Transfers of precious metals and their consequences (17th-20th centuries)

After the first Round Table, in Paris at the École normale supérieure in January 2012, "Moneys and Economies during 19^th Century, from Europe to Asia", a second Round Table will be organized in the framework of the program DAMIN, in cooperation with the Casa de Velázquez and the LabEx TransferS (École normale supérieure, Paris). Precious metals were often transferred from a region, or a country, to another: looting of conquered regions (such as Roman Spain, Gaul or Egypt), invasions (Vandals, Huns invading the Roman Empire, Crusaders arriving at Constantinople), and, of course arrival of gold and silver from Americas after 1492. Each time, the new metal disturbed the monetary systems, sometimes improving, sometimes troubling the currencies and economies. The period considered is focused on the 19^th century, the question of the depreciation of silver and the transfers of metals from America or Europe to Asia, India, China, etc.

Le phénomène des « communautés fermées », « ensembles résidentiels sécurisés », « quartiers fermés » ou encore « enclaves fortifiées » suscite depuis quelques années un vif intérêt de la part de la communauté scientifique. Différentes perspectives théoriques et conceptuelles ont été mobilisées au sein de différentes disciplines pour analyser ce phénomène complexe et multidimensionnel. La 25ème conférence du réseau ENHR - European Network for Housing Research invite à s'interroger sur les modalités d'intégration de ces ensembles résidentiels fermés dans l'environnement urbain.

From Carpentry to Joinery

Floors and ceilings, shutters and frames, doors and panelling in Medieval and Modern Architecture

This study day, organised by the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (IRPA-KIK), the University of Namur, the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and the Royal Museums for Art and History (MRAH-KMKG), is part of the series of scientific meetings started by the research group AcanthuM (University of Namur) on the theme of construction finishings and fittings. The present meeting will focus on joinery elements in architecture from the Middle Ages and modern period that contribute to the organization of the interior workings of a building and division of space through the layout of doorways and window openings, as well as playing a part in the interior decoration.

7th International PhD Seminar Urbanism and Urbanization

Cette septième édition des U&U International PhD séminaires aura lieu à l'ENSA Paris-Malaquais, sous la direction scientifique du laboratoire de planification de l'infrastructure, de l'architecture et du territoire (LIAT). Le séminaire s'adresse aux doctorants qui souhaitent présenter leurs recherches en cours questionnant les aspects du domaine de la planification urbaine d'un point de vue théorique ou avec un potentiel de mise en œuvre pratique. Le U&U séminaire se déroule exclusivement en anglais et vise à promouvoir l'échange d'idées, à susciter un débat parmi les chercheurs, à inviter des comparaisons et à mettre en évidence les dernières recherches en cours. Il s'agit d'une rare occasion offerte aux jeunes chercheurs de rencontrer des scientifiques de premier plan et de construire un argument critique.

Women in Educated Elites of Pre-Socialist and Early Socialist East Central European Societies

The opening up to modernity of East Central Europe since the late 19th century was marked – among other things – by a triple process generating structural transformations of established post-feudal societies and affecting often radically the status of women. Due to post-feudal conditions of competition for social standing, positions of influence and prestige, hitherto unknown forms of inequalities appeared in the very process of accumulation of political, economic, professional, cultural an educational assets henceforth necessary for the access to the elites. Female professionals, though they could rarely achieve advanced careers in the ruling elites in the old regime, so much so that they often encountered even various forms of public rejection and discrimination on intellectual markets, significantly participated in the framing of the way of life of the new middle class. This workshop will adopt a gender-focused perspective cocentrating on the place of women (training, education, professions) and bringing to light the differences and inequalities existing between male and female members of educated elites.

International Social Science Summer School in Ukraine - Mykolaiv (Ukraine)

The 5th Annual International Social Science School, to be held in Mykolaiv, Southern Ukraine, on 2-9 July 2013, will have the theme of “Challenging the Social Order: Revolution, Reform and Transformation Under and After Socialism.” For an intensive week in early July, an international group of twenty doctoral students and up to a dozen faculties are converging to a different town in Ukraine to hear and discuss presentations on ongoing research on a critical theme. The Summer School is designed to be interdisciplinary and international and follows the format of a Workshop. The program also includes lectures and field trips, of historical and contemporary significance, within the region.

Not All Quiet on the Ottoman Fronts

Neglected Perspectives on a Global War, 1914-18

As World War I was the central founding experience of the twentieth century and thus needs to be discussed in relation to various segments of society and on several levels, we believe that its 100th anniversary is the appropriate moment to bring together recent research on the Ottoman theater of the war based on the various traditions of this new military history established in the last 30 years and assess where we stand today in our knowledge of the World War and where we are headed. We therefore invite papers that develop existing approaches and questions to a further level. On this basis these papers will aid us in entering into a comparative, and where possible transnational, perspective of the war.

The Mosaic of Urban Identities

For the conference "Cultural Encounters. The Mosaic of Urban Identities" we want to invite papers from scholars in any field of research who want to share their disciplinary insights in the matter with colleagues from other disciplines. How is multiculturalism in urban settings treated in their disciplines, what challenges and opportunities do they see? And how do they differ from or enhance the views we encounter in the media or in political or ideological debates? Commemoration, Re-enactment, Writings of War in the English-speaking World (18th-21st centuries)

The wars of the past have not left the same imprint on collective memory. Wars of conquest or liberation have marked the history of the British Empire and its colonies in different ways. American foreign policy seems to be motivated by what is sometimes viewed as an imperialist vision which led the army into the quagmire of Vietnam and more recently into controversial involvement in the Gulf. Whether they end in victory or defeat, or are a source of patriotic pride or collective shame, wars are commemorated in museum exhibitions or through literature and the cinema in which the threads of ideological discourse and the expression of subjective experience are intertwined. From the upheavals of the Napoleonic Wars and the American Civil War to the Boer Wars in South Africa, from the “Troubles” in Northern Ireland to the carnage and devastation of the two World Wars, some conflicts seem to attract “duties of memory” while others are simply forgotten.

Deuxième école d'été d'histoire rurale de Flaran

« Archéologie des campagnes et histoire rurale – Moyen Age et époque moderne » : le thème choisi pour cette édition 2013 de l’école d’été d’histoire rurale permettra de s’interroger sur les relations entre l’histoire et l’archéologie rurale. Plus que les oppositions, ce sont d’abord les relations, les combinaisons et les interrelations disciplinaires qui nous semblent devoir être questionnées à travers les différentes traditions scientifiques européennes (Angleterre, Allemagne, Belgique, Espagne, France, Italie). Ce tour d’horizon européen constituera l’intérêt majeur de l’école d’été 2013. La réflexion mettra également l’accent sur le développement récent de l’archéologie moderne, ou post-médiévale, pratiquée en Angleterre et en Italie, par exemple, mais qui reste encore embryonnaire dans plusieurs pays européens et sur l’apport et les modalités de recherche de l’archéologie préventive.

1813-2013: Two centuries of reading Friedrich Schleiermacher’s seminal text “On the different methods of translating”

7th Colloquium on Translation Studies

Two hundred years after his famous lecture at the Royal Academy of Science in Berlin, during the Napoleonic era, Friedrich Schleiermacher still remains an assiduous presence in Translation Studies bibliography all over the world. His definition of two (and only two) methods of translating has become indispensable to the common core vocabulary of both translators and researchers of translation alike. This binary opposition dates back to Saint Jerome, or even Cicero (De Oratore) and still retains all of its attractiveness, being referred to by different designations such as translation methods, strategies, procedures or norms.
