieces that help to elucidate various aspects and interpretations of the war. The Stuff of Tradition: Materiality and Media in Folklore Studies

In the forthcoming 11^th international conference of Young folklorists, we seek to examine the complex relationship of folklore studies with materiality by juxtaposing it with recent re-orientations to media and (re)mediation. The conference aims to explore various materialities inherent to our data and methodology – whether obvious or ambiguous – and rethink their position in our field. We invite scholars to discuss both academic and vernacular notions on the transmission of tradition and its social and material embeddedness. We also encourage methodological discussion on how folklore scholars are themselves bound by various (new) media and technologies of documentation, archiving, and presentation.

The United National estimates that by 2050, two out of every three people will be living in cities. This will have a transformative impact on urban areas in ways that may be positive, negative, or neutral: rapid urban sprawl, the rise of megacities, cultural revival through the introduction of difference, increasing inequality, growth in the arts, a more conducive environment for innovation, increased corruption, crime and human exploitation, etc. This issue will highlight new architectural and landscape/urban planning responses on migration, including strategies for reinforcing social inclusion and urban diversity.

"Eracle. Journal of Sport and Social Sciences" Vol. 5 (2022)

The Coronavirus emergency, the regime of social distancing have revitalised the bicycle as a means of transport in urban and suburban areas. The post-pandemic scenario also makes it possible to conceive of the bicycle as a vector of transformation and social innovation, with wider effects on cycling tourism and sport. The new post-Covid19 mobility needs are linked to the green transition framework, reflecting the emerging Zeitgest towards sustainable mobility modes. With the aim of contributing to this field of study, and notably to understand the conditions for the spread of cycling as practice, this call for papers invites articles focusing on the increasing mediatization and platformization of the experience of cycling.

The next special issue of the journal ARTisON, to be released at the end of 2022, has Heritage safeguarding in colonial times as its theme. This special issue is the result of collaboration between the ARTIS - Institute of Art History of the University of Lisbon and the ICOMOS ISCSBH - International Scientific Committee on Shared Built Heritage. The intention of this ARTisON issue is to reflect on the processes, ideologies, persons and institutions related to heritage safeguarding in colonial territories during the colonial period.
